HEALTHY HINTS
Storage Tips for Preserving Flavor• Vegetables that originate in warm climates, like beans, peppers, okra and summer squash, keep best at a temperature around 50°F.
• Tomatoes should be stored on the kitchen counter and used within a few days. The cold temperatures of refrigeration ruin the fl avors.
• Winter squash are best stored in a cool, dark place away from heat.
• Most other vegetables keep best at a temperature around 32-35°F.
• Leafy greens should be washed, drained, wrapped loosely in paper or cloth towels and refrigerated in a tightly sealed container.

The extremely large, thick embedded handle is in proper scale to the large fruit size. The vigorous plant can support several fruits without diminishing the larger size of the fully mature fruit.
ROCKAFELLOW
This small pie pumpkin weighs in at only 2 to 3 pounds and has a unique rounded-oval shape. The handles are dark green and well-attached, easy for small hands to pick up and carry. HEALTHY HINTS
Bake, Roast or SteamWinter squash is more nutrient dense than summer squash. The deeper the fl esh color, the higher the amount of beta carotene. It also provides more soluble fi ber, which can help lower cholesterol. A typical ½ cup serving also provides good amounts of Vitamin C and potassium and few calories. Bake, roast or steam your winter squash to retain the most nutrients.
Try this! Don’t let fear of correctly preparing spaghetti squash deter you from trying it. This is our favorite method: Preheat oven to 375° degrees. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and strings in the center cavity. Place in a baking dish and rub the surface of each half with olive oil and 3-4 cloves of minced garlic, then season each with salt and pepper. Bake for 50-55 minutes; remove from oven and place in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. Then hold each halved piece over a large bowl and, using a fork, scrape the surface of the squash until it “strings” and pulls away from the shell. Prepare as you would any pasta dish.

HEALTHY HINTS
Tasty, Nutritious and Low Cal!Watermelon has more of the cancer-fi ghting antioxidant lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable – even the tomato. Watermelon consumption has also been shown to increase the body’s free arginine, which helps maintain cardiovascular function. Add to that its high levels of Vitamins A, B6 and C per serving, and its low calories, means adding watermelon to your diet may be one of the tastiest ways to eat healthier.

This very productive, fl at-leaf type parsley boasts a distinctive fl avor and rich, dark green leaves. Slightly later in maturity (77-80 days), its winter hardiness makes it ideal for overwintering into the spring in both the home garden and for fresh market production.
PARSLEY DARK GREEN ITALIAN Our selection of this heirloom fl at-leaf parsley offers a broader leaf with more fl avor than other varieties. The glossy, dark green, moderately cut leaves mature in 65-70 days and are well suited for both home garden and fresh market use. Organic and non-organic seeds available.

DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE REACTIONS
TO PATHOGENS, PESTS AND STRESSES
The terms used in this catalog to describe the reactions of varieties to various diseases, pests, or stresses are consistent with those developed and used in the sciences of plant pathology and plant breeding.
IMMUNITY: Not subject to attack or infection by a
specifi ed pest or pathogen.
RESISTANCE: Resistance is the ability of a plant variety
to restrict the growth and development
of a specifi ed pest or pathogen and/or
the damage they cause when compared
to susceptible plant varieties under
similar environmental conditions and pest
or pathogen pressure. Resistant varieties
may exhibit some disease symptoms or
damage under heavy pest or pathogen
pressure.
TWO LEVELS OF RESISTANCE
ARE DEFINED:
Standard resistance (R):
Plant varieties that highly restrict the growth
and development of the specifi ed pest or
pathogen under normal pest or pathogen
pressure when compared to susceptible
varieties. These plant varieties may, however,
exhibit some symptoms or damage under
heavy pest or pathogen pressure.
Intermediate or moderate resistance (IR):
Plant varieties that restrict the growth and
development of the specified pest or
pathogen, but may exhibit a greater range
of symptoms or damage compared to
“standard resistant” varieties. Moderately/
intermediately resistant plant varieties will
still show less severe symptoms or damage
than susceptible plant varieties when grown
under similar environmental conditions and/
or pest or pathogen pressure.
TOLERANCE (T): The ability of a plant variety to
endure abiotic stress without serious
consequences for growth, appearance
and yield.
SUSCEPTIBILITY: The inability of a plant variety to restrict the
growth and development of a specifi ed pest
or pathogen.
Statements on the reaction of varieties
to a specifi c pathogen, pest or stress are
based on evaluations made under defi ned
conditions and are believed to be reliable.
However, it is important to understand that
these reactions can be affected in nature by
environmental, biological (e.g. new pathogen
races or pest biotypes which overcome
resistance), or other uncontrollable factors
that may alter expected performance.
NOTE: Maturity date unless specifi ed for a particu-
lar location provides a range of earliness.
These maturity dates may be different
under your specifi c climate and/or growing
conditions.
DISCLAIMER: Claims and other disclosed information
are based on our observations and/or
information from other sources. Crop
performance depends on the interaction
between the genetic potential of the
seed, its physiological characteristics, the
environment, including management, and
other uncontrollable factors that may alter
expected performance. Statements on the
reaction of varieties to a specifi c pathogen,
pest or stress are based on evaluation under
defi ned conditions. These reactions can be
affected by changes in environmental and
biological factors, especially new pathogen
races, pest biotypes or vectors of disease
agents. Therefore, we give no warranty,
express or implied, for crop performance
relative to the information given; nor do
we accept any liability for any loss, direct
or consequential, that may arise from
any cause. Read all seed package labeling
carefully as it contains terms and conditions
of sale.
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY AND REMEDY:
Sakata Seed America, Inc. (“Company”)
warrants that the seeds and/or plants in the
container are as described on the container,
subject to tolerances established by law.
THE FOREGOING EXPRESS WARRANTY
EXCLUDES ALL OTHER WARRANTIES,
EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING THE
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, AND
WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR
PURPOSE. THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES
WHICH EXTEND BEYOND THE DESCRIPTION
HEREON. Company does not warrant that
the conventional seed and/or plants
produced by the company are completely
free of genetically modifi ed organisms
(“GMO”). Due to events outside the
reasonable control of the company,
including (but not limited to) adventitious
pollen contamination due to pollen drift
caused by wind and/or insects, Company
specifi cally disclaims any warranty as
to complete freedom from GMO. By
acceptance, and/or use of the seed and/
or plants, buyer agrees that the Company’s
liability and the buyer’s exclusive remedy for
breach of any warranty shall be limited, in all
events, to a return of the purchase price of
the seed and/or plants, and in no event shall
the Company be liable for any incidental
or consequential damages. All claims must
be presented within a reasonable time after
discovery and in no event more than thirty
(30) days after the defect in the seed and/
or plants becomes apparent. Crop yields
and quality are due to so many causes and
conditions beyond the Company’s control
that neither the Company nor dealer can
warrant yield or quality. Unless accepted on
the foregoing terms, buyer shall return the
seed and/or plants in the original unopened
container within 15 days of purchase for a
refund of the purchase price.
