~FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK~ Play on…
It was the worst autumn of her life. She had just begun teaching at Harvard– for a first-generation college student fresh our of graduate
school, that was stressful enough. But three weeks into the semester, just as she was feeling something “approximating normal,” her be-
loved father died. A month after that, she and her husband were unexpectedly evicted from their apartment. A month after that, her mom
was diagnosed with breast cancer. And, during the spring semester, she suffered from adrenal fatigue and didn’t fully recover until well
into the summer.
No one would have blamed her if she skipped church during those troubled months, but she didn’t. She couldn’t. Because a few
weeks before that awful fall semester began, her church’s long-time pianist moved away. She volunteered to take on the role– and, in the
end, what started as an imposition turned out to be a blessing.
“The church I attend is not a wealthy one, so it is difficult to find a skilled musician who is willing to work dependably for what we
can pay,” she writes. I grew up playing the piano in church. It’s a routine I know well; I know all the songs inside and out, and it’s a skill
that comes easily to me. It’s something I enjoy. Thanks to my day job at Harvard, I don’t need extra cash. Still, the most stressful year of
my life seems like a strange time to take on a pro bono side gig as a church musician. And, honestly, if the position had opened up even
one month later, I might never have agreed to start.
“In many ways, though, it was precisely that additional ‘job’ that saved my sanity during such a hard year. There were so many
weeks that it would have been tempting just to sleep in or to spend those hours on Sunday with Netflix, in order to simply rest. But I
couldn’t, because I had to be there. There had to be music. And, in subtle ways that I didn’t appreciate at the time, being in that space
meant being surrounded by loved ones, [but] by people… whose lives and struggles were also drastically different from my own. Being in
that simple sanctuary every week, under the arched ceiling, before the cross, surrounded by the hum of friendly chaos, furnished me with a
broader and more robust sense of self by de-centering my own central importance.
“When I played that music, my body became a conduit through which the bonds between all of the people gathered there– old and
young, poor and less poor, every shade of tan and brown– grew stronger as we sang together. While I wasn’t fully aware of it at the time,
the experience of sharing music with others turned out to be what I needed most during a time when everything else felt uncertain and
shaky.”
Despite the stresses of work and the family crises she had to deal with, this young college professor managed to hear the voice of the
Good Shepherd and heed his call to be a source of peace and support for his “flock.” Like Jesus the “gate,” she becomes a “conduit
through which the bonds of all people gathered there… [grew] stronger as we sang together. Every life is created by God for one pur-
pose: to manifest his love for all. That is the ultimate test of the Christian vocation, that is the Good Shepherd’s call to everyone in his
flock: to live faith that takes on the Good Shepherd’s work of being a “gate” to God’s Kingdom of reconciliation and peace.
Dear Friends,
Christ is Risen!
This fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as Good Shepherd’s Sunday. It is a Sunday where we not only remem-
ber the Resurrection of the Lord, but how we hear His voice and find abundant life in God’s love. Are we listening to the voice of
the Good Shepherd? Are we learning to imitate the Good Shepherd in our relationships with family and friends?
Today is also a day on which we are reminded to pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, religious and
consecrated life.
This Sunday we celebrate the First Holy Communion of our second grade class. May God bless them and may they always
have the courage and faith to follow Jesus the Good Shepherd.
If you haven’t checked out our new St. Patrick website, please do so. You will find a lot of information pertaining to our par-
ish community and upcoming events. Also, did you ever read our new mission statement? These words describe who and what we
are. Please take a look at it.
Next week is Mother’s Day weekend and we will be honoring our mothers living and deceased in a special way at all of our
Masses. It is also the 50th Anniversary of our church building. Bishop Murry will preside at our 11:00 a.m. liturgy. All are wel-
come to a reception to follow. We need our wonderful bakers to volunteer to bake cookies for our reception as we mark this mile-
stone in our parish history. Make every effort to attend and support our anniversary. Also, Bishop Murry would love to congratulate
all of you for your hard work and dedication to the church.
In this week’s bulletin you will find the minutes from our February Pastoral Council meeting. They were approved at our
May 1, 2017, meeting. There wasn’t a meeting during Lent, with Holy Week and Easter.
What is a Parish Leader? Why do we need them? A Parish Leader is a professional minister appointed by the bishop with the
responsibility of leading a parish community that does not have a resident priest. A priest will be assigned as a canonical pastor and
for sacramental celebrations at the parish. In response to the Pastoral Plan for Evangelization, the Diocese of Youngstown is train-
ing 14 individuals (deacons, religious, and laity) who will be available to serve as Parish Leaders. This is one way the diocese is
addressing the reality of fewer priests. It is an opportunity for faith filled men and women to use their gifts of leadership and ad-
ministration, allowing priests to focus on the sacramental and pastoral care of the faithful. For more information, visit www.doy.org
or contact Pete Schafer, Director of the Office of Evangelization and Pastoral Planning, at 330-744-8457 ext. 289. There is an insert
provided to answer questions you may have.
May God bless all of us!
Fr. Mike

“And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ…” ACTS 2:38
The word “repent” means to turn from sin, to change our actions.
When it comes to change, do we take responsibility for change or do
we think that others have to change instead? Change that is perma-
nent comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined.
Remember though that we are not alone, Jesus is there to help lighten
the load.

Salata Family Barn Fundraiser Saturday, May 20, 2017
On Sunday March 19, 2017, the barn at the Salata family
farm caught fire due to a heat lamp left on for their two baby
goats that were the children’s 4H youth development projects.
Firefighters quickly arrived to the scene, but the family’s late
1800’s barn was fully engulfed in flames and was completely
destroyed and collapsed in a matter of minutes. Sadly, all of
their animals were lost as well as all of their equipment used to
maintain the property.
The family and friends of Justin Salata are having a bene-
fit to help raise money to rebuild and replace their barn and
some of the animals and equipment lost in the tragic fire. The
benefit will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, 343 N. Main St.,
on Saturday, May 20, 2017, from 5:00– 9:00 p.m. The menu
will consist of pasta and meatballs, salad, bread and dessert.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. In
addition to dinner, there will be a 50/50 raffle, basket raffle
and bake sale. Dinner tickets can be purchased in advance by
contacting Nicole at 330-506-4123 or Trish at 330-565-0933.
To donate to the basket raffle or if you would like to contribute
by providing supplies that can be used at the fundraiser or to
help the family with the rebuild process, contact Wendy at 330
-883-1212 or Kristen at 330-774-9251. Auction items can be
dropped off at St. Patrick’s Parish House (225 N. Main St.).
This is a not-for-profit event. Proceeds will be deposited
into the Salata Family Barn Fundraiser fund at Huntington
National Bank to assist the family in the rebuilding and resto-
ration of their farm. If you would like to donate you may visit
any Huntington Bank location!
