This Is Our Faith

Deacon’s Desk

WHAT DO DEACONS DO?

NOT LONG AGO, on the day after Christmas, the church remembered Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr and one of the first of a group of seven appointed in the early church to ensure the equal distribution of food in the community (Acts 6:1-6). This event is seen as the beginning of the diaconate (from the Greek diakonia, “service”). Deacons’ originally independent office faded after the first few centuries as the role of priests and bishops expanded. After that period the diaconate was simply one of the transitional steppingstone to priesthood. The permanent diaconate, as an independent role, was restored to the church by Pope Paul VI in 1967 after the Second Vatican Council. Those training for the permanent diaconate may be a celibate or married man over the age of 35. After the proper theological and pastoral training, he is ordained a deacon; that makes him a sharer in the church’s teaching authority. If the local bishop allows, he may preach. His liturgical responsibilities include baptizing, distributing Holy Communion, presiding at funerals, burials, Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, officiating at marriages, and leading worship (but not in place of the priest at Mass). In addition, deacons frequently lead the community, especially in ministry to the disadvantaged.

Next week’s scripture insights: Readings for Sunday, June 9, 2019 Solemnity of Pentecost: Day: Acts 2:1–11 1 Cor 12:3b–7, 12–13 or Rom 8:8–17 Ps 104:1, 24, 29–30, 31, 34 "Veni, Sancte Spiritus" Jn 20:19–23 or 14:15–16, 23b–26

The giving of the Spirit to the new people of God crowns the mighty acts of the Father in salvation history. The Jewish feast of Pentecost called all devout Jews to Jerusalem to celebrate their birth as God's chosen people, in the covenant Law given to Moses at Sinai (see Leviticus 23:15-21; Deuteronomy 16:9-11). In today's First Reading the mysteries prefigured in that feast are fulfilled in the pouring out of the Spirit on Mary and the Apostles (see Acts 1:14).

The Spirit seals the new law and new covenant brought by Jesus, written not on stone tablets but on the hearts of believers, as the prophets promised (see 2 Corinthians 3:2-8; Romans 8:2). The Spirit is revealed as the life-giving breath of the Father, the Wisdom by which He made all things, as we sing in today's Psalm. In the beginning, the Spirit came as a “mighty wind” sweeping over the face of the earth (see Genesis 1:2). And in the new creation of Pentecost, the Spirit again comes as “a strong, driving wind” to renew the face of the earth. As God fashioned the first man out of dust and filled him with His Spirit (see Genesis 2:7), in today's Gospel we see the New Adam become a life-giving Spirit, breathing new life into the Apostles (see 1 Corinthians 15:45,47). Like a river of living water, for all ages He will pour out His Spirit on His body, the Church, as we hear in today's Epistle (see also John 7:37-39). We receive that Spirit in the sacraments, being made a “new creation” in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15). Drinking of the one Spirit in the Eucharist (see 1 Corinthians 10:4), we are the first fruits of a new humanity – fashioned from out of every nation under heaven, with no distinctions of wealth or language or race, a people born of the Spirit.

Thoughts to Consider this week

FORGIVENESS ISN’T JUST A NICE IDEA When we sit in church, forgiveness sounds like a religious ideal. We may even view forgiveness as a soft and sentimental notion: a be-nice-to-bullies ideology for Turn-the-Other-Cheek Week. But philosophers from Plato to modern thinkers like Hannah Arendt have suggested that forgiveness is also a vital and necessary political action. Forgiveness is the only action that moves history forward, releasing us all from the consequences of the past, what we did or failed to do. We can remain here, moored to old injuries and injustices. Or we can forgive, and liberate the future-forgiving hearts, so that we can be instruments of unity in our world today.

WHEN STONE MEETS SPIRIT

Which spiritual guide governs your life: the Ten Commandments or the Holy Spirit? It may sound like an odd choice, but many Christians seem confused about the source of guidance central to followers of Jesus. Saint Paul uses the shocking phrase “ministry of death” to describe the Commandments, contrasting them to the “ministry of the Spirit.” He simply means that binding yourself to the law can only condemn you in the end, whereas surrender to the Spirit’s authority can save you. Granted, it’s easier to erect stone tablets, but let’s enthrone the Spirit in our hearts.
