WORLD MISSION SUNDAY—OCTOBER 18-19 Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to reach out and help build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your daily prayers. Please come prepared next weekend with your parish envelope (or an envelope marked “World Mission”) to give generously in the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. For more information, please visit www.IAmAMissionary.org

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE POPE’S MESSAGE

“Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ. … All members of the church are called to participate in the [World] mission, for the Church is missionary by her very nature: she was born “to go forth.” … World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands. … A monetary contribution on the part of individuals is a sign of a self-offering, first to the Lord and then to others … a means for the evangelization of humanity built on love.”

TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, OCTOBER 12, 2014

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

MEN’S DAY 2014—OCTOBER 18 FRANCISCAN FRIARS OF RENEWAL

“Become who you are.”—Pope Saint John Paul II Registration will take place on Saturday, October 18 at 8:00 am at the Most Blessed Sacrament Friary, 375 13th Avenue, Newark, NJ or can be done ahead of time at NewarkFriary.org Admission and lunch are free. Music and talks by Damon Owens, executive director of the Theology of the Body Institute will begin at 9:00 am. Holy Mass will be celebrated by Coadutor Archishop Bernard Hebda, with confessions available all day.

█ St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), Carmelite mystic and Doctor of the Church whose feast is Wednesday, combined soaring spiritual experiences

with energetically practical realism in a life that showed an amazing degree of intelligent wit and sheer human charm. Her writings are classics of Catholic spirituality. Her first work, The Way of Perfection, written shortly after she established the Carmel of St. Joseph in Avila in 1562, the first of her sixteen foundations, reminds us

That within us there is a palace of immense magnificence: the whole building is of gold and precious stones: in a word , it is every way as it ought to be for such a Lord. Forget not, also, that you are partly the cause that this edifice is such as it is: for truly there is no building of such great beauty as a pure soul, filled with virtues; and the greater these virtues are, the brighter do these stones sparkle; and that in this palace the great king lodges, who has been pleased to become your Guest; and that He sits there on a throne of immense value, which is your heart.

█ Among the truly great challenges of life is to think of Fall without thinking of apples. Who doesn’t like them,

whether in their natural condition or in humanly enhanced outcomes of pies, muffins, cakes and cider (plain or hard). The closing of so many Bergen County apple orchards has compelled many who seek fresh-air enjoyment of harvesting apples to take an autumn day-trip to New York State,

an adventure that can sometimes be more exhausting than we expect, a feeling that once led Robert Frost to write:

My long two-pointed ladder’s sticking through a tree Toward heaven still, And there’s a barrel that I didn’t fill Beside it, and there may be two or three Apples I didn’t pick upon some bough, But I am done with apple-picking now. … I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend. And I keep hearing from the cellar bin The rumbling sound Of load on load of apples coming in. For I have had too much Of apple picking: I am overtired Of the great harvest I myself desired.

If you find yourself in such a condition, or if you want to do something useful and share some enjoyable time with other parishioners, or even if you have nothing to

(continued above)

do next Saturday, why not come to our parish Day of Service? There will be a large array of tasks, a chance to meet others, and a free lunch—any of which make it a good choice! Thanks to the hard-working committee chaired by Irene Galvan for handling the extensive planning for the day. May it greet us with fall’s best weather.

Msgr. David Hubba

FATHER BENEDICT J. GROESCHEL He moved many with his sincere faith, towering intellect, passionate preaching, and commitment to the poor. Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, beloved priest and preacher, died on October 3, 2014, the vigil of the Feast of St. Francis, after complications with an ongoing illness. He was 81. Fr. Benedict was a founder of the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (CFR)a reform community started in 1987 by eight Capuchin Friars based in New York City. A priest and psychologist, he was director of Trinity Retreat House in Larchmont, New York, and also taught Pastoral Psychology for many years at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie.

Fr. Benedict was a popular writer, preacher, retreat master, and evangelist on Catholic television. His greatest joy was serving the poor and underprivileged. Founder of St. Francis House and Good Counsel Homes, he also served as chaplain at Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry for 14 years. Always deeply concerned with the welfare of others, he tirelessly provided food, clothing, and assistance to people in need—people he always considered his

friends. (From the website of the Franciscan Friars of Renewal)

Fr. Groeschel conducted a Divine Mercy Mission here at Saint Joseph on April 5, 2010. He is shown with then pastor, Fr. George Reilly, on the altar of Saint Joseph Church. (Photo by John Fuhrman.) *Be sure to watch our Pastor’s Column next week for more on Fr. Groeschel.
