What’s Happening on Sunday

9:15 amConfirmation class, via Zoom video conference call

What is Lent?If Epiphany is looking outward, Lent is that healthy season of looking inward at the heart. Lent is a six week period of preparation for Easter Day. The name derives from Old English Lenten, meaning Spring. So from Ash Wednesday to Easter there are a total of 40 workdays recalling the forty days of Jesus fasting in the wilderness after his baptism. Lent therefore is a time of self:• Auditing• Penitence• Denial

Today’s SermonJesus Lives, Jesus Heals, Jesus Saves, and Jesus LovesPreacher: The Rector

The storm is raging, people are glued to their phones for the latest news alerts, anxiety is as high as it ever has been. Last week during our Theology Over Coffee study, we discussed the following question: “Can you imagine a culture that was as wary of the consequence of unchecked sin as it was the consequence of an unchecked Coronavirus?” Jesus has much to say on this matter and as we see in Romans and Matthew, there is a relationship between our spiritual and physical healing. Stay Tuned.

Welcome to St. Michael’sWe are so glad you are here. If you have received Christian Baptism and are spiritually prepared to make your Communion, we invite you to share with us at the Lord’s Table today. Please fill out the blue Connect card, and place it in the offering plate.

• Prayer Ministry is available in the front northeast and southeast pews during communion and after the 10:30 am service. (The service may be found in the red Book of Common Prayer (BCP) beginning on p. 355.)

Processional Hymn, all standing Lift High the Cross Hymn 473

Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim Till all the world adore his sacred Name.

1. Led on their way by this triumphant sign, The hosts of God in conquering ranks combine. Refrain

2. Each newborn servant of the Crucified Bears on the brow the seal of him who died. Refrain

3. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, As thou hast promised, draw the world to thee. Refrain

4. So shall our song of triumph ever be: Praise to the Crucified for victory. Refrain

Opening Sentence You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8

Officiant Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.People His mercy endures for ever.

Officiant Hear the commandments of God to his people: The Commandments define and form the boundary lines of love. Each week of Lent, we will focus our attention on a portion of God’s Commandments to his people.

Officiant You shall not commit murder.People Amen. Lord, have mercy.

Officiant You shall not commit adultery.People Amen. Lord, have mercy.

Summary of LawOfficiant Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord

our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The liturgy begins with the Acclamation, which is an “eager expression” of praise.

The Commandments serve as God’s outline for and protective borders of love.

#6: No Murder: Out of the heart comes thought. Thoughts generally extend to outward actions. Jesus always went to the root, the source, the heart of the matter. Murder was not death as a result of war or the outcome of a legal process. The motivation for murder originates in the heart as a hatred and malice that would prefer extinction over healing. Murder by nature bypasses justice and fuels in God’s community the cancer of escalating revenge.

#7: No Adultery: The primary image of humanity healed and complete is marriage, the union of male and female actively united with and by God in His love. In the Bible this is absolutely central to understanding the dynamic of being made in the image of our One Three Personed God; The Trinity; The Three In One. Adultery murders the hope for and vision of proper intimacy at a deeper level. Adultery has a self-centered motivation which, like murder, bypasses appropriate avenues for seeking healing and justice in relationships. And does violence against the very fabric of human and divine relationships in general.

Song of Praise Kyrie (Willan)

Confession

Officiant Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

(Silence to reflect on those you have hurt or those who have hurt you.)Officiant and people

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The AbsolutionOfficiant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through

our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

In the Confession of Sin and Absolution, our sins, both individual and corporate, have been confessed, and we have been powerfully reassured of God’s complete forgiveness through Jesus Christ. In Morning Prayer we begin with a cleansing admission and confession of sin followed by an authoritative pronouncement of God’s forgiveness in Christ Jesus. This is always “ground zero” for Christians. We move out from here.

- 5 - Transforming Hearts Through Jesus Christ

Collect of the Day BCP p. 218Officiant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Officiant Let us pray.People Amen.

The Lesson: Romans 5:12-21 (seated) Bible p. 942After the Reading, the Reader says The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 23, standing, in unison 1 The LORD is my shepherd; * I shall not want.2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures* he leadeth me beside the still waters.3 He restoreth my soul * he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:* thou anointest my head with oil, and my cup runneth over.6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Song, standing A Mighty Fortress is Our God Hymn 688

1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his Name, from age to age the same, And he must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us; We will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us; The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo! His doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.

Collect means collecting our thoughts for prayer.

The Scriptures teach that much of our spiritual renewal is by the washing of the Word of God, which cleanses our minds and purifies our hearts.

Apostles’ Creed Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Officiant Kneeling, let us pray.

Prayers (Suffrages)

Officiant Show us your mercy, O Lord;People And grant us your salvation.Officiant Clothe your ministers with righteousness;People Let your people sing with joy.Officiant Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;People For only in you can we live in safety.Officiant Lord, keep this nation under your care;People And guide us in the way of justice and truth.Officiant Let your way be known upon earth;People Your saving health among all nations.

The Apostles’ Creed: This is he basic and essential structure of the Christian faith. Every word is packed with meaning. Once the Gospel is given this is the response made by the community who have chosen to trust the truth of what God has revealed about Himself through His Son in the power of His Holy Spirit. Catholic simply means universal, not necessarily the Roman Catholic Church.

The Lord’s Prayer: like the Creed this prayer given to us by our Lord is designed to “cover all the bases”. It is the basic and essential structure of a complete prayer life.

About The Suffrages: The word “suffrage” is another word for “petition” or “an asking.” It comes from the Latin word from which we get the word “to vote.” Each suffrage is based on different words from the Scriptures Pss 85, 20, 132, 28, 122, 51, respectively. Again, notice that the vast majority of everything we say from the Prayer Book is composed of phrases that are taken directly out of the Bible.

About the Collects: Collects are short prayers constructed in a particular form designed to “collect” the thoughts of our hearts around a particular theme. Some of them are fairly contemporary and many of them have been constructed by some of the most notable saints and teachers throughout the history of the Church.

A Word About our Prayers of the People and our 4 H’s You may have noticed we pray for Hearts and Homes, The Holy City, The Hurting Coast and the Hungering World. What do they mean?

Officiant Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;People Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.Officiant Create in us clean hearts, O God;People And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Leader Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are sovereign and in control of all things. We pray that you would destroy the Coronavirus and heal your people. As you heal us physically, please heal us spiritually through conversion and the forgiveness of our sins. Help each of us to be as passionate about our spiritual and eternal life as our health and physical life.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Let us pray for continued blessing on our mission at Saint Michael’s Church of transforming hearts in the Home, the Holy City, the Hurting Coast and the Hungering World. Hear us, O Lord.

People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Let us pray for the Lord to fill our hearts with a burning zeal to share the Gospel with our families, our neighbors and our communities, so that souls would be won for the Kingdom.

Hear us, O Lord. People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader Jesus, you tell us throughout Scripture to ‘Fear Not’, and Psalm 62.8 reminds us to “Trust God my friends, and always tell him each of your concerns. God is our place of safety.” When we look around us and see people losing jobs and others experiencing loneliness and isolation, it is easy to allow chaos and adversity to take our eyes off of you! Please redirect the gaze of our minds and our hearts to you. Send your Holy Spirit to cleanse, renew, and restore all those whose health and faith have been challenged.

Hear us, O Lord. People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader We pray for those serving in the armed forces, law enforcement and first responders of our country that they may be defended by your grace and strengthened in times of trial and peril.

Hear us, O Lord. People Lord, hear our prayer.

Leader O Lord Jesus Christ, we most humbly ask you to comfort and relieve (names of those who are sick), and all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

And we also bless your holy Name for all your servants departed this life in your faith and fear... Silence...asking you to grant them continual growth in your love and service, and to grant us grace to follow the good examples of all your saints, that with them we may be partakers of your heavenly Kingdom.

People Lord Christ, for your Cross of forgiveness we bless you; in your resurrection life we acclaim you; and by your gift of the Holy Spirit we serve you. Amen

Heart and Home - All hearts and

homes in St. Michael’s Church from

the cradle to the grave!

Holy City - Urban ministries in

Charleston.

Hurting Coast - From Richmond,

VA to Maine, where Christian faith is

in decline in this country.

Hungering World - To people-

groups who have little or no access

to the Gospel of Jesus in Burundi;

Durgapur, India; Samburu, Kenya;

and other regions of the 10/40

Window (the area extending from

l0 degrees to 40 degrees north of the

Equator, from North Africa east

to China.)

About The Prayers: If God knows everything what’s the point of prayer? Clearly prayer is not about “informing God” of anything. In short, prayer is a way of saying “yes, Lord, I want to develop a relationship with you, receive your life, share my life.”

About the “posture” of prayer: It has been commonly said that Anglicans kneel for prayer, but that is not the rule for posture in any edition of the Prayer Book. Various editions have assumed that standing is the normal posture for public prayer and have directed the people to kneel only for confessions, for reciting the Commandments, etc.. However, in this parish it is the traditional discipline to kneel for the prayers contained in the services of Morning and Evening Prayer. It is a posture of humility, which is something always worth cultivating in us.

The General ThanksgivingAll Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not

only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

The Peace, All standOfficiant The peace of the Lord be always with you.People And also with you.

Then the Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The Peace is a particularly good time to welcome visitors and newcomers. Please take a moment to extend God’s peace to those around you. That peace, which the world cannot give, comes only through the forgiving of Jesus Christ. This peace is not rooted in our circumstances but in the presence, promise, and power of God and Christ’s redeeming work.

The Blessing

Closing Hymn God of Grace and God of Glory Hymn 594

1. God of grace and God of glory, On thy people pour thy power; Crown thine ancient Church’s story; Bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour.

2. Lo! the hosts of evil round us Scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! From the fears that long have bound us Free our hearts to faith and praise; Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, For the living of these days, for the living of these days.

3. Cure thy children’s warring madness, Bend our pride to thy control; Shame our wanton, selfish gladness, Rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal, lest we miss thy kingdom’s goal.

4. Save us from weak resignation To the evils we deplore; Let the gift of thy salvation Be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, Serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore.

The DismissalCelebrant Let us go forth into the world to transform hearts...People through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Are You Called to Leadership?Participants at a recent Wardens' Conference

adopted the following Diocesan guidelines

for vestry nominations. The guidelines were

written by the Rev. Richard Belser several years

ago and have been endorsed by the Vestry of St.

Michael's.

1. Have you believed in Jesus Christ as

the Son of God, acknowledged him as

your Savior, and accepted him as the

Lord of your life?

2. Are you committed, as God enables

you, to worship him with your parish

family every week?

3. Are you involved in, or actively

seeking, some form of ministry by

which you will give your time and

talents in or through your church?

4. Are you working to maintain or

develop your personal devotional life

through regular prayer and study and

through periodic gatherings with a

small group of other Christians for

fellowship, study and prayer?

5. Are you and your family committed

to trusting God with a pledge of your

anticipated income, with the tithe

(10%) as the standard?

6. Are you prepared (or will you learn)

to seek opportunities to explain your

faith describing in appropriate ways

God's action in Jesus Christ and his

work in your life?

7. Do you accept the responsibility of

demonstrating your faith through

your living, maintaining a good

reputation and manifesting the fruit

of the Spirit in such ways that Christ

is glorified?

8. Are you willing to serve as an "elder"

of your congregation, seeking only

God's will for his Church, and

giving attention to the spiritual

life of the congregation as well as

to the financial and administrative

decisions?

9. Are you willing to support parish

functions — social and spiritual —

with your work and attendance,

placing parish activities high on your

list of priorities?

10. Are you committed, as God enables

you, to attend every meeting of the

vestry, to participate in the annual

retreat, and to pray daily for your

parish?
