Dearest Community, Following in our founders’ footsteps, the Day Home staff and teachers strive to maintain a sanctuary where children feel secure and have the opportunity to learn at their greatest capacity. As our world becomes faster and filled with more entertainment, we are intentionally working to provide a language-rich program where children have low-tech, high-touch opportunities to engage, collaborate, explore, and learn something new.

This year, we initiated a three-year plan for growth and transformation that began with reflection and program assessment. As we plan the adaptation of our program to incorporate the latest brain science and trauma studies, we maintain the impor-tance of children being able to give adequate time to play and to follow the spark of their interests. This will always be how children explore and learn about the world around them.

As our society pushes children to an array of bright videos and games, our children rush to tables filled with homemade playdough, blocks, and paint. They become architects building communities in the sand box, scientists studying life cycles while weeding the garden, and doctors and teachers working together and caring for one another while playing house. They are engi-neers, laying the foundation for their lives with each and every experience.

Along the way, they learn letters and numbers, colors and shapes, to write and to discuss because they have a need to describe and document their experience. When our students leave the Day Home, they are ready to explore and navigate the in-creasing complexity of the elementary environment and the world outside our doors.

It is with your continued support that we are able to remain focused on our ever-lasting mission, keeping it current and research-based for each coming generation. We follow the wisdom of the elders who tell us “you are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” And with that, we begin a new day, as there is much more to be done.

In the Spirit,

Kathleen Shaheed Interim Executive Director

Dear Friends,It is with great affection and gratitude that I write to let you know about another exciting transition for the Day Home. On January 1, 2019 I will be stepping down as President of the Board and Vivian O’Neal has graciously agreed to take over the reins. I have been asked to remain on the Board and am pleased to do so. This transition has long been planned and will be another impor-tant step as Saint Vincent’s moves forward with confidence and commitment. I joined the Board in 1983 and have served as President since 1991. Under the leadership of the remarkable Corinne Mohrmann, along with Sisters Ann Maureen Murphy and Adriennt Andrianni, the Day Home has inspired, supported and sustained thousands of families and their wonderful children. It has been amazing to have been a small part of that history. The Board and Corinne were very strategic about her succession plans. It was always anticipated that I would stay in place while her successor was selected and settled into the new role. Kate Shaheed is now firmly ensconsed as Executive Director and has thoughtfully charted plans for our future, building on our endur-ing heritage and with wholehearted Board support. We are blessed that Vivian has agreed to become our President. She brings exceptional skills and a decades-long commitment to that position. Her association with Saint Vincent’s predates even my own. Early in her career she was the Day Home’s social worker, which has given her a special understanding of the importance and impact of our work. She went on to be an accomplished attorney and long-time Board member. She brings superb profes-sional skills, a well-honed vision, and a great institutional memory. I want to express my tremendous thanks to each of you for your kindness, generosity, and friend-ship to me and to Saint Vincent’s. It has meant the world to me and to the families we are honored to serve. The future is bright with promise. As Corinne has always reminded us: “As long as there is a Saint Vincent’s there will always be a place for a child to call home. “ With every good wish to you and your family,

Carol CorriganOutgoing Board Chair

With deepest gratitude to Hon. Carol A. Corrigan

I want to express my tremendous thanks to each of you for your kindness, generosity, and friendship to me and to Saint Vincent’s. It has meant the world to me and to the families we are honored to serve. The future is bright with promise.

We are the Barreto Sanchez family and we have been a part of the Day Home family for over 25 years. My Sisters and I have all sent our children to the Day Home. My four daughters Linda (17), Fernanda (14), Anabeth (11) and Kiara (5) loved learning and growing at SVDH. I work as a housekeeper and my husband is a labor worker. We know our kids are being well taken care of while we are at work. Without the Day Home in our lives, I would not have been able to work, which would have been very stressful on the family. My older daughter was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome as a young child. She was helped academically and well educated by the teachers at the Day Home with their speech and learning programs. It gave her the independence and confidence needed to continue to learn even with her disability. All of my daughters that attended SVDH have been very happy being there: The education they received set them up for educational success. My daughters have great aspirations for their future; Fernanda wants to be an immigration lawyer and Anabeth aspires to become an architect or electrical engineer. The Day Home gave them their academic start—and for that, we are forever grateful.
