Ascension of the Lord May 8, 2016

Dear Friends,

History of the Ascension of Our Lord The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed; that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Fa-ther almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead."

Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The Feast of the Ascension marks the begin-ning of the first novena, or nine days of pray-er. Before His Ascension, Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which begins on what was formerly, Ascension Thursday, ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later.

Today, we recall that first novena by praying the Novena to the Holy Spirit between Ascension and Pentecost, asking for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. (Copies of the Novena are on the Altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

THIS WEEKEND’S Second Collection SUPPORTS the enhancement of our Catechetical and Faith For-

mation Programs both in the Diocese and in our Parish. Please be as generous as you are able and thank you in advance for your generosity and support!

PRAY for the Men Ordained to the Permanent Diaconate this weekend at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral by Bishop Richard Lennon. Permanent Deacons are called to Service in the Diocese of Cleveland in Liturgy and Service, by Word and Sacrament. Pray for them this weekend.

Looking Ahead: The SECOND In-Pew Appeal for the Annual Catholic Charities will be taken up on the weekend of May 22nd. It is an opportunity for those who weren’t able to make a contri-bution in February. This is a second request for your financial support to meet the Diocesan Goal. Please be generous in your response.

Thank you for your very faithful support in the Sunday Collections! The Finance Council is appreciative of everyone’s efforts to financially SUPPORT the Parish. The Council is working diligently on preparing the BUDGET for next year and your faithfulness and even your increase in your weekly contributions would be MOST beneficial to the overall healthy financial picture of St. Mary’s! THANK YOU for your prayerful and sacri-ficial support AGAIN and AGAIN!

Bulletin Prayer List

“As He blessed them He left them and was taken up to heaven” (Lk 24:51). Jesus makes it “easy” To make it easy for us to really love God, really be holy, Jesus again and again and again said the same thing: “Love one another as I have loved you.” When we look at the Cross we know how much He loved us. When we look at the Tabernacle we know how much He loves us now. And to make it, again I say, “easy” for us, He says, “Whatever you do to the least of My brethren, you do it to Me.” “I was hungry; I was naked; I was homeless…” Excerpted from: Tape recording of Mother Teresa speaking to Co-Workers of Mother Teresa, San Francisco, June 19, 1986.

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

THE ASCENSION

This weekend is technically the 7th Sunday of Easter, but we are celebrating the Ascension of the Lord. Why is this? In the olden days, the Ascension was set 40 days after Easter Sunday, to reflect the 40 days mentioned in the Acts of the Apostle. This happens to land on a Thursday. In more modern times, the reformed Liturgy guidelines has recom-mended celebrating certain feast days, such as the Ascension, on the following Sunday, so that more people will be able to attend. Only 6 out of 32 diocese providences in the United States still celebrate the Ascension on Thursday.

This Sunday is also Mother’s Day, so thank you to mothers of all kinds, living and deceased!

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also has rehearsals on Tuesdays at 6.pm. Contemporary Choir meets to rehearse on the first and third Thursday of every month at 7.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument dur-ing mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft. Call the music ministry office for more infor-mation: 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Family Perspectives

Motherhood . . . the miracle of creation! God’s mercy is present in motherhood, in their joys and in their sorrows. When mothering is inadequate, God fills the gap. From the peak moment of childbirth, through the tedious daily tasks, God is actively participating in the process of motherhood. Celebrate mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers and godmothers today!

Bible Study Bible Study meets in the chapel on each Tuesday at 11:00am and again at 7:00pm. 1 Corinthians continues to waken us to the wonder of our Christian faith. Bring your Bible and come to see what God might want you to see in these writings.

Quiet Prayer

Quiet prayer will meet in the chapel at 12:20pm. We will begin with Lectio Divina of sacred scripture and then move into Quiet Prayer. We will still have you ready to be on your way by 1:00pm. Why not come to see if this practice might benefit you on your spiritual journey.

2nd Collection

The Sec-ond Grade students spent April 29th, on a First Communion Retreat at the Father Garrity Center. This full day retreat con-cluded their preparation for the Sacrament as they made un-leavened bread, created crafts, and visited the church. Attention all grandparents of a St. Mary’s School stu-dent, mark your calendars. You are invited to Grandpar-ents Day at St. Mary’s School on Friday, May 27, 2016. The Annual 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Ca-thedral of St. John the Evangelist. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the principal celebrant. Reserva-tions are now being accepted for couples married 50 years (married in 1966). Couples who are cele-brating other significant anniversaries (55 or over) or have missed previous celebrations are welcome to register and attend. Seating is limited in the Cathedral. The number of guests will be determined

by the seating capacity and total number registered. All registrations should be handled through parish secretaries. Registration forms were sent to all parishes in March; couples should contact their parishes to register.

50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration

For over 55 years the Sterba family has coordinated the effort to decorate the graves of US war veterans buried at Holy Cross Cemetery. Each year, a small army of family, friends and vol-unteers spread throughout Holy Cross to place an ever increasing amount of

flags on veteran’s graves (approx. 15,200 this year). Please consider joining us this May for a rewarding ex-perience. This is a great way for high school students to obtain community service hours. The 2016 date is Thursday May 26th. We start at 11:00am and go until finished (or dusk). Our registration table will be located behind the lake by Section 10, which is very close to the Brookpark Road entrance. Please let me know if you plan on attending this year.
