From Father George’s Desk…As we celebrate the 244th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of

Independence this weekend, the nation seems to be hopelessly locked into a downward spiral of bitterness and divisiveness,

compounded by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has upended life in this country and around the world. And, as a nation, we

continue to reckon with racism, America’s original sin. Name-calling, scapegoating, vilification, and heated but empty political rhetoric

seems to have replaced a substantial and meaningful discussion of the issues which confront our nation. It is all too easy for us to

become cynical or disheartened. In late 1776, in the darkest days of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine wrote, “What we obtain

too cheap, we esteem too lightly:—’Tis dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to set a proper price upon

its goods; and it would be strange indeed, if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated….” Independence Day

celebrates that which is best about us and our country but we know that our work is not yet complete. Yes, we live in a free society,

thanks in large part to the sacrifices of the generations that have come before us, but so long as prejudice and injustice are present,

not all citizens can enjoy the blessings of freedom. As we celebrate our nation’s birth may we never esteem our freedom too lightly or

take it for granted. Let us pray for and work for true justice, the only path to true peace, so that all Americans can enjoy the blessings

of a free society. Happy Independence Day!

You may have noticed in the parish calendar that Bishop Malesic is coming to St. Regis on July 16 to celebrate the Diocesan

Scout Convocation Mass. This celebration of Catholic Scouting in the diocese is normally held in Greensburg in early May but had

to be rescheduled because of coronavirus and, since I am the diocesan Scout Chaplain, the celebration has been moved here. Nor-

mally we would welcome all comers to such an event but because of the limits on our seating due to coronavirus mitigation, we must

limit attendance to families involved in the Scouting program from around the diocese. Thanks for your understanding.

During July we will continue playing catch up with our missed parish events. Over the following three weekends, we will be

celebrating First Holy Communion with this year’s class. We have limited each Mass to no more than five first communicants to

allow for adequate seating and Gillen Hall will be on standby for overflow seating, if necessary, as we do on Christmas. And for those

concerned about such things, with only a few children at each Mass, there should be no noticeable change in the length of Mass.

After serious consideration it has been decided that this year’s parish picnic, scheduled for August 23, should be

cancelled. The requirements of social distancing would have been difficult to maintain and the serving of a potluck cookout would

have been problematic, to say the least. Last year’s picnic was one of my early experiences at St. Regis and I was looking forward to

another. I will anxiously look forward to this wonderful afternoon of parish fellowship to return next summer.

PARISH—YOUTH—RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

DID YOU KNOW……..There is a Charity Fund here at St.

Regis to help you with a variety of expenses. Call Mike at ext.

204 if you need help or have any questions.

“Petition Book”

As a people of God, we are asked to always pray for one another. Everyone is invited to write personal intentions in the Petition Book, which is located on a podium near the statue of Mary. Many of our parishioners read these inten-tions written in the Petition Book and pray for them in their daily prayers.

We have a wonderful opportunity for you if you would like to share your faith with the children and youth of this parish. We are in need of catechists, aides and substitutes this coming school year. You don’t have to be a teacher, just have a love of our Catholic faith and a desire to pass on that faith to our children. Please think about this opportunity and pray about it. If you feel this is something you would like to do or if you have any questions, please contact Karen in the Office of Faith Formation as soon as possible. 412-372-4577– ext. 208.

R.C.I.A. Day of Inquiry… If you are interested in seeing if the Catholic Faith is right for you, or if you need to “catch-up” on your sacraments, join us for a Day of Inquiry on Monday, July 13th at 7:00pm in the Conference Room. We will talk about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) and answer any questions you may have. For more information, contact the Office of Faith Formation.

Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God. 1 Peter 2:16 From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Freedom is exercised in relationships between human beings. Every human person, created in the image of God, has the natural right to be recognized as a free and responsible being. All owe to each other this duty of respect. The right to the exercise of freedom, especially in moral and religious matters, is an inalienable requirement of the dignity of the human person. This right must be recog-nized and protected by civil authority within the limits of the common good and public order. Freedom and

grace, by the working of grace, the Holy Spirit educates us in spiritual freedom in order to make us free collaborators in his work in the Church and in the world: Almighty and merciful God, in your goodness take away from us all that is harmful, so that, made ready both in mind and body, we may freely accomplish your will.

A reminder: Exposition & Adoration of the Lord will be next Wednesday, July 15th from 8:30am till noon. Please plan to attend and spend some time with the Lord.

The Army of the Lord

A man was coming out of church one Easter morning, and the pastor was standing at the door as always to shake hands. He grabbed the man by the hand and pulled him aside. The pastor said to him, “Son, we need you to join the Army of the Lord!” The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Father.” “Then how come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?” the pastor questioned. He whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”

A sense of humor is a gift from God. Laughter unites us. Funny things help us get through the difficulties of life. Without humor this would be a lot harder.

How do you make holy water?

Boil the hell out of it!

Jesus was standing over the women caught

in adultery and challenged the crowd that

“He who is without sin, cast the first stone.”

Suddenly, a rock hits the back of his

head. Jesus turns and exclaims,

“Mom!”

Man: What is a million years like to you? God: Like one second. Man: What is a million dollars like to you? God: Like one penny. Man: Can I have a penny? God: Just a second.

A priest, a minister and a rabbi are discussing when life begins. The priests says, “It begins at conception”. The minister says, “Life begins at 24 weeks gestation”. The rabbi says, “You are both wrong, Life begins when the kids move out of the house and the dog dies.”
