Welcome

Weekly Lenten Giving sponsored by the Office of Faith Formation and the Canton Catholic Women’s Club The Season of Lent invites us to be more intentional about where we spend our money and our time. As we participate in the liturgies of Lent, let us reflect on the Gospel message and our daily prayer which will enhance our spiritual growth in the service of others as individuals and as members of the Canton Catholic Community. Below is a list of the requested items to be collected each week as part of our Lenten Giving program for various organizations in need. Baskets will be available at the doors of both churches. Second Weekend of Lent

On the second weekend of Lent, March 8, we will be col-lecting items for the St. Francis House in Boston. St. Francis House rebuilds lives by providing refuge and pathways to stability for adults experiencing homelessness and poverty. Items needed: Tee-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, belts, and hats. Adult sizes only.

May Institute serves individuals across the lifespan with

autism, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, neurological disorders, and behavior disorders to promote independence, choice, dignity, and respect. Items needed: Gift cards of any amount to Amazon, Target or Walmart – Gift cards can be placed in the collection basket marked to the attention of Nancy Cunniff.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Nancy Cunniff at [email protected]

March 1 ~ First Sunday of Lent

Humility is not false modesty, but the awareness of who we are: Sons and daughters of God, created by God. Yet we, like Adam and Eve, are often tempted to think of ourselves as more than creatures, as in control of the world. May God give us the grace to allow him to be God.

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is the First Sunday in Lent. In an increasing-ly busy world and with the prevalent use of technology, large portions of a day can seemingly fly by. The Lenten Season’s traditional devotions of prayer, fasting and alms-giving are not intended to burden us but instead are op-portunities to remind us of Lent and of the particular aspects of our spirituality on which we wish to focus. Not surprisingly, as do the circumstances of our lives, they often vary from year to year. What do you think will help you this year? Check out the various programs and devotions our parishes are offering this Lent. Maybe you are drawn to daily Mass here or near your work. Perhaps there is a volunteer opportunity you’ve been considering. Each Friday evening, Deacon Dan will be leading the Stations of the Cross at St. Gerard’s. Also this weekend, after Masses, we will have volunteers in the vestibules with laptops to demonstrate how to sign up for online giving or to answer any questions you may have. Many parishioners report how much easier it is to give online versus envelopes. Obviously, from the parish perspective, it saves a lot of time and effort counting col-lections and preparing deposits. Thank you to all who have done so already or are considering it.

Peace,

Father Tom

CANTON CATHOLIC WOMEN'S CLUB BOUTIQUE AND RAFFLE

All are invited to the Canton Catholic Women's Club boutique and raffle fundraiser. This year our boutique will be held on Saturday, March 14 beginning at 11:00 a.m. in St. John's lower church. There will be raffle baskets, jewelry, crafts, books, bake sale for St. Patrick's Day and boutique tables. Items to donate can be dropped off in the lower church. No religious items, books, statues, pictures at this time are needed. If you are bringing a pot luck dish, there will be a sign up sheet near the donations baskets. Parishioners from Canton Catholic Community plus friends and family are invited to attend. A free pot luck lunch will be available at noon. See you March 14th! Thank you, CCWC Chairwomen.

Give Thanks with the Examen Prayer The Ignatian Examen begins with thanks to God for all that we have and are. We might begin with the greater things like faith in Christ and life itself and then thank God for the concrete graces of the day. We can live “always and everywhere giving thanks to God” (Ephesians 5:20). Look carefully at all we need to thank God for. Some of his gifts are given to all of us: We live in plenty. Most of us pray and worship in peace. Some of God’s gifts are deeply person-al—good parents, a good marriage, faithful friends. These are all gifts from God that we may appreciate too little. Some of our gifts are so much a part of everyday life that we do not think of them as gifts. Who thanks God for everyday things like drinkable water in every faucet? For trustworthy supermar-kets? For a web of highways? We can thank God for these things too. And then there are the greatest gifts: our “firm hope” of living with Christ forever in our own flesh. Our confidence that God cares for me, personally. Our amazing gift of the Eucharist. We are grateful to a loving God. Grateful that our loving God remains present in the gifts he gives. Grateful that God is always acting to care and provide for us. Grateful that God the Son, Jesus Christ, came to us and remains with us, God-with-us. As we grow in gratitude, we grow more willing to let go of our attachments to things that hold us back. This Lent is good time to reflect on these attachments and ask our Lord Jesus to free us from them.

RCIA RITE OF SENDING AND

ELECTION The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which adults and older children become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. This includes those who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized in another Christian faith, and adults who were baptized Catholic but did not receive formal instruction in the faith or the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

The full RCIA process consists of four stages marked by the celebrations of three major rites with the parish community. They are Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry), Catechumenate, Purification and Enlightenment, and Mystagogia.

Currently, the catechumens (un-baptized) and candidates (baptized) are entering the third stage where they celebrate the Rite of Sending and the Rite of Election.

At the 4:00 Mass this weekend, we will celebrate the “Rite of Sending for the Call to Continuing Conversion” with our baptized candidate, Peter.

The Church has discerned his readiness for the completion of his initiation sacraments at the Easter Vigil this year. On Sunday afternoon, Peter and his Sponsor, Maria will go to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross along with members of our Collaborative’s RCIA Team to stand before the Archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, for the Rite of Election. Based on the testimony given by his sponsor, the RCIA Team, and the community’s support of his readiness for the Sacraments, the Cardinal will recognize the desire for the him and the other baptized candidates from the Archdiocese of Boston to receive the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist within the Catholic community at the Easter Vigil.

Please continue to keep Peter, his sponsor Maria, and their family in your prayers.

To learn more about the RCIA process, please contact Nancy T. Cunniff at [email protected] or Deacon Dan Nelson at [email protected]

our Church and every gift to the Appeal makes an important dif-

ference in the lives of so many. If you would like more infor-
