Pastor’s CornerPastor’s CornerPastor’s Corner Rincón del PastorRincón del PastorRincón del Pastor Welcome to the First Sunday of Lent. I pray that this special season will be a time of grace for all of you. Today’s Gospel speaks to us about Jesus’ temptation in the dessert. We are all plagued with temptations. If you are on a diet, your temptations may be to pour more chocolate syrup on your ice cream. If you struggle with personal discipline your temptation may be to yield to sinful actions. From 1952 to 1957 at a time when television was re-placing radio, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen burst into the liv-ing rooms of America with his “Life is Worth Living” program. Bishop Sheen was a sensation, somewhat like Pope Francis is today. Bishop Sheen gave us this helpful thought on tempta-tion: “Why is it that any time we speak of temptation we always speak of temptation as something that inclines us to wrong. We have more temptations to become good than we do to become bad.” Temptation. Even the word itself is alluring, glamor-ous, enticing. And that is because , if there is one thing you and I understand about life, it’s the reality of being tempted. Whether it’s’ our diets or our struggles with greed or vengeance, we’ve all experienced temptation. This is possibly why the story of Jesus being tempted has always been compelling. At its core, it is essentially a battle story, a contest between the two great monumental forces of good and evil. Jesus, on a purely human level, is being tested to see if, unlike the ancient Israelites who flunked the test, can remain utterly faithful to Abba, his father. The test is essentially the very same one that we all have to pass if we are to assume a position of power in our own lives whether as a husband or wife, a parent, a son or daughter or a leader of any kind. This Lent we too are being tested as Jesus was. The test given Jesus and to us is threefold: • Jesus is asked to deny who he truly is: the Son of God. Will we claim our identity as God’s very own, acknowledging our true identity as human beings who are made in the image of God? • Jesus is told that he can be the source of great signs and wonders. Will we forsake our desire for fame and adula-tion, and instead live a life of humility focused on ser-vice? • Jesus is told that he will be given all the power and glory of the world’s kingdoms. Will we be able to resist the power inherent in greed, lust, vengeance and all the glamour the world offers? Temptations are powerfully seductive and alluring. In the example of Jesus, we are invited to resist them as Je-sus did. On this First Sunday of Lent, our Gospel chal-lenges us to do the same. Among the central themes of this season is the recognition that we all have to do battle against temptation - especially the temptations to misuse power. Lent invites us to go into our own wilderness for forty days to pray, fast, become contrite and increase our service to others - all of this testing to know what was in your heart, and remind us once again: “The Lord, your God shall you worship and him alone shall you serve”(Dt 8:2). I remind you that during Lent two special events are happening each week - Stations of the Cross on Fridays (6:00pm in English and 7:00pm in Spanish). Also, on Fridays the “Fish Fry” Dinners in the Hall from 5pm to 7pm. All are welcome to either or both events. See you there. Father Michael Rocha

Padre Michael Rocha

Lenten Guidelines Ash Wednesday is a Day of Fast and Abstinence. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (Fasting - one major meal and two smaller snacks during the day). In addition, all Catholics 14 years of age and older are asked to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Regardless of age, if you are able, it would be good to join those obliged to follow the abstention from meat as a sign of unity. For special health concerns always seek out your doctor’s advice.

New Lectors Wanted Has God blessed you with a good speaking voice? Have you been looking for a way to use that special blessing? Would you like to share your gift with our parish community? Our parish is in need of more individuals to serve as Lectors at our Sunday Masses and other special occasions. Lectors have the honor of proclaiming (reading aloud) the scriptures during our liturgies. Training will be provided. If you feel you have the talent and gift to participate in this ministry then St. Paschal’s needs you! Please call our Lector Coordinator, Tom O’Neill, at 805-300-4250 and he can answer all your questions.

Did You Know? Transportation safety is key. The safety of your children is often entrusted to other drivers – bus drivers, family members, friends’ parents, coaches – and parents should be aware of who is in charge of transportation. Although you cannot control everything, you can teach your children how to ride in another person’s vehicle. Teach kids to always wear seatbelts, and avoid distracting behavior that will take the driver’s attention away from the road. Ask your school about their policies and the requirements for those who may be in charge of transportation. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Child Care Providers Urged to Check Vehicle Safety, Train-ing, and Health of Drivers,” contact [email protected] or (213) 637-7227.

Dear Parents,

As Lent begins, the religious education office hopes our families will take ad-vantage of some of the offerings that are available for your faith journey. Friday fish frys in the SPB hall from 5-7 pm: We strongly encourage our

religious ed families to attend the fish frys, perhaps grab a table to sit together and get to know one another better, then continue your evening with Stations of the Cross in the church at 6pm in English and 7pm in Spanish. The many programs available via email to guide you in your Lenten journey. Two that I particularly like are Matthew Kelly / Dynamic Catholic’s “Best Lent Ever”, found at http://dynamiccatholic.com/bestlentever/, and Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire Lent Reflections, at http://www.lentreflections.com/. I highly recommend subscribing to one of these, or any other program that you find to your liking. You can see what’s avail-able by googling “daily Lent reflections”. There are also reflec-tions available in Spanish. You may find this to be a helpful way to structure your devotions during Lent. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or just need some ideas or advice for your faith journey, please contact Jennifer by phone or email. We wish you all a very blessed Lenten sea-son.

Parish Ministry Announcements

Dear SPB Parishioners, Last Wednesday, March 1st, was Ash Wednesday and marked the start of Lent.

At 10:30am that day our parish school coordinated a beauti-ful liturgical service (without Mass) and distributed ashes. Lent is a very special liturgical season for Catholics in general and our parish school in particular, as it is a time of preparation: we are preparing ourselves for the Resur-rection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Pope Francis has written, “God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn.” We need to place a particular focus on the concept of mercy and compassion toward others during Lent, by performing Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy during the Lenten Season. We work on encouraging these critical Christian concepts throughout the academic year at SPBS. However, we emphasize them during Lent to our students and entire school community. The Pope continues in his writings, “…these Works of Mercy remind us that faith finds expression in concrete eve-ryday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit by: feeding, visiting, comforting, and instructing them. On such things we will be judged.” We are called to reach-out in mercy and love to others – especially during the season of Lent. We are literally the “hands of Christ” here on earth - what a sacred trust. We are Catholic Christians: we are a “Resurrection Peo-ple”. As we prepare ourselves during Lent for the resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, the teachers and staff members at Saint Paschal Baylon School will help prepare our students as well. In addition, our SPBS Second Grade students are getting ready to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation this Tuesday, March 7th, and they are very excited! At our parish school we work hard to convey this important message of Pope Francis to our students, i.e. “God’s mercy transforms human hearts”. At SPBS we will be modeling and emphasizing to our students during Lent how to truly live the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mer-cy. As Catholic educators our goal is to help form and trans-form students into merciful, loving Disciples of Christ, while we prepare for the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Please join the school community at our student-centered Stations of the Cross, in the Church on selected Friday after-noons throughout Lent.

“God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn.” Pope Francis

Bulletin Submission Deadline

NOTE: Effective immediately, all bulletin submissions are to be e-mailed to [email protected] by end of business day on the Monday prior to the Sunday Bulletin.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in various forms of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Some people suggest that this recovers an ancient tradition in the church, when in fact the practice belongs to a later time. The custom of showing the consecrated host to the people, encased in a vessel called a monstrance, developed in a period of history when even very pious people received Communion only rarely. The opportunity to see the host raised high above the head of the priest at Mass, or to see the host exposed outside of Mass, was thought by many to be a form of spiritual Communion. Without question, our Catholic practice of reserving the consecrated host both for adoration and Communion of the sick and dying is a cherished tradition. Over the next few weeks, we’ll look at how these traditions developed and how the Church envisions reservation and adoration today. We do this by the light of the liturgical reforms that have restored a heightened appreciation for how receiving the Body and Blood of Christ is central to our worship. “Perpetual Adoration,” “Reservation,” “Benediction,” and “Reposition” are all part of the Catholic vocabulary. Often the terms are misused, and a tangled his-tory—as well as widely varying practices in our parishes—adds to the confusion. Many Catholics today have never par-ticipated in Benediction, or even spent time in adoration on Holy Thursday night. There’s plenty of interesting history, much of it surprising and challenging, and we will do our best to inform you along the way. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION

The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As be-lievers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic ministry which works with the poor, the homeless, and the disenfranchised people of its community. Here at St. Paschal Baylon our St. Vincent de Paul keeps a pantry open from 10 am to

12 pm Monday through Friday. Although we are mainly a food pantry, we also assist with bills for utilities, rent or gas. Our clients do not have to belong to the Parish but they must be from the Conejo Valley. We work with other Societies of SVDP to maximize our assistance.

We rely on our parishioners for food through donations through Project Response, drop-offs at the back of the church and other ministries who do collections during the year.

Pope Francis tells us to live our Faith with the Corporal Works of Mercy. Through the ministry of SVDP we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the needy, and help with housing. Come join us! The re-wards are great! We are in need of volunteers to assist us in our works of mercy. Time commitment is one shift at the pantry every other week and if possible bi-monthly meetings. Please call Cathy Hines (805-341-3026) or Sandy Elias (805-405-2586) if you have any questions.

PROJECT RESPONSE

Together, St. Paschal parishioners have donated over ONE MILLION DOLLARS through PROJECT RESPONSE to help those in need in our community.

Having said this, we are in a crisis situation. It takes about 150 people donating about 3 hours, 3 times a year to keep our program active. Our program is in jeopardy as we are in need of about 30 people.

If you can help, Call Dave Lavendier 805-557-9963 or Cathy Hines 805-499-6277
