TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
References are an important part of any job applica-
tion. We choose them with great care, often searching for peo-
ple with authority and responsibility. We ask their permission
to use their names and give them freedom to speak honestly
about us. In addition to knowing us, they must be trustworthy
and honorable - able to assess our strength and weaknesses and
to articulate them. A lot depends on their judgment. When
John came to write his gospel, he saw Jesus as God’s candi-
date, and John the Baptist as the one giving the reference. The
Baptist gives us a credible and trustworthy reference, boldly
proclaiming the truth that Jesus as Savior. Today, we hear part
of that holy reference.
First, John refers to Jesus as the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sins of the world. To the Jewish people and to
an early Judeo-Christian Church listening to this gospel, the
image of the lamb would immediately evoke memories of the
feast of Passover - that great celebration of liberation from
slavery in Egypt. By referring to Jesus as the Lamb, John ref-
erences him as the bearer of forgiveness, the liberator whose
self-sacrifice brings reconciliation and deliverance from sin,
and invites all to taste the freedom of God’s children.
Second, John speaks of Jesus as the one who comes
after him but ranks ahead because he existed before him.
Clearly John has intimate and deeply spiritual knowledge, re-
vealed by God, about who Jesus truly is. He knows that Jesus
was born after him in time but that he existed before him - a
clear reference to Jesus’ divinity.
Finally, John refers to the event we celebrated last
week: the baptism of Jesus. With complete conviction, he
speaks from the heart as he recalls the voice of the Father and
the anointing of the Spirit: Now I have seen and testified that
he is the Son of God. That is one extraordinary reference!
How should we respond to this reference? Shouldn’t it
give us confidence that Jesus truly is who he claims to be? It’s
a reference that is confirmed over and over in the lives of the
saints. St. Paul gives his reference today when he describes
Jesus as the sanctifier and Lord. But as with all references,
they can only bring us so far. In many ways, they are really
secondhand knowledge.
For it is only in the personal, intimate knowledge of
Christ, found in the life of faith and service, that we truly wit-
ness to what we believe about Jesus. May our reference this
week on behalf of Jesus be one that speaks from our hearts,
and gives honest assessment of the difference he makes in our
lives so that others might just be intrigued and might ask the
question: How can I, too, encounter the Lamb of God?
God Love Ya!

Parish Registration
It is IMPORTANT that all Catholics within our bounda-
ries be registered and be active participants of the
parish. Circumstances often change registration status. If
you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you
need to be sure you are registered correctly in the parish.
• Have you moved away from your parental home
(not just for college)?
• Have you recently changed your marital status?
• Are you living with your parents, are over 18, and
not receiving your own mailings and
envelopes?
If you answered yes to any of the above, please call the
rectory office to update your registration status.
If you made your sacraments here at St. Richard/Holy
Spirit or went to school here does NOT automatically
register you in the parish.
In order to receive a Letter of Eligibility from the pastor
to be a godparent or sponsor, you MUST be a registered
and active participant of the parish.
New families moving into the parish…..Welcome! You

Job Openings at Roman Catholic High School Maintenance/Custodial. Candidate should be reliable, self-motivated and possess an attention to detail.
This is a 12-month, full-time position. For complete job description, send resume to
Called By Name By Mary Katharine Deeley
When I was ten, my teacher decided to call me by my first name, Mary, rather than by my family name, Kathy, part of my middle name. My teacher felt we should honor the Blessed Virgin by calling me Mary. The name Katharine had been in my mother’s family for years, and she liked its strength. It was an abrupt switch, but like many children, I quickly got used to responding to either name—and sometimes to both.
Names tell us something about a person. Today’s Scriptures speak to the singularity of the Incarna-tion by talking about names people gave Jesus. The early Church looked through the sacred Scrip-tures of the Old Testament and realized that Jesus was like the figure in the prophecies of Isaiah, so they came to know him as servant (one who does God’s will), covenant (a promise between two par-ties), and light to the nations. Paul calls him Mes-siah (Christos in Greek) and Lord. And John refers to him as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” and the “Son of God.” We haven’t yet been able to articulate the fullness of who Jesus is. We believe he is fully God and fully human and that he came out of love for us to save us from sin and death. In our attempt to un-derstand that, we’ve given him many names. Each reveals a little more about who he is for us and who he is with God. What is your name for Jesus now, and what does that mean to you? †
• The next time you pray, ask Jesus
to call you by name. Then
spend time in silence
listening for that call.
Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2017 Reconciliation – The Love of Christ
Compels Us (2 Corinthians 5:14-20)
The theme of this year’s Christian Unity week of prayer is “Reconciliation – the love of Christ Compels us (referenced from 2 Corinthians 5: 14). Pope Francis explains that this biblical text emphasizes reconcilia-tion as a gift from God, intended for all of creation. As a result of God´s action, those who have been reconciled in Christ are called, in turn, to proclaim this reconciliation in word and deed, living no longer for them-selves, but for Christ. The love of Christ compels us to pray, but also to move beyond our prayers for unity among Christians. All Christians need the gift of God’s reconcilia-tion. Above all, they need it for their common witness to the world. Please join us in praying for Christian Unity.
