Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23, 2015

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2015

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2,6-8

Moses tells the people to always observe the statutes God has given them, without adding or subtracting from these laws. He reminds them that the law is just, and that any nation who heard their statutes would consider them a wise nation.

Second Reading: James 1:17-18,21b-22,27

James discusses the gifts that God has given to all people and implores them to respond by welcoming the words of truth that can save them. He emphasizes that through good deeds and pure conduct, our faith in God is proven to him.

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8,14-15,21-23

The Pharisees observed some of Jesus’ disciples eating without first purifying their hands and ask the disciples why they are going against their ancestor's traditions. Jesus responds that nothing from the outside can make a person impure. The only true evil, acts such as fornication, murder, and greed among others, come from within and make a person impure.

RCIA is for anyone who wants to learn more about their faith,

those who want to become Catholic, those who want to try to

understand the teachings of the Catholic Church or those who

simply want to deepen their faith if they are already Catholic.

Breathing New Life for Josh

For 12 years the Fernandez family has struggled to provide the best care for their son Josh. After years of declining health it was

determined that new lungs were Josh’s only hope. The St. Patrick community has walked beside them through this difficult journey.

Hope was provided, prayers were answered and Josh underwent a successful lung transplant this past June.

Below is a letter of thanks from the Fernandez family to the entire parish for the support they have received.

Dear St. Patrick’s Families and Faculty:

As summer is coming to an end, I felt the necessity of writing to all of you, sooner than what I thought it was ok to do it. I

write on behalf of my husband Olman and my kids Mathew, Christian and Joshua. I want to thank everyone for the wonderful support

we have received during several years from the famililes and staff at St. Patrick’s; you have been our strength. I thought I was alone

in this, but all of you have given us a great support, with delicious meals, gift cards, presents for my kids, prayers, words of courage.

You stepped up and made sure we could move to a nice house that was clean, beautifully painted, and in great shape. Thank to all

of you for making this possible, for giving your precious time. We love our house and all of you made it beautiful for us to live here.

To all of the wonderful families that cooked so many delicious meals to feed us, what a great support! This was so appreciated in

times when I was needed more as a mom, nurse and a doctor than a cook. Or when I was away for doctor visits with my son and I

didn’t have to worry about my other kids and husband being fed, thank you so much for taking your time in planning a meal. I want to

thank all of you that have supported “Breathing New Life for Josh”. There are many necessities that this fundraiser will provide for,

that we were not been able to manage before. As a mom I had to make the difficult choice to either work full time, or take care of the

necessities of my child, and I didn’t have to think twice about what I needed to do, thank you all for your support! I want to thank every

single person that has been there for our family with all their heart. I would love to mention every name of every person that in any

way has helped us. I think of all you wonderful people that have given so much to my family without expecting anything back from us.

You are the true meaning of God’s love who gave everything for us without expecting anything in return.

But the least I can do, is to let you know that with all my heart I appreciate and value all that you have done for us. Our summer has

been wonderful, I’m a blessed mom to have my Joshua alive; he’s running, swimming, riding his bike, dancing, and laughing. He’s

doing so many things he wasn’t able to do before. I’ve been busy having family time, enjoying every single second of my son’s life.

We’ve been trying to have a little ‘just us’ time… time to rejoice, time to appreciate life. But, I want all of you to know that even in this

wonderful time that we are enjoying, all of you are always in our minds. Without your support, none of this would be possible and

without my God that has been there with us taking care of us my Joshua won’t be here today.

Thank you my angels. You are angels that God sent to take care of us. Thank you, for making this hard time much easier

for us. Your continued prayers are much appreciated as Joshua needs to stay healthy.

Thank you again and may God bless all of you abundantly.

Sincerely,

Claudia Solorzano-Fernandez

the end of the second year. For more information and to register,

please visit the St. Pat’s Youth Ministry (SPYM) page on our

website.

FAITH FORMATION

Volunteers Needed! Teens Needed!

Volunteers are needed to help with our Faith Formation K-8

Program especially a catechist/co-catechist for grade 2

session I and grade 6 session II. Classroom Assistants, Bud-

dies and Safety Monitors are needed in sessions I & IV. Teens

can volunteer as a classroom assistant or as a buddy. Buddies

are assigned a child with special needs so they can be success-

ful in class. It is a rewarding experience for both the child and

teen. Teens in high school as well as those in 7th or 8th grade

who do not attend Faith Formation classes are welcome to vol-

unteer. Please contact Ginny at [email protected] or

973-635-0625 for more information.

A few of our catechists wanted to share their thoughts and

experiences about the joys of serving and sharing their

faith with our children. Look for one or two reflections in

the bulletin each week!

Teaching religious education with Doug has been an enriching experience. It has not only brought us closer -- literally -- but also spiritually. As we prepare for our class lessons, we engage in thought-provoking discussions about our faith and beliefs that we might not otherwise do on a day-to-day basis. -Sandi & Doug Ahrens I am your typical, over-extended Chatham mom that has never been a teacher nor had ever envisioned herself as a classroom teacher. I had reservations about my knowledge of our Catholic faith and my ability to effectively educate our children. Howev-er, in working with Ginny Salvatore and the incredible catechist community at St. Patrick, my insecurities have vanished. The resources and support available to catechists are unlim-ited. Ginny is a wealth of knowledge and fresh ideas; she is committed to seeing the success of all her teachers and stu-dents. -Eileen Ruggiero

lowing NEW items are needed:

Subject dividers (set of 8)

2 pocket folders

Marble composition books

Meditation Group: 7 pm; Church

THIS WEEK AT THE PARISH

What is the purpose of the different prayers

at the opening of the Mass?

In the beginning, the prayers move from the Gathering Rite to

Introductory Rite. These rites, serve to introduce and prepare

the gathered assembly for the Liturgy of the Word and the

Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though intimately linked to one an-

other, the Gathering Rite and the Introductory Rite serve two dis-

tinct emotional and liturgical needs of the gathered assembly.

In the Gathering Rite, the assembly is greeted with hospitality and

welcome, enabling the barriers of individuality and isolation to be

overcome. The Gathering Rite has an ‘informal’ tone to it and may

be understood as more 'secular’ in nature. The Introductory Rite

begins with the Entrance Procession. The Introductory Rite serves

to move the assembly into an awareness of the sacred. The lan-

guage used in the Introductory Rite conveys that a new moment

has begun in the liturgy and calls the gathered community out of

the ‘secular’ and ‘ordinary’ into a time and space that is ‘sacred’

and ‘extra-ordinary’. The major elements of the Introductory Rite

are the presider’s greeting, the Collect, and the assembly’s re-

sponse.

Prayer for Those Suffering Religious Persecution

Good and gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered

Violence and death for the salvation of the world,

Listen graciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for

their faith.

In your great mercy, comfort them with the Holy Spirit.

Give them strength in the face of hostility and courage in the

face of trial.

Open the eyes of those who raise their hands in violence to see

others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father

of all.

By your grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love.

Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of

Peace, may justice and peace prevail

So that all may have the freedom to worship you, the one true
