STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you….” MATTHEW 5:44 Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communications with God, it opens our hearts and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy.” When we pray for others, even “our enemies,” maybe it softens their hearts as well.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 19, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

ARE YOU CELEBRATING A SPECIAL

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN 2017?

The Archdiocese would like to honor those couples who celebrate five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2017. These anniversary liturgies will take place in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred

April 30, 2017 at 3:00 pm (25 years and 5 years) May 7, 2017 at 3:00 pm (50 years)

We extend our warmest congratulations to those who are celebrating one of these special anniversaries and hope you will be able to attend the liturgy. Please be sure to notify our parish secretary Gerry Carolan no later than April 11 so we can send your name to the Archdiocese.

INVITATION TO A SPECIAL MARIAN DEVOTION

Everyone is encouraged to learn about and take part in a special devotion called Total Consecration. This method of consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary was made known by St. Louis De Montfort in his book True Devotion to Mary. It is a spiritual devotion that helps to bring souls to a perfect imitation of Christ by imitating His Mother. The consecration is accomplished through a 33-day exercise of prayer (about 5-10 minutes per day) prior to a Marian Feast. The next consecration day will be the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25. The preparation will begin on February 20. Members of the Legion of Mary have the necessary materials available at no charge. Please contact Pat at 201-599-2123 or email [email protected] for more information.

In the late 1890s, Father Wilhelm Grutza knew he needed a larger church for his parish, St. Josaphat’s in Milwaukee, which was serving

12,000 parishioners, many of them recent immigrants from Poland. He hired architect Erhard Brielmaier to draw up designs for a new church that was to resemble St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, with a similar cross-shaped floor plan and majestic dome. But just before construction was to begin in 1896, the pastor asked Brielmaier to modify his plans in response to an inviting opportunity he learned about, although the resemblance to St. Peter’s would remain. Fr. Grutza had heard that the federal government was about to demolish Chicago’s Post Office and Custom House, and arranged to buy it for $20,000 to use its salvageable materials. They were loaded on to 500 railroad cars—200,000 tons of it in all—and brought to the parish. Blocks of stone, granite columns, bronze doors and railings and light fixtures all became part of the new church, whose exterior was finished in 1901. The only building in America that had a larger dome was the United States Capitol. Cost overruns on the church put the parish into serious financial trouble. In 1910, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee persuaded the Conventual Franciscan Friars to take administrative and pastoral responsibility for the parish. They satisfied its debt in 1925 and still run the parish today. St. Josaphat’s was designated the nation’s third basilica in 1929.

In 1926, after the debt was retired, the parish was able to proceed with plans to adorn the church’s interior, hiring Roman artist Gonippo Raggi to take charge of the task, which was beautifully accomplished by 1929. Raggi and his workers painted murals, decorated the church’s columns to give the illusion that they were marble, and did extensive ornamental plasterwork, completing one of America’s most impressive Catholic churches. Professor Raggi also supervised the interior works of art for our Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, so you don’t have to travel to Milwaukee to see what he could do. He also worked on St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton and on a number of other New Jersey churches, including St. Patrick’s Pro-cathedral, St. Lucy’s and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark, the former chapel for our major seminary in Mahwah’s Darlington section (now part of a condominium complex), the St. Lucy Filippini Chapel at Villa Walsh in Morristown and the exquisite church of St. Catharine in Spring Lake, built by a Philadelphia financier as a memorial to his daughter. Catholics have always wanted their churches to be as beautiful as they could possibly make them, believing that the worship of God calls for the best that can be provided.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

AT SAINT JOSEPH PARISH MARCH 3—APRIL 28

When grieving the loss of a loved one, individuals may feel overwhelmed

and lonely. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Recognizing that by virtue of our baptism into the Christian faith we are called by Jesus to minister to one another, our parish community of Saint Joseph will offer a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Josefina Morales and Kurt Strobach for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a confidential, educational and spiritual environment. The group will meet for 8 weeks on Fridays (7:00-9:00 pm) from March 3 through April 28. If you would like to participate of if you need more information, please contact our parish secretary Gerry at 201-261-0148.

A LENTEN MISSION ON FORGIVENESS AND MERCY

CONDUCTED BY THE

FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF THE RENEWAL

—MARCH 6-8 Be sure to circle March 6-7-8 for a very special Lenten Mission here at Saint Joseph Parish. Fr. Francis Mary along with several other Friars of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal will offer three nights of prayer and reflection with emphasis on conversing with the Lord, forgiveness and God’s mercy. You may be familiar with the Friars from their EWTN program “Sunday Night Prime” which is broadcast every Sunday at 8:00 pm. The Friars also recently received pontifical recognition from Pope Francis. In addition to the talks (conducted before the exposed Blessed Sacrament), the Friars will provide music for each evening, the opportunity for Confession, and a Eucharistic healing procession on the final night. They will also make available for purchase books by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Fr. Andrew Apostoli.

THE FRIARS WILL ALSO PREACH AT ALL OUR MASSES THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 4-5.

SINGLE PARENT SUPPORT GROUP According to US Census data, 30% of children living in New Jersey currently live in a single parent household. Single Parenting is difficult, non-stop and often goes unappreciated. For many single parents, they are a provider, nurturer and disciplinarian. It can be overwhelming trying to carry out each of these roles. The Family Life Office has created and is offering a support group specific to the needs of single parents. Below is a list of parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark who offer this support group for single parents. If interested in attending, please call St. Matthew Parish, 555 Prospect Avenue, Ridgefield, NJ at 201-945-3500 to register.

SUPPORT GROUPS FOR SEPARATED/DIVORCED CATHOLICS

It’s true...there’s no such thing as “Catholic divorce”...but millions of Catholics DO get civilly divorced. Maybe you or someone you know has suffered the breakdown of the marriage and family, or maybe they are going through it right now. No matter how long it’s been, the Church is here to help. Here is a list of nearby parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark that offer a support group for the divorced and/or separated: St. Peter the Apostle, River Edge 201-261-3366 Church of the Presentation, Upper Saddle River 201-327-1313 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Ridgewood 201-447-2043

Our annual Cornerstone Retreat (one for women—March 3-4; one for men—March 31-April 1) takes place in Saint Joseph lower school and begins on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. Your overnight stay, all meals (lovingly prepared!) and plenty of snacks will be provided throughout the 26 hours. The weekend activities will help you to affirm your own gifts and discover how you can use these gifts for the good of others. It is a fun way for church members to get to know one another and build lasting bonds of trust and support. There are short presentations followed by small group discussions, quiet personal time, and Reconciliation. There is also time for fun and relaxation! The weekend concludes with a Family Mass t 8:00 pm on Saturday evening. Family and friends are invited to attend. This is a weekend of great surprises, prepared especially for YOU! Every team member is dedicated to ensuring an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. For additional information or to REGISTER, pick up a brochure in our church literature racks or go to our parish website: sjcnj.org Click on “Parish Activities”>“Cornerstone XXV.” Or call or email our coordinators: Ralph Mastrangelo at 201-634-9539 or at [email protected] or Ruth Ann Harnek at 201-265-8997 or at [email protected]
