In continuation of the discussion of the seventh
commandment from the Catechism of the
Catholic Church, we come to the topic of social
teaching of the Church and our obligations to the
good of the human person, especially the needs of
the poor. Some of the principles are as follows: Any
system in which social relationships are determined
entirely by economic factors is contrary to the nature
of the human person. In other words there is more to
us than owning property and satisfying material
needs. A theory that makes profit the only norm and
ultimate end of human activity is morally
unacceptable. As St. Paul writes, “the love of money
is the root of all evil” (1 Tim. 6:10). “Every practice
that reduces persons to nothing more than a means of
profit enslaves man, leads to idolizing money, and
contributes to the spread of atheism. The Church
has rejected the totalitarian and atheistic ideologies
associated in modern times with ‘communism’ or
‘socialism’. She has likewise refused to accept, in
the practice of ‘capitalism,’ individualism and the
absolute primacy of the law of marketplace over
human labor. Reasonable regulation of the
marketplace and economic initiatives, in keeping
with a just hierarchy of values and a view to the
common good, is to be commended.” (CCC 2425).
The purpose of economic activity is not just to
increase profit or power, but is first directed to the
service of all persons, and to the common good of
the entire human community.
Human work is our participation in the creation that
God does, since we are made in the image of God.
Hence work is a duty, “If any one will not work, let
him not eat” (2 Thes. 3:10). Work can be a means of
sanctification by which we provide for others and
daily take up our cross as called to by Christ.
Everyone should make legitimate use of his or her
talents to contribute to the good of all and has a right
to harvest the just fruits of his or her labor. (see
Catechism, 2419-2429).
In next week’s gospel, Matthew 5:17-37, we have
a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus
refers to the Commandments and then gives his
teaching on how to fulfill them from the heart. “You
have heard, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills
will be liable to judgment’ but I say to you, whoever
is angry with his brother will be liable to
judgment… you have heard, ‘You shall not commit
adultery’, but I say to you everyone who looks at a
woman with lust has already committed adultery
with her in his heart….you have heard ‘Do not take a
false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you
vow’, but I say to you, do not swear at all.” These
are the fifth, sixth and eighth commandments, and
Jesus shows us what is at the root of these
commandments. When someone is murdered it
begins with anger and hatred in the heart. When
adultery is committed it begins with desire and lust
in the heart, when there is a false oath, it begins in
the heart with an intent to deceive. We pray for a
purification of our hearts, that we can allow the Holy
Spirit to guide our thoughts, our memories, our
understanding. St. Ignatius of Loyola has a great
prayer for this called the Suscipe:
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory,
my understanding, and my entire will, All I have and
call my own. You have given it all to me. To you,
Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what
you will. Give me only your love and your grace,
that is enough for me.
God Bless you,
Fr. Andrew Beerman

The legalization of Physician assisted suicide (PAS) has been
gaining ground in the U.S., and there will be a bill proposed in
the Minnesota legislature this year to legalize it. We know that
we are called to defend the dignity of life from conception to
natural death. But, we may not know that included in our faith
is a treasure of the art of dying well. We ask you to resist the
fear tactics of the proponents of PAS and embrace the call to
genuine compassion and friendship. Over each of the next
seven weeks you’ll see a bulletin article debunking PAS claims
and offering Catholic Christian hope and wisdom.
If you have questions, you are encouraged to speak to your
pastor about the personal and societal challenge of PAS.
Catholic Church statements and video witnesses are available
at www.usccb.org/toliveeachday.
Physician Assisted Suicide myth: Look, I’m dying
anyway. Why not end the process before it gets even
harder?
Truth: God has a purpose for your life. His son Jesus Christ
died for you, to open to you a path to the Father. But you
have been given a mission. God has rich possibilities for
your life, even on your deathbed, that you do not know—but
He does. Do not shut out the Lord’s possibilities for your
life. He will grace you in the difficulties and we will not
abandon you. Dying is difficult, but it is also sacred ground.
If you intentionally and with full knowledge end your life,
you shut God out.
Catholic compassion: Dying can be hard, but we can help.
For centuries, the Christian faith has helped people die well.
Request the sacramental of anointing of the sick early in the
process for the grace of peace. Pray and request prayer.
Forgive friends and family. Ask for help. We have millions
of witnesses of people who have died well and with peace.
We can’t promise it won’t be hard, but we can promise you
will not be alone and God is with you.

Confirmation Faith Sharing Centers Evaluation Our Confirmation candidates and a parent or sponsor participated in Faith Sharing Centers last Wednesday. There are seven different centers focusing on the Sacrament of Confirmation. The candidates were asked to evaluate the centers when they were done. Here are some of their responses: I realized . . . How important Confirmation is, how good everything about God is, that there are a lot of Gifts of the Holy Spirit, I already know a lot, that Confirmation is part of my lifelong journey of faith, that I have a lot to learn.
New Servers Being Trained! Being an altar server is a sacred privilege and a special responsibility. Altar servers are a very important part of the Liturgy as they assist the priest on the Altar during the Sunday Masses and Holy Days throughout the year. Fr. Beerman is training 4th and 5th graders in the month
of February so by the beginning of March, you will be seeing some new altar servers! Thank you to all of our servers for the wonderful job they do and we welcome those newly trained servers too! Others who wish to come to a training, one will be held on Wednesday Feb. 12
