GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

When we were baptized, we were baptized into Christ’s
death. Take a moment to ponder these profound words.
We were baptized into death. In every sense of the word,
we are asked to die. This is not just about our final death
but about daily deaths due to inconvenience, discomfort,
pain, loss, or others’ needs. This is an incredible epipha-
ny given the way we very often approach our lives. We
do everything to avoid death, let alone encounter it!
Many avoid pain, discomfort, inconvenience, uneasi-
ness, change, interference, and suffering of any kind.
We put a lot of energy into finding the easiest and least
inconvenient way through many things. Even holding
the door open for a stranger or saying hello to someone
in the store can be major undertakings.

We are called to die. One of the biggest wakeup calls
we can have is realizing that life is not about us! There
are millions of other people sharing life on this planet
with whom I have a relationship. Does my life celebrate
those relationships? The most distracting question we
can ask is, “What do I want to do?” The more focused,
faithfilled question is, “What do I need to do?” What I
need to do may not be what I want to do. However, ask-
ing this question more frequently will teach us how to
more purposefully and intentionally live so we can be a
life giving vessel for others. When we learn to live more
sacrificially, to put the needs of others before our own,
and to not always seek our own selfinterest, we become
aware of what baptism into Christ’s death is really all
about. These are the roots of virtue and the seedbed for
justice, tolerance, solidarity, love, and peace.

Learning how to accept all the “small deaths” and sacri-
fices life calls us to teaches us how to approach our final
death. All deaths ask us to empty ourselves into some-
thing or someone else. Whether we empty ourselves into
the heart and soul of another human being or empty our-
selves into God at the moment of our final death, new
life is always received and nurtured. A heart that exclu-
sively seeks its own interest is a heart that is closed to
love. A heart that pours itself out to others and is content
with being emptied is a heart that has been touched by
and open to mercy. It is a heart that overflows with joy.

What gets in the way of our relationship with God,
Our Lord or Mary our Blessed Mother? When we
love someone we do all that we can to strengthen
and make that relationship stronger, with two
people there is plenty of give and take and
compromise. It is often hard work. In growing
closer to Our Lord it is often hard work. What
things get in the way of receiving his love and
mercy and forgiveness. We may find it hard to
forgive someone who hurt us, we may find it hard
to say I’m sorry to someone. We may have envy,
pride, jealousy, hurt feelings that close us off to the
healing grace of God for us. Seeds fall into the
ground and die in order to become something
beautiful. Maybe something has to die within us to
become the special people God made us to be.

That love God gives to us is also meant to be shared
with others around us. It is hard but it is worth it,
we all need what we can give to others especially
now when so much seems to be working against us.

2020 Respect Life Theme
CHRIST OUR HOPE IN EVERY SEASON OF LIFE
“You who are my messenger, in you I place my absolute trust”.
Our Lady of Guadalupe

Think about praying for an unborn baby and their families. Every day
4000 babies are killed by abortion. They have so little protection only the
hand of God can end this. Prayer is the best weapon to help them…the
most effective. Say this prayer for nine months to save a baby’s life.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare
the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is
in danger of abortion.
.BEING PROLIFE is:
believing that a baby's life is a gift that should be cherished.
believing that a mother is a precious human life with value
and dignity.
believing that all human life belongs only to the Creator who
gave us life.
believing that all life is God's to give and take .

“That’s why I think that abortion has become the greatest
destroyer of peace today because it destroys the life of the child,
but also destroys the conscience of the mother also, and for years
and years, she knows that she has murdered her own child,”
Mother Teresa

Pregnant? Need Help? The United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops is declaring a year of service
called “Walking with Moms in Need.” This is the
mission of the Roman Catholic Diocese of
Providence’s special ministry called “St. Gabriel’s
Call.” The Diocese has seven locations that reach out
to help moms, families and babies during and beyond
pregnancy. Our help is free and confidential.

For Respect Life news and events in the area and
diocese, please check out the ministry’s Facebook
page at St. Mary’s Respect Life Ministry, the Respect
life table at the back of the churches and ministry

5. Singing will be limited.
Raising your voice in song, unfortunately, creates
more aerosolized particles, and an increased risk of
possible COVID19 infection. Hymnals will be
removed from churches for the time being.
6. Holy Communion will be given in a safe manner.
While priests or ministers will continue to wear masks
while distributing communion, parishioners can
remove them. Parishioners are also encouraged to
receive Holy Communion on the hand rather than by
mouth or to refrain from Holy Communion
altogether and make an act of spiritual communion
instead.
7. The church will be sanitized before every Mass.
8. “Passing the basket” will be suspended; budget
envelopes will be submitted to a secure receptacle
before or after Mass.
9. Parishioners are asked to avoid personal
contact with anyone. The sign of peace will be
suspended for the time being.

Those who are sick, even with mild symptoms, must
stay home.
The diocese said the guidelines were created based
upon suggestions from the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops. They were also written after
several weeks of consultation with the Rhode Island
Department of Health and the office of Governor Gina
Raimondo.

location. Seating is limited so please understand if an
usher tells you we are "full up". We will continue to
stream masses and that is a practice we will continue
from now on.
This is a massive undertaking and we need help. We
need ushers, people to volunteer to livestream each
