Children’s Liturgy of the Word - December 15

It surely dates me, but I remember an episode of the TV series “The Odd Couple” with Tony Randall and Jack Klugman – from Neil Simon’s play by the same name. I think it was Randall’s character, Felix Unger, who taught me the old saying, “When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me,” playing on the spelling of the word.

The truth of that saying stays with me even now, 40 years after the show ended. It’s particularly apt, in Advent, when we (and our ancestors in faith) learn that God seldom comes to us in ways we expect. Our expectations and way of looking for the Lord aren’t all that different from those of the Israelites, who looked for a mighty king to rise up, overthrow their oppressors and establish Israel as the Kingdom of God on earth.

They weren’t looking for a baby born in poverty in a cattle stall or for the carpenter who preached a radical departure from the established religious outlook of their time. And they certainly weren’t looking for a “King of the Jews,” condemned as a common criminal, subjected to capital punishment between two other criminals. Their assumptions about the Kingdom of God as they expected it to be to clouded their senses so they didn’t recognize the Kingdom when Jesus said it was in their midst.

We look back to his birth, sanitized and sweetened by our desire to focus on the newborn baby, the Son of the Virgin surrounded by adoring parents, chubby little angels and antiseptic-cleansed sheep and hay. We fail to see the humiliation and unmajestic conditions of Jesus’ coming into the world. Like our ancestors in faith, we fail to see the reality unfolding in front of us.

Amid the “Glorias”, candles, and singing, we tend to forget that Jesus comes to us in what Blessed Teresa of Calcutta called, “that distressing disguise.” Now, am I writing against the beauty of our liturgical celebrations? No. Our liturgy is meant to help us recall the deeds of God in the world. We are meant to remember and our memory should be an honest one. There was no crown of victory, no glory of resurrection without the humiliation of the cross and the death of Jesus, which he modeled for us in his ministry and in the hours before his execution.

All of this goes to say that our Advent observance should be made with open eyes. We look for the Lord and we should look for him where he will be - not where we expect him to be. Jesus, Son of God, eternal King, doesn’t live in a palace. He lives in the poor, the neglected, the elderly with no one to care for them; in the downtrodden and the prisoner. He lives in those who dwell in fear and darkness, in those who wait longingly for light. He lives in our brothers and sisters – those to whom we give no thought — barely even a glance. He lives in us so we may bring him to all those others!

Do we want Advent and Christmas to have real meaning and joy? If so, we must pray for open eyes and open hearts so we can love and give without expectation of return or repayment. We must seek, “Jesus in that distressing disguise.” If we are to follow him, we must go where he goes — even to the Cross at the end of the road with only our faith to reassure us that it isn’t really the end, but only the beginning of the life Jesus offers us.

North Central Ohio Vocations Club will be meeting December 9th, in the Franciscan Activity Center after the 5:30 pm Mon-day evening Mass at St. Peter's. Fr. Eric Culler will be our guest presenter who will tell us about his trip to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro Brazil in August. Guests are welcome.

No Room at the Inn? Mary and Joseph brought their first-born child into the world in a stable because there was no one to show them hospitality. We are going to have a great many visitors in for our Christmas Masses. Let us be sure to show them warm and welcoming hospitality in Church by making room for all who come to worship with us. On a related note, as in past years, there is no reserved seating and seats may only be held for late-arriving family members until the ushers start seating people. Thank you in advance for your hospitality.

YEAR-ROUND MISSION OF SERVICE Especially during this Christmas season but also throughout the school year, youth at St. Peter’s Parish and students at St. Pe-ter's School are reminded and aware of the fact that it is part of their mission to care for those in need. Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner

A very special “Thank You” to everyone who participated in this year’s Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the high school. Over 500 meals were provided this year. The dinner would not have been possible without the help of all the volunteers, many who worked on Thanksgiving Day, the Thanksgiving Dinner Com-mittee, the individuals who cooked turkeys, the many people who donated desserts, and the people who donated financially. Working together as a Parish Community we were able to con-tinue our tradition of providing meals on Thanksgiving Day. Food that was left over was donated to the Friendly House (who also provided meals on Thanksgiving Day) and will be used to help feed the needy.

WONDERS The normal response to a surprise is amazement, gratitude, and delight. By definition, we don’t antici-pate surprises. Their occurrence reminds us that we cannot always guess or shape the future. Granted, we do what we can do; we attend to the daily tasks, as we must. For grace is surely here in the mundane, and God is in the details. But God is in the happy surprises, too. Today’s readings are filled with startling developments. We hear the clarion cry of one of those rare prophets announcing the coming of the Lord. Isaiah proclaims startling, surprising images of the nearly im-possible reconciliation of opposites: calf and lion, leopard and young goat, child and serpent. Isaiah’s vision sees all of these creatures living in harmony. This is Eden again; this is paradise. It is God’s surprise and promise. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace” is the often-memorized definition of sacrament, but through four decades of reform we have rediscovered the power of sacrament to bestow grace by reshaping our lives as individuals and communities. Not so long ago, most people were not attentive to the nature of sacrament as an act of the Church, a power that flows from the Body of Christ. Fifty years ago, we were inclined to see a sacrament as an encounter between Christ and an individual. Today, we see that definition does not go far enough. God’s grace is not a trickle, but a gushing torrent washing over the whole Church. Like a photographer pulling back the camera for a broader picture, today we are not only interested in the person who is being baptized, reconciled, or anointed. We think about how celebrating a sacrament transforms a community. We think about the grace given by Christ to the community that baptizes or marries or ordains or confirms. Sacraments are for the good of the commu-nity. Even when it appears to be a private, hidden moment, as in individual confession, a sacrament is always for the sake of the whole body, always more than “meets the eye.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-10). Psalm — Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72). Second Reading — Glorify God by living in harmony with one an-other, welcoming each other as Christ welcomed you (Romans 15:4-9). Gospel — Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism; repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3:1-12).

Like John the Baptist, every parent “prepares the way of the Lord” in the hearts of their children. Christian parents are the voice to their children. Advent is a good time to ask; “How do I help my children to know Jesus?” (Bud Ozar)

END OF THE YEAR GIVING:

If you are considering a charitable, tax deductible donation for the current tax year, please remember your parish among your charities. You may wish to consider a donation(s) to any of the following: The Msgr. Dunn Foundation, Spartan Athletic Boosters, the Annual Tuition Drive (ATD, 2014/15), the restricted fund for Sanctuary and Liturgical needs, or a donation to the organ preservation fund. And don’t forget Catholic Charities, the Feed the Needy program, and food gift cards for the needy (drop off at the parish office). As we begin the new liturgical year with Advent, our thoughts turn to the many blessings which God has be-stowed on us. Why not share these blessings with others? God bless you for your love and sacrifice! Father Gregory Hite, Pastor
