    HYMNS OF THE DAY

    RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION SECOND TONE

When you descended into death, O life immortal, you de-

stroyed Hades with the splendor of your divinity, and when

you raised the dead from the depths of darkness, all the

heavenly powers shouted: O giver of life, Christ our God,

    glory to you.

APOLYTIKION FOR THE NATIVITY ΟF THE THEOTOKOS

Your Nativity, O Theotokos, has proclaimed joy to the

whole world; for from you has dawned the Sun of Right-

eousness, Christ our God, annulling the curse and bestow-

ing the blessing, abolishing death and granting us life ever-

    lasting

TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (HOLY WISDOM)

Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the

fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit

down upon them and through them the universe You

drew unto Your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You.

    KONTAKION—JOACHIM AND ANNA

In your holy birth, Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna

were rid of the shame of childlessness; Adam and Eve of

the corruption of death. And so your people, free of the

guilt of their sins, celebrate crying: "The barren one gives

birth to the Theotokos, who nourishes our life."

    EPISTLE READING

    Priest: Let Us Attend…

Reader: Sing praises to our God, sing praises… clap your

    hands, all you nations.

    Priest: Wisdom...

Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Galatians (2:16-20)

BRETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of

the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have be-

lieved in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in

Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of

the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to

be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners,

is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up

again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a

transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I

might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no

longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I

now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who

loved me and gave himself for me.

    GOSPEL READING

The Reading is from The Gospel of St. Mark

    (8:34-38,9:1))

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him

deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For who-

ever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life

for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it

profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For

what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is

ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful

generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed,

when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy an-

gels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are

some standing here who will not taste death before they

see the kingdom of God come with power."

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS The festival is over!! A big thank you to ALL the ladies who helped

bake for the pastry booth. From the baklava, and diples to the

galatabouriko, everyone thanks you from the bottom of their

‘stomachs’! Baking chairmen Eleni Manolelis, Zoe Fovos and

Mary Kezios and their “crews” deserve our deepest thanks for all

of their time and effort. To all of the ‘workers’ who came and

worked in the pastry booth - some for hours and hours - again,

thank you thank you! I must thank Board member Olga Jordan

for being a ‘booth captain’ with me and all of her work schedul-

ing the volunteers, plus all of the running we did for pastries not to

mention the clean up work at night. It was quite exhausting. The

weekend was wonderful! A special thank you again to the Chair-

men of the festival, John Boudouvas and Eleni Manolelis, their

committee and our spiritual leaders Father Bakas and Father

Boyd, for putting this all together in just 5 months!

Our first meeting of the new Ecclesiastical year will be on Septem-

ber 22nd. Please mark your calendars and join us. We have two

amazing speakers planned. First we are pleased to announce

we have Dr. Dennis Holmes, MD. Dr. Holmes is head of the Los An-

geles Woman’s Center and was the Chief of Breast Surgery at

USC Norris Cancer Center for 7 years. Dr. Holmes is a pioneer in

the treatments of breast cancer. Along with Dr. Holmes will be Dr.

Lacy Le, MD. Dr. Le is a specialist in Plastics and Reconstructive

Surgery. We look forward to seeing you.

STUFFED ANIMALS PROJECT: We have a new collection for the

month of September. In memory of 6-year old Ileana, the niece

of our board member Allison Stavaridis, we will be collecting new

stuffed animals. Ileana died of brain cancer back in April. Allison

will be taking all of the new stuffed animals to children undergo-

ing cancer treatments at the UCLA Mattel Pediatric Hospital. If

you would like to donate a new stuffed animal, please bring it to

church on a Sunday in the month of September OR bring it to our

    meeting on September 22.

ing all proceeds to Holy Cross Hellenic College. Please support

our seminarians on the 22nd. This is a National obligation every

September at the beginning of the Ecclesiastical year.

Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our

Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the

unemployed, the orphaned, … those who may need assistance.

“For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always

    have me.” John 12:8.
