Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 1, 2017

Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. — Philippians 2:5

Religious Education Dear Friends, Thank you to everyone who participated in last Sunday’s Family Day! It was such a joy to see parents and children working together. Take a minute to admire the beautiful Family Coats of Arms on the walls of our Family Center – these represent the strengths and gifts and blessings of the families in our religious education program. We promise to use these gifts as missionary disciples, and to spread the message of Jesus Christ everywhere we go! We have our second class today – don’t forget that all grades have class from 10-11:30am. Blessings, Eva

Pastor’s Notes God’s Ways

In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The LORD’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love.

Blessing of Pets & Animals Sunday, October 8th The blessing of pets and animals is often celebrated on October 4, the feast of St. Francis of Assisi or on a Sunday near that date. We will have a special blessing on Sunday, October 8th after all Masses. Come one, come all, but bring those “pleasant creatures.” In the Scriptures, the act of blessing means 'the imparting of power or life.' The person performing the blessing is mediating that power from God or Christ to the person performing or the animal involved. To bless is more than an expression of goodwill and caring. To bless is to impart God's power in person! The blessing of each animal, by name, means that health, healing and life are being mediated from God for the benefit of the animal in its relationship with its human partners. Be careful not to reinforce the separation of human animals and other animals by this blessing. Instead, consider reinforcing our common kinship by blessing ALL animals--human and otherwise.

Adult Formation Fr. Leonard Klein will hold six Bible Study Lectures on the "Book of Revelation" on Mondays - Oct 9, 16, 23, 30 and Nov 6 & 7th. They will run from 10:30am - 12:00pm.

His overview is: "The Book of Revelation has through the history of the Church contributed both to undue confusion and undue certainty. Too often the central message of the victory of Christ is lost. Fr. Leonard Klein will lead a course looking at the complex symbolism and the simple announcement of the Gospel that make up the message of the last book of the Bible." Students currently attending a Catholic elementary or secondary school in a hurricane-battered diocese may attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Wilmington as a tuition-free guest for the current academic year, Bishop Malooly announced Sept. 19. “A number of families must relocate due to the recent hurricanes, and the Diocese of Wilmington wishes to assist any who may come to Delaware or the Eastern Shore of Maryland in continuing the faith and academic development of their children while the rebuild their own lives and their homes,” said Louis De Angelo, superintendent of schools for the diocese. The bishop wrote to the archbishops of Galveston-Houston and Miami, saying, “We recognize the tremendous work that lies ahead for relocated families, and we wish to assist them in continuing their children’s Catholic school education without tuition worries.
