SAINT THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2018

Our Church is a House of Prayer for all People! Our Church and Blessed Sacrament Chapel are open

7:00am-7:00pm, every day. The door on the left side of our main doors

remains unlocked. Please enter and exit through that door.

You are always welcome!

This weekend we celebrate the National Holiday of Father’s Day. In honor of this day, I share with you a variety of quotes about fathers.

Some are serious and sincere, some are in jest, and some are painfully true.

All are meant to call attention to fatherhood, its importance, and to encourage all men to be faithful to their responsibilities to be good husbands and fathers.

Charles Wadsworth (1814-1882): “By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.”

Mark Twain (1835-1910): “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Robert Frost (1874-1963): “The father is always a Republican toward his son, and his mother’s always a Democrat.”

Peter De Vries (1910-1993): “My father hated radio and he could not wait for television to be invented so that he could hate that too.”

Robert Orben (1927-): “Life was a lot simpler when what we honored was father and mother rather than all major credit cards.”

Spike Milligan (1918-2002): “My father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.”

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939): “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.”

Charles Lamb (1775-1834): “I am determined that my children shall be brought up in their father’s religion, if they can find out what it is.”

Rev. Theodore Hesburgh (1917-2015): “The most important thing that a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”

Clarence B. Kelland (1881-1964): “My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.”

In prayer, we remember all our fathers, living and deceased. Happy Father’s Day!

Considering Becoming Catholic? Are you searching for

A deeper relationship with God? A sense of belonging in a faith community? A greater fulfillment of your mission in life?

“Inquiry” is the first step in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process: a ministry that welcomes those who would like to explore whether full membership in the Catholic Church through Baptism or a Profession of Faith (if validly baptized in another Christian tradition), Confirmation, and Eucharist is God’s call in your life.

For details, contact Kathleen Bell, RCIA Coordinator, at 760-809-6526 or [email protected].

STM Mental Health Ministry Network STM is a member of the San Diego Diocesan Mental Health Ministry Network (MHMN) and has made a commitment to become a faith community that both understands mental illness and can provide compassionate support. If you or a loved one is experiencing mental health challenges, or if you would like to find out how to become a member, please contact us at 760-758-4100 x104 or [email protected].

Thank You to the Women’s Guild Our amazing Women’s Guild presented STM a check for $23,000 at their June luncheon! This group of women works all year with a variety of events to raise money for our Parish, including the Fashion Show luncheon, Game Day, Christmas raffle, Quilt raffle and more.

The $23,000 will be directed to the Seasons Campaign. $10,000 will purchase the last two of the Mosaic Panels that were available, and $13,000 will go to the Seasons Campaign Fund.

Many, many thanks to these incredible women for this most generous gift to STM! —Fr. Mike

Women’s Guild News Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud. —Maya Angelou

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue.” Rainbows were the theme of our Installation luncheon last Saturday at the Shadowridge Golf Club. Our Mistress of Ceremonies, Vikki Ramey, did an excellent job, describing the new officers as colors of the rainbow, the meaning of each color and how it relates to the strengths and duties of each board member. The 2018-2019 Board members are: Trish Feeley, President; Anna Marie Martinet, First Vice President/Membership; Judy Smith, Second Vice President/ Programs; Valerie Thompson, Treasurer; Henri Black, Recording Secretary; and Sharon Ornellas, Corresponding Secretary. And, don’t forget Past President, Kathy Gerhard, she is still with us, part of the rainbow too.

I anticipate an awesome year with this line up of great people! Stepping down is Barbara Barreras, but she assures us that she is stepping down but not out, she will help wherever she is needed. Thank you so much for your service to the Women’s Guild, Barbara.

After lunch, we presented Fr. Mike with a check for $23,000 from our fundraising activities for the Seasons Capital Campaign. From the big smile on Fr. Mike’s face and a rousing thanks, I think he was very happy with our donation. Excellent job, ladies!

The Grand Finale was the Quilt Raffle. Eleven beautiful quilts on display were won by the following Parishioners: Anne Eriksson, Sharon Ornellas, Monica Simler, Nancy Wozniak, Lilia Racelis, Marge Gillen, Patricia Feeley, Paula Miller, Pat Johnson Bonnie Cornish, and Maria Goncalves. Congratulations to all of you! Many thanks to our talented quilters who donated their time and talents!

The Women’s Guild will be off for the summer; however, the board will be busy planning lots of fun activities for next year. Monday, September 10, is our first meeting of the year.

If you would like to renew your membership or become a new member, membership forms are in Box 35 in the office and we will be on the plaza selling memberships in July. Cost is still $10 to join.

May God bless fathers on earth and in heaven on Father’s Day and every day. Happy Father’s Day! —Trish Feeley, President

Mark 4:32

Written in the Tower.

Give me Thy grace, good Lord, to set the world at naught; to set my mind fast upon Thee; and not to hang upon the blast of men’s mouths.

To be content to be solitary; not to long for worldly company; little and little utterly to cast off the world, and rid my mind of all the business thereof; not to long to hear of any worldly things, but that the hearing of worldly phantasies may be to me displeasant.

Gladly to be thinking of God; piteously to call for His help; to lean unto the comfort of God; busily to labour to love Him.

To know mine own vility and wretchedness; to humble and meeken myself under the mighty hand of God. To bewail my sins past; for the purging of them patiently to suffer adversity; gladly to bear my purgatory here; to be joyful of tribulations; to walk the narrow way that leadeth to life.

To bear the cross with Christ; to have the last things in remembrance; to have ever afore mine eye my death that is ever at hand; to make death no stranger to me; to foresee and consider the everlasting fire of hell; to pray for pardon before the Judge come.

To have continually in mind the passion that Christ suffered for me; for His benefits uncessantly to give Him thanks.

To buy the time again, that I before have lost; to abstain from vain confabulations; to eschew light, foolish mirth; and gladness; recreations not necessary to cut off; of worldly substance, friends, liberty, life and all, to set the loss at right nought for the winning of Christ.

To think my most enemies my best friends; for the brethren of Joseph could never have done him so much good with their love and favour as they did him with their malice and hatred.

These minds are more to be desired of every man than all the treasure of all the princes and kings, Christian and heathen, were it gathered and laid together all upon one heap.

TOWERS OF FAITH

Future Support & Legacy Planning Options

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the vision, leadership, and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is about the love and thought behind the gift, and not about the gift amount.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Wills, Living Trusts, Life Insurance, Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and

STM Endowment with CCFSD (Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego)

Parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

Do two or more members of your family know where to locate your Will, Living Trust

and/or Health Directive?

In the many years I have served Christ’s Church as a Priest, I have noticed that lay people are frequently afraid to share their spirituality. I have come to the conclusion that many lay people expect religious men and women to have spirituality but they don’t expect to have it themselves. I firmly believe that the spirituality of stewardship can help correct this false premise.

Let’s begin the corrective process by coming up with a definition of spirituality. I believe that the best and most barebones definition of spirituality is: “The lens through which we encounter and respond to God’s presence in our lives.”

My interest in stewardship was first piqued because I was looking for ways to get members of the Parish more involved in the life of the Parish. It was while I was searching for ways to present the spirituality of stewardship to members of the Parish that it dawned on me that if I were going to ask others to do something, I had to be willing to do it myself—always a good philosophy. My journey from introducing stewardship to embracing it for myself was an axial moment in my life as both a believer and as a Priest.

When the Parish leadership team first introduced stewardship and when I first embraced it, we asked members of the Parish to become stewards of the Good News of Jesus Christ. In the Parish bulletin, we did not ask for volunteers; we asked for stewards.

I embraced stewardship before the American Bishops wrote their wonderful 1992 pastoral letter, “Stewardship: A Disciples Response.” That document gave me a vocabulary to better explain stewardship and a format to help me evaluate my efforts to both embrace and live stewardship.

The Bishops explained stewardship as a four-step process: “What identifies a steward?

Safeguarding material and human resources and using them responsibly are one answer; so is generously giving of time, talent, and treasure. But being a Christian steward means more.

As Christian stewards, (1) we receive God’s gifts gratefully, (2) cultivate them responsibly, (3) share them lovingly in justice with others, (4) and return them with increase to the Lord.”

Please take time to read this statement from Bishop Flores who is the Bishop of Brownsville, Texas, a border Diocese to Mexico. His message represents the feeling and perspective of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

When we rip children out of the arms of their parents, we are ripping out the heart and soul of our Nation. Is this how we are making America great again?

—Rev. Michael Ratajczak

Statement from the Most Rev. Daniel E. Flores, Bishop of Brownsville on the Separation of Immigrant Parents and Children

The systematic separation of immigrant parents and children at the border is simply cruel. A nation has a right to secure its sovereign border, but that does not mean that it may use any means available to deter immigrants who seek to ask for asylum.

By jailing parents on what is usually a misdemeanor charge, parents who cross the border with their children are being separated from them. Thus, the government itself is creating the children’s status as “unaccompanied.” Lawyers and public defenders tell me that parents are not being told where their crying children are being taken.

This nation, for the sake of its soul, must learn to weep with these children, and all the children who are being instrumentalized and commodified in our midst. I urge the Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Brownsville, and all persons of good will to write to the President, the Attorney General, and members of Congress, to insist that this manner of enforcement come to an end. I also ask that we as a community pray for families and children affected by this enforcement policy, and that our country’s laws be crafted and administered with human compassion.

country home and endeavored to ignore the raging controversy. Nevertheless, it was widely

remarked that he declined to attend the coronation of Queen

Anne.

In 1534 an Act of Succession was

proclaimed. All the king’s subjects were required to take an oath recognizing the offspring of Henry

and Anne as true successors to the throne. More had no problem

with this. As far as he was concerned the king was free to

declare any successor he liked. However, the oath also required

an avowal that the king’s marriage with Catherine had been no true marriage and a repudiation of “any

foreign authority, prince or potentate.” Such an oath

represented a decisive break with the authority of the pope. This

oath More refused to take. Consequently, on April 17 he was

Thomas More was one of the most highly respected men of his time. A successful barrister, a

judge known for his scrupulous integrity, a scholar, famous for his

wit and learning, he rose by sheer merit to the highest status of any

commoner in England. After a series of important public offices, he was in 1529 appointed by King

Henry VIII to the post of Lord Chancellor of England. To this his

friend Erasmus, the Continental humanist, remarked, “Happy the

commonwealth where kings appoint such officials.”

Despite his achievements, More had little ambition for worldly success. More was a man of deep

and demanding faith. In his youth he had considered a monastic

vocation before deciding instead that he was called to serve God in

the world. While outwardly he enjoyed a life of comfort, in the privacy of his spiritual life he wore

a hair shirt, attended daily Mass, and practiced a strict discipline of

prayer.

More maintained a large

household and took special delight in his children. His role in

overseeing the education of his daughters, especially Margaret, his eldest and favorite, was

considered remarkable for the time. After the death of his

beloved first wife, he quickly married an older widow, Alice.

She proved a loyal wife and a good stepmother, though she was

prone to exasperation with her

husband’s scholarly friends, his sense of humor, and his costly scruples.

King Henry had reckoned wisely on his chancellor’s brilliance and

honesty. In all matters of his office More served with loyalty and

distinction. But circumstances were to evolve to the point that Henry required a more absolute

loyalty than More could offer. For some years the court of Henry

had been moving toward a fateful collision with the authority of the

Catholic Church. The issue was the king’s desire to annul his

marriage to Catherine of Aragon so that he might marry Anne Boleyn. Catherine refused to

acquiesce in this scheme, and the pope upheld the inviolability of

their marriage. When Henry made clear his intention to have his way,

regardless of the church’s ruling, More resigned his office rather

than publicly oppose the position of the king. He retired to his

which proclaimed the king “only supreme head of the Church of England.” Thomas continued to

maintain his silence. Finally in June he was brought to trial. On the

basis of perjured evidence, he was convicted of having spoken

against the Acts and sentenced to death. Now, with his fate settled, Thomas at last broke his silence.

He denied that Parliament had the authority to set up a temporal

lord as head of the church. No more could the English

Parliament overrule the law of the universal church, he declared,

than the City of London could make a law against an act of Parliament. Finally, he addressed

the lords who condemned him, noting that while St. Paul had

persecuted St. Stephen, “and yet be they now both twin holy saints

in Heaven…so I verily trust, and shall therefore

right heartily pray, that

though your lordships have

now here on earth been

arrested and imprisoned in the

Tower of London.

He remained there for fifteen

months. All the while the court pressured him either to take the

oath or to state his reasons for withholding his assent. More would do neither, believing that

as long as he kept his opinions to himself he could not be convicted

of treason. He was presented with a parade of clergy and

bishops who all (save Bishop John Fisher) had signed the oath. More

maintained that others must abide by their own conscience, as he must be true to his own.

Meanwhile, the miseries of prison life, including cold, hunger, and

vermin, were compounded by pressure from his family. When

his wife tried to coax him to alter his course, he responded, “My good woman, you are no good at

doing business. Do you really want me to exchange eternity for

twenty years?”

On February 1, 1535, Parliament

passed the Acts of Supremacy,

(Continued from page 1) judges of my condemnation, we may yet hereafter in Heaven merrily all meet together to

everlasting salvation.”

He spoke in similar terms as he

bade farewell to his loyal daughter Margaret: “I will pray for

us all with my whole heart, that we may meet one day in heaven, where we shall forever be gay

and have no more pains.”

On July 6 he was taken to the site

of execution. Addressing those gathered about he made brief

remarks before laying his head on the executioner’s block: “I die in

and for the faith of the holy Catholic Church. Pray for me in this world, and I shall pray for

you in that world. Pray for the king that it please God to send

him good counselors. I die as the king’s true servant, but God’s

first.”

Thomas More was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935. His

feast and that of his fellow martyr John Fisher are

celebrated on June 22.

another person’s mouth, no sooner spoken but gone? Thus whoever finds his delight in them is feeding on wind.”

Words of St. Thomas More

In his book Utopia, Thomas More coined the term “utopia” which is a pun meaning both “good place” and “no place.” More’s Utopia is

discovered on a voyage to the newly discovered Americas. It is one of the first books to invoke the analogy between the great voyages of

discovery and the discoveries of the mind. He is also thought to have introduced “fact,” “taunt,” “shuffle,” “paradox,” “pretext,” “meeting,”

“monosyllable,” and “anticipate” into the written English language.

Utopia

O Lord, give us a mind that is humble, quiet, peaceable, patient and charitable, and a taste of your Holy Spirit in all our thoughts, words, and deeds. O Lord, give us a lively faith, a firm hope, a fervent charity, a love of

you. Take from us all lukewarmness in meditation and all dullness in prayer. Give us fervor and delight in thinking of you, your grace, and your tender compassion toward us. Give us, good Lord, the grace to work

for the things we pray for. — Thomas More
