The Gospel reminds us that God’s mercy is a pure gift offered freely to all repentant sinners. No sin, not even
mortal sin, is beyond the mercy of God. The Catechism teaches that mortal sin destroys charity and cuts us
off from the love of God because we put something or someone before God. It specifies 3 conditions for mor-
tal sin – grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent. A sin against the 10 Commandments is grave
matter. Full knowledge means we know that we broke a commandment, and deliberate consent means that we
chose to break the commandment knowing it was seriously wrong. The younger son in today’s parable com-
mitted a mortal sin. His request to have his inheritance is equivalent to him wishing that his father were dead. He would
rather have his share of the money rather than his father’s love. His wish is granted and he leaves with his riches. Soon he
spends and loses his wealth and then he becomes aware of his wretched state. He has willingly and knowingly left his father.
He has cut himself off from his father’s love and friendship. He is dressed in rags and longing to eat the trash that is fed to
pigs. This is the state of our soul when we commit mortal sin. Yet there is hope! His memory of his father’s love and friend-
ship bring him to his senses. He recognizes his grave sin and accepts responsibility for it. He admits that he does not de-
serve mercy; he knows he is unworthy. He says, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you, I no longer deserve
to be called your son treat me as one of your servants.” He has hope and returns in repentance to his Father for forgiveness.
What’s the result? He is immediately forgiven, welcomed and restored to his status as his Father’s son with all its rights and
privileges. No sin is greater than God’s mercy, all we have to do is repent and come back to God. Fr. Dallas

VOCATION CORNER
Who is the Patron Saint of Your Vocation?
Everyone has a vocation, and every vocation has at least
one patron saint. Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we
are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also
lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so
closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is
set before us.” These “witnesses” are believers who have
gone before us, and are available to pray for us and cheer
us on in our spiritual journey.
Are you trying to discern your vocation? Ask St.
Alphonsus Liguori, a powerful intercessor for voca-
tions, to intercede on your behalf for wisdom and guid-
ance. Another discernment patron is St. Ignatius of
Loyola, whose Spiritual Exercises are a beneficial aid.
If you are called to a religious vocation, the following
saints can help you:
St. Alphonsus Liguori - patron of vocations & theologians
St. Junipero Serra - patron of vocations
St. John Vianney - patron of priests
St. Charles Boromeo - patron of seminarians
St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows - patron of clergy
St. Scholatica - patron of nuns
St. Benedict - patron of monks
Engaged couples can call on St. Valentine and St.
Agnes for guidance.
For those already married, call on the following saints:
St. Joseph - patron of married people
St. Monica - patron of married women
St. Priscilla, St. Valentine - patron of good/happy mar-
riages
St. Rita of Cascia, St. Thomas More, St. Gengulphus of
Burgundy - patron of difficult marriages
St. Adelaide of Burgundy - patron of second marriages
Begin building a relationship with your vocation’s patron
saint today!
“SUFFERING & THE LOVE OF GOD”
Why would an all-powerful, all-
loving God allow suffering and evil
in the world? As Fr. Robert Spitzer,
S.J., Ph.D. explains, unsatisfying an-
swers to this important question are
the #1 reason for atheism today. But
by answering this question with logic
and love (as well as with scientific,
peer-reviewed evidence for the exis-
tence of life after death), we can not only answer this ques-
tion truthfully and satisfactorily, but also teach our fellow
Christians how to suffer well, in preparation for the limit-
less love of God that awaits us in eternity.
Comments
“Fr. Spitzer answered so many of my questions about the
existence of God, suffering, life after death. Wow. Just...
