Farewell to Fr. John Gribowich!

Bishop DiMarzio has assigned Fr. John Gribowich to Ministry with DeSales Media Group, Inc., and to

residence at the Parish of St. Charles Borromeo, Brooklyn. Fr. John G has been with us at St. Nick’s

about three years as it was his first assignment.

In this short period of time he proved to be an honest, humble and a responsible priest who loves his peo-

ple and is always willing to serve them especially in those who are sick and the poor. As a good teacher

he generously contributed to the Faith Formation Classes and to the SNT Catholic Academy. Please join

me in thanking Fr. John on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 12:15 PM Mass. After the Mass there will be a

light refreshment in the Tolentine Hall.

Fr. John G, you touched our Parish family in so many ways. We will surely miss you and your ministry.

We wish you good luck for your new assignment and pray for your fruitful ministry in the Diocese of

Brooklyn.

We welcome Fr. Thomas P. Joseph CMI, who has been assigned by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio to St.

Nicholas of Tolentine as a parochial vicar. Fr. Thomas was born in Kerala, India, and was ordained to

the priesthood in 2011. The priests, deacons, sisters and parishioners join me in welcoming Fr. Thomas

Joseph to his new home and his new parish family. I know that he is a kind and dedicated priests who

will strengthen us by his priestly ministry.

Fr. Anthony Rosado is on medical leave for the last six weeks and we hope to see him in April. Pray for

him and for all the priests. Finally, we welcome Fr. Saint Martin Estiverne who is on medical leave

and will be staying with us in the residence for three months.

Reconciliation Monday Please take time for the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. On Monday, March 26th all Catholic

parishes in our area will be celebrating Reconciliation Monday, offering the opportunity through the day

to celebrate the sacrament. Here at St. Nick’s we have set aside additional time for Reconciliation from

3 P.M to 9 P.M. It’s a great way to prepare for Easter, as we open our hearts more and more to the love

of God. Confession can be heard in English, Spanish, Creole, Malayalam, Hindi and Urdu.

In today’s Gospel it is also interesting to see that some Greeks ask Philip (one of the twelve Apostles of

Jesus), "Sir, we would like to see Jesus." This is just a wonderful request- to see Jesus and learn more

about his teaching. Lent is a sacred opportunity for us to grow deeper in our Christian faith and see the

face of Jesus in other people.

Our Lord says, Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies it remains just a grain of wheat;

but if it dies, it produces much fruit” (Jn 12:24). Jesus describes his approaching death on the Cross as

his “hour of glory” (Jn 12:23). Death leads to life. Dying to self is necessary to receive new life. Lent is a

special time to say "yes" to God’s will and to reject whatever is contrary to his loving plan for our lives.

God bless you!

Fr. John Francis

Fifth Sunday of lent

This Sunday we will celebrate the Third Scrutiny for the two adults who will be baptized, confirmed, and receive Holy Communion for the first time during the Easter Vigil. During the three Scrutinies, we thank God for the good found in our candidates and pray that they be healed of their weaknesses, all in preparation for their receiving the fullness of Christ’s life in them through baptism. The Gospel of each of these weeks during the 10:45 Mass is taken from Cycle A readings as listed in the missalette because these Gospels speak of three of the baptismal symbols. The Gospel of the Samaritan Woman gave us the baptismal symbol of water; last week’s Gospel of the man born blind gave us the baptismal symbol of light. Upon being baptized each candidate will be given a bap-tismal candle which has been lit from the Paschal Candle. And this Sunday the Gospel is that of the raising of Laza-rus. This Gospel gives us the baptismal symbol of new life. Just as the baptism of Jesus pointed to the future sac-rament of baptism, so the raising of Lazarus pointed to the resurrection of Jesus, through which we participate in the new life that Jesus’ death and resurrection made possible for us. Please continue to pray for them and all of our candidates who are preparing to receive Confirmation and Holy Communion.

God bless you!

Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation
