From the Pastor’s Desk….
“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. (Jn 15: 9)
In John’s Gospel, after washing his disciples’ feet, Jesus had a long dialogue with his disciples
which is known as a “farewell discourse” (Chapter 13-17). The love manifested in the Gospel
and the resurrection of Christ creates an entirely new relationship between God and humanity.
Jesus speaks of the love of God as the bonding agent of the new Israel. He says that the model
of love for the faithful disciple is “to love one another as I have loved you” (Jn 15:12). Christ
did not only give us this commandment; He also showed us how to love unconditionally and im-
measurably. Christ lived and died for us. Following His example, we, too, should spend our lives
in service to others. Just as Christ brought peace and healing in the lives of those he encountered,
we too are called to be His instrument of peace and healing to those around us. Indeed, Christ re-
vealed how God loves each and every one of us as a parent loves his children. Filled with God's
love and following Christ's mandate, we, in turn, should love each other as brothers and sisters.
The Ascension of the Lord
The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, a holy day of obligation, is on Thursday,
May 10, 2018. We confess in the creed: Jesus ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father.” Jesus’ Ascension is both an ending and a beginning. The physical appear-
ances of Jesus are at an end; his revelation of the “good news” is complete; the promise of the
Messiah is fulfilled. Now begins the work of the disciples to teach what they have learned and
share what they have witnessed. May God help us continue His life-giving mission!
First Communion This Saturday, May 12, 2018, about 66 of our young children will receive the gift of the Holy
Communion for the first time. On this day they are deepening their own friendship with Jesus.
Jesus is the bread of life who satisfies our hunger. May these children always know how much
God loves them! They will know this as their parents take seriously the promise they made at
their child’s baptism….to keep them coming and united to Jesus, The Vine. They will know this
as they see us celebrate the sacraments with them and give witness to our own faith in the Risen
Christ.
God bless you,
Fr. John Francis

Sixth Sunday of EAster
Our children preparing for First Holy Communion on Saturday, May 12th, at 10:00 am are growing in excite-ment and anticipation. Please pray for them and their families. Today we are beginning the registration for the new year of Faith Formation 2018-2019. Without a doubt we expect all the children to re-register who have been in their first year of preparing to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion and those preparing to receive Confirmation. In my reflections with you today, I desire deeply to share my concern for all the children who have received Holy Communion in the past and have not returned to class, simply waiting for 7th grade to return to prepare for Confirmation in 2019. In many of Bishop DiMarzio’s communications with pastors, Directors of Faith For-mation and all those involved in the catechetical min-istry, he emphatically challenges us to find a way to bring all of these children to continue their faith for-mation. My dear parents, what the children learn in their preparation for First Holy Communion is ex-tremely minimal. There is so much to learn about God, about our faith etc. What is more, handing on the faith to our children also includes the formation of their character etc. The knowledge of our faith and the living of our faith entail a gradual growth which surely implies on-going formation, year after year. No parent would ever think of terminating their child’s education in math and reading, let us say in 2nd grade and return to it in 7th grade. Here at St. Nicho-las of Tolentine we are doubling our efforts to remove any possible obstacle to this continued faith forma-tion. Therefore, for all the children who do return af-ter First Communion, the tuition will just be $25 to cover the cost of a book. And we are giving two op-tions: 1) the child may come as usual on Sunday at 8:45 am and then go to Mass with all of us at 10:45 OR the child will come on Saturday at 3:30 pm and then go with me to Mass at 5:00pm. All of these chil-dren will be called “Followers of Jesus”. We have many plans to do our best to make these classes very special for them. However, we turn to you, parents. Personally, I sincerely admire the efforts and great sacrifices that parents make to give their child a great variety of opportunities over and above the required daily course of studies. May I sincerely invite all par-ents to reflect on making it possible to make your child’s growth in the knowledge and living of their faith as #1priority, then all else will follow.
God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director of Faith Formation
Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Director de Formación de Fe
