From the Pastor’s Desk….

Happy Feast Day to All!

Today we celebrate our Parish Feast at 12:15 PM Mass. Saint Nicholas of Tolentine was born in the village of Sant’Angelo in Pontano, Italy in the year 1245. He professed his religious vows at the age of sixteen, a few years after the foundation of a new order, that of Hermits of St. Augustine. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1271. After serving briefly in Cingoli and other houses of his Order, he went to Tolentino and remained there for the rest of his life.

It was on September 10, 1305 that Nicholas died in Tolentino. In 1446, Pope Eugene IV proclaimed Nicholas a Saint and “Protector of the Universal Church.” St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of the Souls in Purgatory.

A fellow religious describes Nicholas’ ministry in these words; “He was a joy to those who were sad, a consola-tion to the suffering, peace to those at variance, refreshment to those who toiled, support for the poor, and a heal-ing balm for prisoners.”

As we are preparing the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of this great Parish, today’s feast will officially be-gin the centennial celebrations. We pray that following the example of our patron Saint, our parishioners may con-tinue to grow in faith, love and service of God and one another.

Catechetical Sunday

This year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday this weekend (on September 18, 2016) and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry at the 10: 45AM Mass. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful op-portunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.

Here at St. Nick’s I am blessed with wonderful priests, sisters, teachers, catechists, instructors and volunteers who are committed to serve this parish family with their teaching and good example. With them may all of us serve our parish and each other as we “teach” God’s grace with our lives. Let us use the coming year to reflect on the words of St. Francis de Sales, who says that “every one of us needs half an hour of prayer each day except when we’re busy –then we need an hour.”

In closing I want to thank The Light of Christ Prayer Community for celebrating the dinner and dance on Sep-tember 10th for the World Peace. It was a nice touching way of remembering and praying for all the victims of 9/11.

God bless you

Fr. John Francis

On behalf of all our priests, deacons and staff.

We wish you all a very Happy Feast Day!

Fr. John Francis

ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY

In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Commu-nicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was pur-chased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversi-fied community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work. September 18, 2016: Parish Feast and Anniversary Opening Liturgy (12:15 Mass, Church & Tolentine Hall October 23, 2016: Ministry Fair (after the Saturday 5:00pm Mass and the 7:30am, 9:15am, 10:45am and 12:15pm Masses).
