Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Lent is here, and hopefully, our various disciplines that will

help us search our souls and grow closer to Christ have

begun in earnest.

As you may know, this joyful season of renewal has its

origins in preparation for Baptism. The Church established

Lent, which we call the “springtime of the Church” as an

intense time of final preparation for adults who were to be

brought into the life of Christ and the family of God through

the waters of Baptism. Over time, however, the Church

recognized the value these forty days afford the baptized as

well. While the prayers of the Mass and the focus of the

season still remind us of its fundamental purpose to journey

with those preparing for Baptism, it is a time of preparation

and penance for us all, as we strive to renew our life in

Christ through the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and

almsgiving.

While our parishes are not preparing to baptize any adults

this year, we do have three candidates for full communion

with the Church through the Sacraments of Confirmation

and Eucharist. Amy Ruggiero, Nicole Villegas, and Kevin

Williamson have been studying diligently for months,

deeply discerning for years, and eagerly anticipating their

reception into the Catholic community for some time now.

This weekend, at the 11:00 Mass, we will ritually send them

from our communities for presentation to Bishop Thomas at

Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in

Toledo at the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing

Conversion at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. For them and their

sponsors, this is a significant step towards the ultimate goal

of completing their initiation into the People of God. Please

join me in praying for them today and throughout this

Lenten Season, and let us give thanks to God for the new life

he brings to our family of faith through their presence, their

prayer, their preparation, their participation, and their

witness.

A blessed Lent to you!

Sincerely,

Reverend Scott S. Woods

Pastor
