The flu season has come early to Santa Clara County. The County Department of Public Health has requested that we introduce adaptations to the Eucharistic Liturgy, until further notice. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, Holy Communion will not be shared under the form of Consecrated Wine. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. Should a communicant be unwilling to follow this directive, that person is to receive Holy Communion after everyone else has done so. People should refrain from holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The exchanging Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not require shaking hands or touching. All who administer Holy Communion are to wash their hands with an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution, such as Purell, before and after they administer the Sacrament. This precaution also extends to those who minister to the homebound. The obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symptoms to remain at home. Thank you for your immediate attention to these matters.

Please take an “ornament” and bring an UNWRAPPED gift appropriate for the age and gender noted on the ornament. Please bring your gifts and place them under the tree up until Sunday, December 10th, or to the Parish Office until Friday, December 15th when the presents will be taken to St. Justin’s for distribution.

The Advent Season is upon us. It is that wonderful season when Christians all over the world prepare for the coming of our Savior through the birth of God’s son, Jesus Christ. Advent wreaths are placed at our front doors, and a festive mood fills the air around us. With eager anticipation and happiness in our hearts, we await for His coming.

On December 15, the church bells will be ringing at 7:00 P.M. at our church, Saint Lawrence the Martyr Parish, to mark the beginning of our novena Masses for “Simbang Gabi” or “night worship.” An annual tradition that reflects the deep roots of the religious culture of the Philippines, the “Simbang Gabi” is a time to hope, a time to pray, and a time to eagerly wait for the coming of our Messiah.

The Filipino Catholic Community warmly invites everyone in our parish and school community to participate in this annual tradition. Bishop Patrick McGrath will be the presider during the Mass on December 16, Saturday, after which, there will be a simple reception and fun fellowship at the Community Center. On December 22, Friday, a pot-luck reception will be held after this Mass where the parishioners, families, and friends get-together at the Community Center to enjoy the festive spirit the Season brings.

Come and join in the “Simbang Gabi” Novena Masses! If you are interested, sponsor a novena Mass on any of the “Simbang Gabi” dates. Sign-up sheets will be available at the church entrance doors after the Masses on December 2 and 3, 2017 and on December 9 and 10, 2017. Members of the Filipino Catholic Community will be at the entrance doors to facilitate the signing up for those who would like to sponsor a Mass.

Written late in the first century or early second century, 2 Peter may be the last New Testament book to be written. By the time of its circulation, the Church had been waiting well over a half century for Christ to return. In last week’s Gospel, we heard the parable of the householder whose return was certain, but when it would occur was not known. So too is the return of the Son of Man. Until he returns, believers are to remain attentive. He tells them repeatedly to watch. Such teaching led to the expectation that Christ’s return would be soon, certainly in the lifetime of his first disciples. The author of 2 Peter writes in part to assure the next generations of believers that what we consider “delay” is not so with God: “with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day.” Since from a human perspective, the waiting has been long and filled with uncertainty, we could well expect an exhortation for patience. Instead, it is God who is patient, “patient with you,” adding that God wishes all to come to repentance. When the day of the Lord ultimately comes, it will arrive a like a thief, an image found in the Gospel accounts (Matthew 24:43-44; Luke 12:39). Along with examples from parables, the New Testament is filled with other imagery to describe coming apocalyptic events. Sights and sounds that are familiar point to future events that have never been seen or heard, but that will certainly come about. Whether Jesus’ discourses, Paul’s letters or other apocalyptic passages in the Bible, the intent is not to describe a literal scenario of what will occur, but to urge righteous living in the present. Coupled with the message of the coming day of the Lord with power and might, the author instructs people how they are to live in the here and now. They should conduct themselves with holiness and devotion, waiting without spot or blemish, and being at peace. These ancient instructions remain sound advice as we continue to wait for the day of the Lord.

Volunteer Opportunities The Sacristan Ministry

The Ministry of Sacristan is a time-honored ministry in the Catholic Church. The Sacristan provides an important and essential service to the community by doing all the things that are necessary for our liturgical celebrations. The Sacristan is required to prepare the worship space for its celebrations ranging from the cleaning of the Church and its furnishings to the cleaning of the vessels and linens used in the liturgies. The Ministry of Sacristan is a “behind the scenes” ministry.

At St. Lawrence Parish and Education Center the Ministry of Sacristan is divided into three different ministries:

SETUP SACRISTANS: Preparing the table before the Liturgy is the setup sacristan’s responsibility. Arriving at least 30 minutes before Mass to set out all the items needed for liturgy and then staying after liturgy to clean up and put everything away. Time commitment: One Sunday a month (one hour).

SANCTUARY ATTENDANTS: The Sanctuary Attendants clean the Church each Friday or Saturday by working in teams of two. They are responsible for making sure the worship space is clean and tidy for the weekend Masses. Currently there are 4 teams so the time commitment is once every four weeks. It takes two people one hour a week.

LAUNDERERS: The Launderers are responsible for the washing and ironing of the altar linens, towels and Altar Server albs used during Mass. Time commitment: Currently we have 12 launderers so the commitment is once every 12 weeks. Depending on the amount of linens (more during Easter & Christmas) it could take at least 2 hours.

At this time the greatest need are Sanctuary Attendants and Setup Sacristans.

“Live in the Here and Now” taken from Commentary On Today’s Second Reading

Enticing aromas of delectable treats filled the morning air of November 21st for our annual Multicultural Day Feast and Special Person Day. For this longstanding tradition, Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School students each invite a Special Person to join them for a feast celebrating the diversity of our SLEMS community. Parents and students bring homemade dishes from around the globe, honoring their heritage.

Milk Rice from Sri Lanka, Filipino Sticky Rice and Japanese sushi exemplified how various cultures prepare the same food staple.

Having sushi, guacamole, pastry puffs and egg rolls all on one table perfectly reflects our multicultural valley.

Handmade Mexican tamales accompanied “Xocolatl,” Mexican hot chocolate churned and foamed by hand with an authentic “molinillo.”

Parents proudly brought recipes of their unique dishes.

What a wonderful tradition for our students to share their culture with each other as they enjoyed family, friendship and food!!

PALABRA QUE DA VIDA

En este segundo domingo de adviento, seguimos preparando el camino del Señor. Y fijamos la mirada en San Juan Bautista, quien nos dice: “Yo los he bautizado con agua, pero Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo...” (Mc 1, 1- 8)

Estamos hablando por lo tanto de un bautismo con fuego, con un Dios que nos tiene que mover por dentro para que seamos capaces de hacer lo que él quiere que hagamos; para que seamos capaces de creer en él y de obrar en consecuencia.

Esta es la invitación que nos hace el Señor esta semana: ¡Creer que Dios es capaz de darnos la fuerza para actuar, mover nuestros corazones y transformar nuestras vidas!

Con frecuencia tenemos la impresión de que no hay remedio para el mundo, ni tampoco para nuestra alma. Nos da la sensación de que todo está perdido. Creemos que lo hemos intentado todo y que ya no hay nada por hacer.

Al estar preparándonos para la Navidad, tenemos que volver a experimentar la fuerza de la gracia, y creyendo en esta Gracia, ponernos en sintonía con Dios.

¿Qué significa creer en la Gracia, en la fuerza de Dios? Significa hacer aquello que Dios nos pide, sin temor a las consecuencias; significa escuchar la voz de Dios y saber que él no nos va a abandonar cuando nos metamos en la aventura que nos pide. También significa creer en ese Dios aunque las cosas no estén sucediendo como nos parece que tendrían que suceder.

Pensemos en la Virgen María, la llena de gracia: ¡Porque creía en la fuerza de Dios aceptó correr los riesgos que entrañaba hacer la voluntad de Dios! Ella sabía que para los hombres lo que el Señor le proponía era imposible, pero para Dios –como le dijo el ángel- esa palabra no existe. Pongamos esta semana nuestra mirada en ella, de una manera especial, más intensa. Siempre debió parecer todo imposible desde un punto de vista humano: Imposible la encarnación; imposible que su niño fuera Dios; imposible que si era Dios muriera en la cruz; imposible la resurrección. ¡Pero siempre creyó en Dios, creyó en su fuerza, en su gracia, y porque creyó esperó y porque esperó venció!
