Called To Be Agents of God’s Love in The World Through the Eucharist, Family & Community
Page 2 Fourth Sunday of Lent Dear Friends in Christ,
At the wake of this Corona virus we offer prayers for protection and safety for all, healing for those affected and eternal repose for those who have gone to their rest. The Lord is our help. We must also act responsibly by keeping safe distance and following sanitizing tips recommended by experts. Remember to also avoid non-essential gatherings.
Please look at our bulletin and our website at www.StPatrickMcHenry.org and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stpatrickmchenry for the list of recommendations from the Diocese of Rockford. You will find Bishop Malloy’s letter, list of canceled activities, safety tips as well as means of participation either online or in person to the limited activities allowed. We would also like to ask for those who want to volunteer to assist seniors and other vulnerable people with their needs within
these difficult times. Those who need any assistance may call the parish office at 815-385-0025 and we will be happy to provide what is possible.
Imagine for one moment that you have never seen the light and all the beautiful things around us. That is the story of the Man born blind in today’s Gospel reading, (John 9:1-41). We should be grateful for sight as a wonderful gift that ena-bles us to see and navigate our ways. In addition, we should be mostly thankful for inner vision, that is, the gift of faith, by which we can discern greater things. Jesus restores the Man in the Gospel not only to his physical but also to his inner vision of faith. With the physical sight he can see temporal things but with the inner vision he recognizes Jesus as the Lord and Savior who has come into the world.
Inner vision permeates today’s celebration. The first reading takes us back to about 1000 years before Christ when the Prophet Samuel had to choose one of the sons of Jesse for a king over Israel. They all possessed physical characteris-tics as potential kings. But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not judge from appearance…not as man sees does God see...Man looks at appearances (physical) but God also looks at the heart.” We all need to pray for inner vision to see things the way that God does. If not, the temporal and physical alone can derail our sense of judgments and darken our spiritual vision. There are many things that may seem acceptable and plausible to our world, cultures and customs but are in direct contrast to God’s ways. It is possible to be deceived unless one has the inner and spiritual vision. To this end, St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that we have been enlightened by Christ.
Jesus who illumines the vision of all, opens the eyes of the Man born blind physically but more so he opens his heart and inner vision. In contrast to the leaders who claimed to see but remained blinded by pride and arrogance this man’s faith envisions and recognizes Jesus to be the Savior. Let us pray that our Lenten journey should open our hearts and our inner vision so we can recognize Jesus in our Prayer, Fasting and charitable deeds.
In Christ,
Father Godwin

Some Frequently Asked Questions and Answers from the Diocese of Rockford
What is a Dispensation from Mass? A dispensation from the diocesan Bishop releases Catholics from fulfilling their Sunday obligation (Mass). During this time of pandemic, the public celebration of all weekend and weekday Masses has been suspended. Even though it may be a spiritual sadness for you not to participate in Mass, you should not feel guilty. Catholics are encouraged to offer up their hardship, sickness or pastoral care for the sake of those who are seriously ill and for those who have died.
What should I do?
Catholics are encouraged to make a ‘spiritual communion’. St. John Paul II writes that “it is good to cultivate in our hearts a constant desire for the sacrament of the Eucharist. This was the origin of the practice of ‘spiritual communion’, which has happily been established in the Church for centuries and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life. Saint Teresa of Jesus wrote: ‘When you do not receive communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed on you.’” (Ecclesia Eucharistia, no. 34) Resources to make your spiritual communion are printed below. How Do I Make a Spiritual Communion? Below are recommendations for how to make a ‘spiritual communion’ when unable to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The recommendations can be adapted based upon personal and family needs.
∗ Gather with others in your household and begin a time of prayer with the sign of the cross. ∗ Take time to read and reflect upon the readings from Sunday Mass. You can find the readings at usccb.org
and a Sunday Gospel reflection on our YouTube channel. Watch a livestream or taped copy of St. Patrick weekend Masses at: www.stpatrickmchenry.org
∗ Share prayer intentions quietly or aloud. ∗ Pray the Lord’s Prayer. ∗ Pray one of the following prayers of spiritual communion.
Anima Christi Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, embolden me. Water from the side of Christ, wash me. Passion of Christ, strengthen me. O good Jesus, hear me. Within thy wounds hide me. Never permit me to be parted from you. From the evil Enemy defend me. In the hour of my death call me. and bid me come to thee, that with your saints I may praise thee for age upon age. Amen. Prayer to our Lord Jesus Christ Crucified Behold, O good and loving Jesus, that I cast myself on my knees before you and, with the greatest fervor of spirit, I pray and beseech you to instill into my heart ardent sentiments of faith, hope and charity, with true repentance for my sins and a most firm purpose of amendment. With deep affection and sorrow I ponder intimately and contemplate in my mind your five wounds, having before my eyes what the prophet David had already put in your mouth about yourself, O good Jesus: They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones (Ps. 21: 17-18).
∗ Close with the sign of the cross.

Any funds remaining will be used throughout the liturgical year to beautify the church sanctuary.
For centuries, March 25 has been celebrated by Catholics as the “Feast of the An-nunciation.” Mary’s fiat—“I am the servant of the Lord, Let it be done to me as you say”—brought our Savior into the world. As the first disciple of Christ, Mary shows us that we must listen to and do God’s will. Prayer and action therefore go hand in hand. As followers of Christ we must make time to talk to and listen to Him in prayer. Examining all that we do, or simply “living” in the light of our prayer, is essential. Living with a heart open to God’s will has enormous implications. Different people will realize that God calls them to different things. For an adolescent, it may mean resisting peer pressure to take part in drinking or unchaste activity. For the single adult, it could require offering personal time in service of a needy person. A business-man may find that honest and fairness requires a certain course of action. A married couple could realize that they should have another child. A frightened pregnant woman may understand that she needs to ask for help to resist the temptation of abortion. The sick person might have to accept his illness and join his suffering to that of Christ. Doing God’s will is not always easy. We usually have our own plans for our lives. It is
good to have plans, but never at the expense of our growth in relationship to God. Like Mary, we must trust that God’s will is the best for us and our world. Let us follow the example of Mary and call upon her to help us open our hearts to say “yes” to God! The Annunciation According to the Gospel of Luke (1:26-38) In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. . . . for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

St. Vincent de Paul recently assisted a sin-gle working mother who had fallen behind on her rent and was in danger of being evicted. Arriving with bags of food and gift
certificates to Aldi’s and Angelo’s, Vincen-tians ensured that this young family would not
go hungry. Support was provided for the rent along with a referral to the Township for additional assistance. SVdP appreciates your donations to the parish Poor Box. This month, we also appreciate donations of laundry deter-gent. John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Music Ministry - Pianist/Organist Needed
Do you play the piano? We are in need of a pianist/organist who would be willing to accompany a song leader at approximately 1-2 Masses a month, or be on call as a
substitute. Our hope is that there is someone here from our wonderful parish who is willing to donate their time and talent. Training will be provided.
Please prayerfully consider this opportunity and contact Cecilia Adams, Music Director at 815-385-0025 or [email protected] for more information.
Word of Life
“There is an everyday heroism, made up of gestures of shar-ing, big or small, which build up an authentic culture of life… Part of this daily heroism is also the silent but effective and eloquent witness of all those ‘brave mothers who devote themselves to their own family without reserve, who suffer in giving birth to their children and who are ready to make any effort, to face any sacrifice, in order to pass on to them the best of themselves’… We thank you, heroic mothers, for your invincible love! We thank you for your intrepid trust in God and his love. We thank you for the sacrifice of your life.” (The Gospel of Life 86)
