Religious Education No class this Sunday – Spring Break. Again, many, many thanks to all who took part in any way in our Family Service Day last Saturday. All ages, from toddlers to senior citizens, worked together to package meals which will be distributed to our hungry brothers and sisters in Burkina Faso. Our Lord promised, “Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am with them” (Matt. 18:20). God’s presence was with us in the Family Center!

Easter Angels Update During this holy season of Lent, the Easter Angels Ministry of our parish is once again asking you to purchase a meal for one of many less fortunate families in the wider community who might otherwise go without on Easter Sunday. To this end, shopping bags containing a list of nonperishable items are still available in the back of the church for parishioners to fill with listed items and return to church by Palm Sunday, April 5th Alternatively, you may like to make a monetary donation that that will be used to purchase a meat entre’ to round out the meals that are donated. You may place those contributions in the collection – just be sure to use one of the Easter Angels
envelopes available on the table and to make any checks payable to SJOB with Easter Angels on the memo line. Your generous donations will provide an Easter blessing to those who receive them and you can be sure that you will be in their prayers on Easter Sunday as we all celebrate the joy of the resurrection. *Note that if you cannot find some of the items on the grocery list, you should feel free to make such substitutions as you deem appropriate.
Pastor’s Column THIRST
Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many television commercials I’ve seen depicting perspiring athletes lifting a beverage to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flowing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts.

Why Visit a Catholic Cemetery Today? Praying for the dead and attending to their graves bears witness to a community of faith; visiting cemeteries is visiting another ‘part’ of the Church. John M. Grondelski – National Catholic Register
Be Mindful as you Visit our Cemetery
Secure Vehicle and Items – Cemetery grounds are open to the public each day for visitation, during moments of prayer at the gravesite there’s less attention to our surroundings. Even in grief, we can help prevent theft by securing our vehicle and personal belongings when out in public. Exercise Caution – Uneven ground and settling soil around gravesites can create walking hazards throughout the cemetery. Turn off Faucets – Saving water resources is commendable. Helping to prevent WEST NILE or the ZIKA virus from breeding mosquitos is helping us all. Please assist with turning off water faucets. Have all four tires on the pavement – Cemetery curbs and lawn surfaces can get damaged from improperly parked vehicles. Tires can be damaged as well from mounting or rubbing alongside curb surfaces. A well
parked car arrives and leaves safely! Help protect the cemetery lawns and curbs from damage. Watch out for our cemetery critters – they need lunch also. Our cemeteries are places of remembrance, healing and prayer. Our cemeteries are open for visitation every day of the year; therefore, being mindful of others while visiting your loved ones during the Easter Season is appreciated.
The Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 6 at 7 p.m., Holy Cross in Dover. Bishop Malooly blesses three oils — the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorum or oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirmorum) and holy chrism (sacrum chrisma) — which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the diocese for the year. This tradition is rooted in the early Church as noted in the Gelasian Sacramentary (named after Pope Gelasius I, d. 496), but was later absorbed into the Holy Thursday evening Mass; Pope Pius XII issued a new Ordinal for Holy Week, which reinstituted a special Mass of the chrism distinct from the evening Mass. – catholicexchange.
The SJOB choir has been invited to sing at the mass this
year. Limited transportation is being provided by St. Joseph on the Brandywine for choir members and anyone wishing to attend.
Those who wish to volunteer as a delegate to pick up the oils, should contact [email protected].
For transportation needs, please email [email protected] A limited number of seats are available for this purpose at this time.
The Date of the Equinox Can Vary On Friday, March 20, 2020, the day and night will be of almost equal duration in most time zones in the world. Remember when Spring Equinox was celebrated on March 21? Well, remember again, because the last time that happened was in 2007 and the next time it will happen is in 2101! Contrary to popular wisdom, the March Equinox can take place on March 19, 20 or 21. In the 21st century, the March Equinox has only occurred twice on March 21 – 2003 and 2007. A March 19 equinox will be more frequent during the last decades of the century. Every year on the Spring Equinox, we hear about how it is the only day of the year when an egg can be perfectly balanced on its end. Many try it and those who fail are told that they didn't try it at the exact time of the equinox. The truth, however, is that there is nothing magical about the equinox or the time it occurs – you can balance an egg perfectly on its end on any other day. Don't believe us? Try it yourself! - Aparna Kher
