STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet….” LUKE 7:44 Today’s Gospel calls us to consider how we serve God. Do we consume like the Pharisee who simply reclines at the table and expects to be served? Or, do we contribute like the woman who kneels before Jesus and washes His feet? Every day we must make a choice. Take or give? Consume or contribute? Recline or serve?

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JUNE 12, 2016

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

If you want to read something faith-related this summer, you may consider these books:

∎ Mike Aquilina and Jim Papandrea’s Seven Revolutions: How Christianity Changed the World and Can Change It Again (Image) describes a tradition and human record Catholics can be proud of. ∎ Esteve Pujol Pons’s A Child’s Book of Values (Paulist Press) is a solid contribution to the character formation of young people. ∎ George Weigel’s City of Saints: A Pilgrimage to John Paul II’s Kraków (Image) is a fascinating appreciation of one of Catholicism’s great centers by St. John Paul II’s foremost biographer. ∎ Mark Riebling’s Church of Spies: The Pope’s Secret War Against Hitler (Basic Books) is a vigorous and convincing defense of Pope Pius XII, who has been the target of grossly unfair charges of moral negligence during World War II. ∎ Archie Rand’s The 613 (Blue Rider) describes the traditional laws of Judaism and illustrates each with his own greatly expressive paintings. ∎ Robert Royal’s A Deeper Vision: The Roman Catholic Intellectual Tradition in the Twentieth Century (Ignatius Press) is a rich feast of our Faith’s thought, which couldn’t be further from Fundamentalism. G. K. Chesterton, Jacques Maritain, Joseph Pieper, Romano Guardini, Karl Rahner, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Bernard Lonergan, Georges Bernanos, François Mauriac and Christopher Dawson are just a few writers he profiles. ∎ Robert J. Hutchinson’s Searching for Jesus: New Discoveries in the Quest for Jesus of Nazareth—And How They Confirm the Gospel Accounts (Thomas Nelson, 2015) surveys recent New Testament scholarship that has contested modern skepticism. ∎ Josephine Nobisso’s The Weight of the Mass: A Tale of Faith (Gingerbread House) is an illustrated children’s book that tells of a poor woman who asks a baker for a crust of bread, promising to offer her prayers at Mass in return. When the baker sarcastically refuses her and asks how much of his goods a Mass is worth (writing “one Mass” on a thin piece of paper and placing it on his scale), no matter how many items he places on the other side of the scale, the paper continues to outweigh his products. This book would make a delightful First Communion present. (continued above)

Here are some good books of fiction and poetry:

∎ Matthew Quick’s Love May Fail (Harper) is about Portia Kane, a South Jerseyan who has escaped an abusive marriage and is trying to help her high school English teacher Nate Verdon, now a disabled recluse after being attacked by an ex-student. Portia recalls how Nate ended each school year by handing his students Official Member of the Human Race cards and urging them to “make daring choices, work hard, enjoy the ride, and remember—you become exactly whomever you choose to be.” ∎ Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk’s A Strangeness in My Mind (Knopf) is the story of Mevlut Karatas, who sells boza (a “near-beer”) on Istambul’s streets. Mevlut’s father tells him: “You will see everything without being seen. You will hear everything but pretend you haven’t….” This makes Mevlut a good focal point for telling the story of forty years of his country’s life. ∎ Judith Hooper’s Alice in Bed (Counterpoint) is based on the diary of Alice James, sister of Henry and William, who is confined to bed at an English spa for her last five years of life. Unable to move, she spends her time “visiting all of the places and people I have known,” remarking, at one point, that “A congenial faith flows through me now, making all of the arid places green.” ∎ Paolo Giordano’s Like Family (Pamela Dorman Books) tells how a physics professor and his wife hire “Mrs. A” as a housekeeper and nanny. She does much to hold the household together, but when she is stricken with cancer the question arises, should she be regarded as a member of the family or not? ∎ Christopher Buckley’s The Relic Master (Simon and Schuster) is an historical novel that has German artist Albrecht Du rer as one of its main characters. ∎ Sarah Pennypacker’s Pax (Balzer + Bray) is a story for young readers. When Peter’s father leaves for war, Peter has to live with his grandfather and can’t take his pet fox with him. Peter then searches for him in the forest. ∎ Julian Barnes’s The Noise of Time (Knopf) describes the fearful existence of composer Dimitri Shostakovich in the repressive Soviet Union of the 1930s. When the official newspaper Pravda condemns one of his works as “muddle instead of music,” the article contains so many errors and misspellings that Shostakovich assumes Stalin himself must have written it, and so he waits outside his apartment at night, with his bags packed, so his family won’t be wakened when the NKVD comes to arrest him. (From the Pastor’s Desk—continued) ∎ Frank Viva’s, Sea Change (Toon) is the story of a boy of 12 who is sent to stay with elderly relatives in Nova Scotia for the summer. There he learns lessons about life from his dealings with the children he meets and from his experiences on his family’s fishing boat. ∎ Adrien Bosc’s Constellation (Other Press) is a novel that tells of a 1946 Air France crash in the Azores that claimed the lives of singer Edith Piaf, her boyfriend, boxer Marcel Cerdon, and Ginette Neveu, the most celebrated violinist of her day. ∎ Ruth Sepetys, in her children’s book Salt to the Sea (Philomel), recounts the 1945 sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, history’s greatest disaster at sea, which claimed more lives than the loss of the Titanic and the Lusitania combined. ∎ Dana Gioia’s 99 Poems: New and Selected (Graywolf Press) offers the work of our greatest exponent of poetry that uses classical forms.

Washington Post #1710, Paramus, will be coming to our parish on June 25-26 to raise funds to help needy veterans at the Paramus Memorial Veterans Home. 100% of your contributions will be used for the veterans’ needs.
