Who is Saint Patrick?
There are many legends surrounding Saint Patrick, so it is hard to know what is true.
It is said that he was born in Scotland towards the end of the 4th century AD. His real name was Maewyn Succat, taking on the name Patrick when he became a priest.
He had a normal life growing up in Britain, until, as a teenager, Patrick and some other boys were captured by pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland.
Purchased by a land owner, Patrick worked herding and tending sheep for six years. During this time, he turned to God in prayer.
One night he had a dream in which he believed God was telling him to leave Ireland by going to the coast where he would find a ship waiting to sail to Britain.

After his escape, he spent time travelling in Europe before heading to France where he studied to become a priest and later a bishop. After 12 years of study, changing his name, he had another dream.
In this dream, he that he should return to Ireland to tell the Irish people about God. As a result of this dream, he returned to Ireland and set about traveling and preaching the Gospel, converting many in the process. With help, he began building churches all over the country.
Patrick spent 40 years preaching and converting many in Ireland. It is believed he died on the 17th March, 460 which is why Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated on this day.

The Shamrock
The shamrock is a clover plant with a yellow flower. It’s leaflets are made up of a stem with three small green leaves. This plant is
widely spread throughout Ireland.
It is said that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity when he was converting the Irish. He explained how the
three leaves are part of the one plant, and how the three Persons; Father, Son and
Holy Spirit, are part of one Supreme Being.

The Reek
Every year thousands of pilgrims climb to the peak of Croagh Patrick, nicknamed The
Reek, to pay homage to Saint Patrick’s mission.
Legend says that this was the place that Patrick rang his bell to scare the snakes of Ireland away, though it is now thought that
Ireland never had snakes.
