WELCOME TO THE HOME OF ST. PATRICK FESTIVALARMAGH & DOWN | STEALING A MARCH
The Home of St. Patrick Festival is narrated through walks, talks, bells, drums, processions, music, art... a genuine experience in his rightful home.
Welcome to Counties Armagh and Down, the natural home of St. Patrick. The City of Armagh is the Ecclesiastical Capital of Ireland with its two magnificent St. Patrick’s Cathedrals sitting aloft two of Armagh’s seven hills. In County Down, St. Patrick made a barn into his first church at Saul. Downpatrick is his burial place and also the location of the only centre in the world dedicated to telling his story.
Patrick the man and his achievements are the central inspiration for the 17 day long festival which begins on 3rd March 2017 and encompasses three weekends. The number 17 is a central tenet offering an additional 17 special events that fall into three themed weekends: Pre-Christian: Myths & Legends (March 3rd-5th) celebrating First Peoples and cultures reflecting a time and place that St. Patrick would have encountered before his Christian ministry began; Spiritual Journeys (March 10th-12th) focusing on the spiritual
world-wide; and Contemporary Celebrations (March 16th-19th) involving the traditional St. Patrick religious ceremonies, processions and family entertainment.
St. Patrick’s life has strong contemporary echoes: he was a refugee, a slave, an outsider, a peacemaker and a uniter of people. Our 17 special events respond to these values and bring a spiritual theme across a range of art forms to be performed exclusively for the Festival by a range of international artists.
A new project is our Seven Hills Spiritual Citiesinitiative, in which we are linking with another city which, like Armagh, is also built onseven hills; Istanbul. Working with the Istanbul Biennial for a good neighbour project, a performance by The Secret Ensemble Sufi musicians of Turkey and Iran, and the world-acclaimed Turkish writer Elif Shafak who will give the inaugural ‘Saul Address’.

The Mourne Mountains would have been familiar terrain to Patrick and in this special festival event, in the company of local expert guide, and poet Moya Cannon, walkers have the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Mournes for themselves. The guide will give an insight into this special landscape whilst Moya has curated an artistic journey involving different art forms for the walk (a painting, a musical excerpt, a reading, etc.), chosen for their spiritual qualities and for the particular pleasure of experiencing them in the heart of the Mournes.
Moya Cannon has published five collections of poetry, her most recent being Keats Lives (2015) from Carcanet Press. Her poems reflect preoccupations with landscape and seascape, with archaeology, with music, with language itself and with our visceral attachment to the beauty of the earth. The work sings of deep connections - the impulse to ritual and pattern that, across centuries, defines us as human, a web of interdependences that continue to sustain the ‘gratuitous beauty’ of our endangered earth.
Packed lunch will be provided. Please allow 5 hours for this experience. This is an outdoor walking event. Please dress accordingly and wear walking shoes.

Concerning their curatorial concept of a good neighbour, the Artistic Directors of the 2017 Istanbul Biennial, Elmgreen & Dragset, have stated:
‘a good neighbour will deal with multiple notions of home: home defined as a territory where values and behavioural routines are generated through daily experience; and a place from which a feeling of belonging - of ‘rootedness’ - emerges. By investigating diverse lifestyles associated with private spaces, and the ways that we as inhabitants seek to optimise and customise our domestic domain, the exhibition will look to the ways that home can serve as an indicator of various identities, and how it has functioned throughout history as a vehicle for self-expression.’

a good neighbour is an artistic billboard installation project being hosted in collaboration with the Istanbul Biennial across the festival area.
The 15th Istanbul Biennial, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset and entitled a good neighbour, launches an international billboard project. The project will present various photographs with captions posing different questions on being a good neighbour. The Home of St. Patrick Festival is one of the international partners, collaborating with the Biennial, launching the project in Armagh, Downpatrick and Newry.

I’m the sun in the yellow, the sea in the blue and the sky in the light-blue, I’m fire in the red... and I turn red when I get excited! I’m a bright street; I’m a feast. Oh... I’m dark! And you can’t see me anymore! But you can listen to me breathe...I don’t speak, but I open and close my eyes. I have no feet, no hands and no legs, but I can follow you while you walk...I am Spot and I tell stories. ‘Spot’ is a very particular stage light. Its light shines and expresses itself by drawing shapes and colours on the floor. Simple words come along with the actors’ action, looking for a unity of image made of lights sounds and movements. Spot is recommended for ages 1-4 years.

Visit the four holy wells at Struell Wells on the Saint Patrick’s Trail this spring and you can do much more than quench your thirst.
You see, it’s thought that the wells have healing powers – curing all sorts of ailments, especially eye problems. The wells are one of the 15 key Christian Heritage Sites on the trail, all of which have a historical connection to Ireland’s favourite saint.
In fact, legend has it that Saint Patrick used to bathe here, standing in the water singing psalms and spiritual songs.
Takes singing in the shower to a whole new level, eh?
