Learning and Living Our Catholic FaithMy dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I pray your summer is going well! Via seeing folks in person and on Facebook I see many of the flock are enjoying summer vacation and are blessed to be able to travel or to "staycate" and relax at home a little bit with family. What a joy it is to have a little time to rest and recuperate and enjoy God's creation together!

I was blessed to travel last weekend to Denver, CO to attend and concelebrate the priestly ordination of Fr Rafael Solorio OMV (see cover and collage) and also to concelebrate his First Mass on Sunday at Holy Ghost Church, our OMV parish in Denver, where I myself was stationed for 5 years.

Both Masses and the celebrations that accompanied them were pure and holy joy! The Masses were prayerfully well-attended and many OMV's that have been here at St Mary's were there, including Fr Jim Walther, Fr John Paul Klein, Fr Chris Uhl, Fr Tom Cannon, Fr Dave Yankauskas, Fr Jerry Joaquin and Fr Andy Huhtanen. Deacon Paul Kallal who will be ordained a priest here at St Mary's next year on June 20, was also there. It was a moment of tremendous joy and grace for us OMV's, Fr Rafael's family, Holy Ghost Parish and in reality for the whole world!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) teaches us regarding Catholic Priests that "The ministerial or hierarchical priesthood of bishops and priests, and the common priesthood of all the faithful participate, "each in its own proper way, in the one priesthood of Christ." While being "ordered one to another," they differ essentially. In what sense? While the common priesthood of the faithful is exercised by the unfolding of baptismal grace - a life of faith, hope, and charity, a life according to the Spirit - ,the ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. It is directed at the unfolding of the baptismal grace of all Christians. The ministerial priesthood is a means by which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. For this reason it is transmitted by its own sacrament, the sacrament of Holy Orders." (CCC 1547)

"Through the sacrament of Holy Orders priests share in the universal dimensions of the mission that Christ entrusted to the apostles. The spiritual gift they have received in ordination prepares them, not for a limited and restricted mission, "but for the fullest, in fact the universal mission of salvation 'to the end of the earth,"' "prepared in spirit to preach the Gospel everywhere."" (CCC 1565)

""It is in the Eucharistic cult or in the Eucharistic assembly of the faithful (synaxis) that they exercise in a supreme degree their sacred office; there, acting in the person of Christ and proclaiming his mystery, they unite the votive offerings of the faithful to the sacrifice of Christ their head, and in the sacrifice of the Mass they make present again and apply, until the coming of the Lord, the unique sacrifice of the New Testament, that namely of Christ offering himself once for all a spotless victim to the Father." From this unique sacrifice their whole priestly ministry draws its strength." (CCC 1566)

We give thanks to God for our Baptism, by which we became children of God and sharers in the common priesthood of Jesus Christ, enabling us all to offer ourselves as pure and pleasing sacrifices to the Father through Jesus in the Holy Spirit. We give thanks to God too, that he has called and calls men to lay down their lives as ordained priests, that configured to Jesus by the Sacrament of Holy Orders and acting thereby in the person of Christ, we are able to frequently have the Sacraments of Confession, Eucharist and anointing of the sick.

May the good Lord, Mother Mary and Venerable Fr Bruno Lanteri bless Fr Rafael! May God continue to call humble and holy men to serve holy Mother Church! Please pray for Fr Rafael, Deacon Paul, and all religious, priests, and seminarians, and in a particular way all OMV's!

God bless you! - Fr Jeremy OMV

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEFocus: Striking balance in our spiritual journey

is a great challenge. The attributes of both Martha and Mary are to be admired and imitated. By sitting at the feet of Jesus, we learn to accept the challenge to be of service to others. Christ remains the one to imitate in our daily interactions with others.

In the first reading, Abraham gladly welcomes three strangers into his home. Saint Paul reminds us that it is always Jesus Christ we proclaim. In the Gospel, Martha and Mary welcome Jesus into their home in different ways.

ARE YOU GOING ON VACATION?Many of our Parish families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many wonderful memories.

To find a Church and Mass times while away from home, please visit

www.masstimes.org.

We have many spots still open for your family to take Mary home with you. This is a great opportunity to pray together as a family and to pray for vocations. Sign-up sheets are available in the back of Church and you can also call the Parish Office (618) 465-4284 to reserve your spot.

A Noble Knight of GodThis modern take on the story of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, often called “the saint of second chances,” is an incisive and thrilling look at the life of the real man behind the legend.

Humanae Vitae 50 Years Later: A History of Dissent and Defense

Janet Smith, Ph.D. a seminary professor and internationally-known author and speaker, provides important context for why Humanae Vitae is considered the most controversial, and one of the most important, encyclicals promulgated by the Church in modern times. She discusses how this document written by Blessed Pope Paul VI served to prophetically warn the world of the dire consequences associated with artificial contraception and faithfully witness to the beauty of God’s plan for sex within marriage.Dr. Smith is so clear on what she is speaking of and made sense of fifty years of controversy in a short period of time. I loved it! Eric - Omaha, NE
