SAINTS ALIVE November–December 2019

Vol. #15 No. #6

(cont. next page —>)

The holiday season is upon us and many of us are feeling overwhelmed with the busyness that lies ahead. There are so many things that need our time and attention as we move towards Thanksgiving and Christmas. For the Martha’s among us, we find ourselves “anxious and troubled about many things” (Lk 10:41).

So in writing to you about this, please know that I am speaking to myself first and foremost – let’s all just slow down! Take a moment each day (several times a day, if you can manage it) to just stop and breathe and remember who we are and whose we are. Let’s try and let each of the seasons and holidays that we are celebrating speak into our lives so that we don’t miss the message or the meaning.

For Thanksgiving this year, may I suggest that you begin a list of things that you are thankful for. Write something down each day between now and November 28, and encourage your family to join you in this task. Then, when you sit down at table together to celebrate, each of you can take turns sharing some of the things that you are most thankful for. The Lord has blessed each one of us in so many ways and it is no small thing to show our gratitude to Him.

Another way you can connect with this special holiday is by joining us in providing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner to a group of Chinese international students from Florida State University. On Monday, November 25 at 4:30 pm, we will host a meal in cooperation with InterVarsity ministry. Sarah Ma-Taylor, who preached at All Saints at the end of last month, will be bringing some of her students to All

Saints again and we will not only share a meal but spend time around the table getting to know one another and learning about our cultures. The evening will end with a simple service of thanksgiving in the Church. In addition to food, we need people to come and help us welcome these students – some for whom Church is a new thing. Please come and participate.

The Season of Advent begins on Sunday, December 1. It is the four weeks before Christmas when the Church focuses more on the second coming of Christ than on his initial coming in Bethlehem. May I suggest that you spend Advent this year growing in your love and knowledge of Jesus by taking on a discipline of daily Bible reading? The Gospel of Luke has twenty-four chapters. Read one chapter each day of the month leading up to December 24. It will be a wonderful way to remember the One whose birth we celebrate at our Christmas Eve Service.

There will also be an Advent Quiet Day at St. Peter’s Cathedral held on Saturday, December 7th. I have been asked to lead this time and will be presenting a series of meditations on the three Advents of Christ: His first coming, His second coming, and His coming to each one of us individually.

More information about this will be posted at the church very soon.

So while we hustle and bustle preparing our homes and our families for Thanksgiving and Christmas, let’s take time to prepare our hearts as well. These are wonderful and rich seasons that bring not only joy but meaning to

our lives each year. Let’s not miss it.

In Christ’s Love and with mine,

Loneliness Is Longing for Relationship with God

By Rick Warren —— Oct. 29, 2019

“It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18

NIV).

What you often call loneliness is really homesickness for God. You’ve just never recognized it.

You were made to have a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, a relationship that God is dying to have with you. In fact, his Son did die so you could have it. Nothing is ever going to compensate for that—no person, no experience, no drug, no success, no thing, no possession. Nothing is going to fill that aching hole in your heart that God created for himself. He wants you to know him.

How do you get to know God?

1. Open your life to Jesus Christ. Say, “Jesus Christ, I want to get to know you. I want to learn to love you the way you loved me, even before I knew it. I want to have a relationship with you.” You were made for a relationship with God—not a religion of fear, rules, regulations, and rituals, but a relationship where you talk to God all the time and he works in and through you. That is the antidote to your deepest loneliness.

2. Join a church family. We weren’t meant to be Lone Ranger Christians. Find a spot where you can get involved. Join a small group where other people get to know you and where you find the support network you need when you’re going through those tough times. Take a chance. Take a risk. Join a small group.

The real reason so many Christians are lonely is because they’re sitting when they should be serving. All around us is a world full of people who are lonely and waiting to be cared for. That elderly person who hasn’t had a visit in two years. That teenager who is all messed up and wonders, “What am I going to do with my life?” That single adult who goes home every night to a lonely apartment. That widow who has just buried her husband. That employee who heads for the bar every night after work because there’s nothing else to do.

The world is full of people waiting to be loved. Stop saying, “I don’t have any friends!” and start saying, “God, who can you use me to minister to? What person can I show your love to?” If all you do is commit yourself to being a friend to lonely people, you’ll live a significant life. That would be a valid, worthy life goal. Get involved in ministry.

You will go through lonely times in your life, but you’ll never go through it alone if you have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ.

the things Satan is doing, but also about the ways God keeps stepping in. Saving. Redeeming. Surprising and healing. Just as He always does. Even when we can’t see it, even when it’s hardest to believe.

However, when I shared with Sasha the picture I posted to my Facebook wall yesterday, together we

cried. It reads “where God calls you, He goes too.” And then she looked me in the eyes and sighed and said “some days I just get so angry. You know why I get angry? Because I think people—Christians—have stopped praying.” Sasha knows God is with her; her fear is we are not.

And so, on Sasha’s behalf, what I decided I really want

to do is ask you (and remind myself) to please keep paying attention to the spiritual war going on around you and all over the world. And don’t ever stop praying for those who need Jesus and those on the front lines. It takes us all together. We are the Church.

In the Middle of Nowhere

From the Jesus Film Project

There is a nation in West Africa that is nearly all parched desert. Slavery here is legal. And there are few roads … if you can even call them that.

But that hasn’t stopped Saleem, a passionate evangelist. He drives his 4-wheel-drive truck around this sprawling country taking the good news to people who have never heard, letting them see “JESUS” or hear the soundtrack of this powerful film in their mother tongue … the very Word of God.

When the roads end or disappear into soft sand, he mounts a quad bike he carries in the bed of his truck to take him to his destination. One day following a heavy rain, he drove his truck as far as he could. In “the middle of nowhere,” he got stuck in the mud.

But getting stuck turned out to be a divine appointment! Saleem mounted his quad bike and rode some distance, looking for help. Approaching a small village, he heard music. It was the soundtrack of “JESUS.” He entered a building where he found a man listening to a radio. The man immediately turned it off.

Saleem said: “That music I heard you playing, I recognize it.” Fearing radicals, the man became defensive, “What music? There’s no music here.” “OK, well I need help. My truck is stuck in the mud …” The man replied, “I can help you. I own a tractor.” Riding together to the site they pulled the truck out. He then

Tallahassee Daughters of the Holy Cross Come to Tea

On September 21, the All Saints DHC Chapter

(Tallahassee, FL) hosted “A Deanery DHC Tea.” It had two purposes- one social, another service. In a chapter meeting, Vienna Pozniak, the chapter president, expressed a desire for our chapter members to become better acquainted with Daughters in the other Tallahassee chapters. Also, some of the chapter members are involved with a ministry that helps Tallahassee’s hurting and helpless population and wanted to acquaint others with the ministry. To accomplish both purposes, the chapter sponsored a tea, invited all the other local DHC chapters, plus other women interested in DHC, and feted attendees with a menu of canapes, cupcakes, and a wide variety of teas.

The speakers for the event were Beth Burns and Wendy Strickland, both administrators in the Good Samaritan Network, a ministry that provides counseling, housing and other services to homeless and abused persons in the Tallahassee area. They explained their services and presented several women who told about the services they had received from Good Samaritan and how the services improved their lives. [Good Samaritan aids men and women, but the

tea focused on the services to women.]

Most Daughters arrived early enough to enjoy a cup of tea and socialize before the program begun. Getting to know each other will likely lead to more joint ventures in the future. In fact, in March 2020, the All Saints Chapter will be providing an informal tea for the women served by Good Samaritan. At that tea, the women are not just served food, but are given toiletries and other needed items. All Saints Chapter invited the other local chapters to assist with the March tea. Some Daughters volunteered to help.

Letter from Lori I just left a meeting with a missionary from our church in Kyiv, a Chaplin to soldiers on the front lines of the war in eastern Ukraine. And there are 1000 things I want to tell you—about their stories, about the reality of war, about

The words in the picture translate to: “Where God calls you, He goes too”.

asked Saleem to spend the night. The two talked. Saleem set the man’s mind at ease, explaining that “the music I heard is associated with the religion I follow.” Saleem then asked, “May I show you a movie about JESUS, the Great Prophet Isa?” The man agreed.

In God’s providence, it turned out that this man, his host, was the village chief and the local leader of this people’s aggressive religion. He listened carefully and watched “JESUS” with his children. They hear the story of the gospel in their heart language, words that gripped their hearts. The holy Spirit did His supernatural work. The chief and two of his children came to Christ.

Saleem rejoiced. But he wanted to know where the chief had gotten that radio/audio player. The chief said it came from a friend 150 miles away. You see, the player actually came from Saleem! As part of his evangelistic ministry, he purchases radio/audio players in the city and superglues into them a micro SD card with “JESUS” and an audio Bible. The cards can’t be removed.

As He travels this vast nation, he gives them out so people can listen to “JESUS” and hear the Word of God. Where there is no radio reception, it’s all they can listen to. That’s what the chief was doing when Saleem’s truck became stuck in the mud – he was listening to “JESUS.” Saleem has gone back to the village to disciple the chief and his children and to show “JESUS” to others who have also come to Christ. Even a church has been established. Saleem reports it’s perhaps the most vibrant fellowship in that par of the country. Being stuck in the mud was a divine appointment!

Tenth Anniversary of the Founding

Committee of the Order of the Daughters of

the Holy Cross Retreat

September 17-20, 2019, seven members of the DHC formation committee each paid her own expenses to meet at Callaway Gardens, near Atlanta. On the tenth anniversary of the Order, we gathered to reflect on the love our God has shown to us as we labored and to his Order throughout its first ten years. Present were Jacque Crosby, and Julie Wahtola, first and second DHC Presidents; Jean Williams, current advisor to the council; Mariane Freehling, previous Advisor; Gail Wacker and Kathy Aspden, original Formation Committee members; and Susan Klos, appointed to the Committee following a resignation and our computer guru. Each member came prepared to lead a morning or evening service. We sang to Jesus in joyful praise. We called on him to bless our current Council whose pictures were posted around the room. Each of us wrote a note on each picture and sent them to the council members to bless, strengthen and encourage them. We asked God’s mercy on behalf of his Church, our families, our dear members who were unable to attend and ourselves. The two most memorable services were Morning Prayer in the lovely chapel at the Gardens and Friday Morning stations of the cross beside a private

peaceful Lake. From start to finish, Jesus poured out his blessings on his daughters. The fruits of the spirit abounded in our non-stop conversations as we renewed our love and concern for one another. While talking from early morning

until late into the night, we delighted in the treats we all brought and feasted on the generous provisions supplied by Jerry Freehling, who even in his absence, stepped right back into his role of hosting the committee.

Hungry Lambs

The Hungry Lambs project is in need of more food. They especially need

protein and fruit. Remember that all food should be in individual, easy to open, sealed portions.

Bishop Labhar’s Visit

There were eight of us at

the retreat this year. It was a

wonderful time to be quiet

and listen for our Lord.

In the Church

Each of us came away from the conference with a new appreciation of the need for prayer and involvement for the persecuted church in the world.

Silent Retreat

Bishop Labhar confirmed John Jacquet and Marlene Brewer; accepted Mark and Teri Raciappa; and heard Vienna Pozniak renew her vows.
