Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 16, 2020 ~ Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

How God’s Law enriches our Life Today’s First Reading from Sirach, reminds us that in life we all have a choice: be-

tween good and evil, i.e., life and death. When we turn from God and sin, we choose death, that of our soul or some oth-

er kind of death. When we sin we say “no” to life with God, the only Real existence. The Responsorial, from Psalm 119,

underscores the importance of internalizing God’s law in our hearts. The Jewish people had received God’s law by Di-

vine intervention; other nations did not know how to please God. So the Israelites viewed God’s law as a gift, in which

they found life and hope. The Psalmist recognizes that we cannot go beyond mere observation of the law without God’s

grace, so he asks for the grace to internalize God’s law. May we have the grace to see God’s law as a gift and interiorize

it. In the Second Reading, St Paul instructs us to embrace not worldly wisdom, but God’s wisdom, i.e., the wisdom of the

cross. For we are called to observe Gospel values and in so doing, serve others with the gifts God has given us. In to-

day’s Gospel, Jesus enlightens us as to the spiritual intent behind the commandments and explains the real meaning of

God’s law. He challenges / exhorts us to look inside ourselves, to interiorize the law; not only are we asked to not com-

mit murder, but further, to not even think unkind or mean thoughts of others. Our Lord also places great importance on

reconciliation with others, beginning with those closest to us, in order to genuinely worship Him. Similarly, Jesus ex-

tends the prescriptions of adultery, to go beyond asking how far can we go before its a sin, to asking how can we protect

the sanctity of marriage and have a chaste disposition. To emphasize the importance of self mastery Jesus uses exaggera-

tion: cutting off limbs, a Semitic way of speaking. Moses received the Law indi-

rectly, from an angel. We have received the New Law directly from God, in the

Person of Jesus. May our efforts to live His law more deeply, in sincerity and

truth, bring us closer to Him and enrich our lives.

Cómo la Ley de Dios enriquece nuestra Vida La Pr imera Lectura de hoy de

Sirácides, nos recuerda que en la vida todos tenemos una opción: entre el bien y

el mal, es decir, la vida o la muerte. Cuando nos alejamos de Dios y pecamos,

optamos por la muerte, la de nuestra alma u otro tipo de muerte. Cuando peca-

mos, decimos “no” a la vida con Dios, la única existencia Verdadera. El Respon-

sorial, del Salmo 119, realza la importancia de internalizar la ley de Dios en nuestros corazones. El pueblo judío había

recibido la ley de Dios por medio de intervención Divina; otras naciones no sabían cómo agradar a Dios. Así que los Is-

raelitas veían la ley de Dios como un regalo, en donde encontraban vida y esperanza. El Salmista reconoce que no pode-

mos ir más allá de la observación de la ley sin la gracia de Dios, así que pide la gracia de Dios para internalizar la ley de

Dios. Que tengamos la gracia para ver la ley de Dios como un regalo e interiorizarla. En la Segunda Lectura, San Pablo

nos instruye a no abrazar el conocimiento mundial, sino la sabiduría de Dios, es decir, la sabiduría de la cruz. Ya que se

nos llama a observar los valores del Evangelio y al hacer esto, servir a los demás con los regalos que Dios nos ha dado.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos ilumina con la intención espiritual detrás de los mandamientos y explica el significado

de la ley de Dios. Nos reta/exhorta a buscar dentro de nosotros mismos, e interiorizar la ley; no sólo se nos pide el no

asesinar, pero al igual, ni siquiera tener pensamientos malos de otros. Nuestro Señor también pone gran importancia en la

reconciliación con otros, comenzando con los que están más cercanos a nosotros, para poder genuinamente alabarlo a Él.

Del mismo modo, Jesús extiende las reglas del adulterio, de no ir más allá de lo que sería un pecado, pero de preguntar

cómo podemos proteger la santidad del matrimonio y tener una disposición casta. Al enfatizar la importancia de la maes-

tría personal, Jesús usa la exageración: cortando brazos y piernas, una forma Semita de hablar. Moisés recibe la Ley indi-

rectamente, de un ángel. Nosotros hemos recibido la Nueva Ley directamente de Dios, en la Persona de Jesús. Que nues-

tros esfuerzos para vivir Su ley profundamente, en sinceridad y verdad, nos acerque más a Él para enriquecer nuestras

vidas.

Upcoming 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal On the weekend of February 22, we will once again have the opportunity to

walk with others as Jesus asks us to do. Together as Catholics, the appeal is a way we can all help in a powerful way.

Many of our sisters and brothers in the North State have endured catastrophic natural disasters. Others still struggle on

the margins of communities. Let us remember them and that each of our gifts, no matter the amount, really do make a

difference in someone’s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give this year.

Victim-survivors of clergy sexual abuse who wish to par ticipate in the Independent Compensation Program will

have an additional month in which to register. Bishops of the six California dioceses involved in the program moved the

registration deadline from Jan. 31 to Feb. 29. The program is open to any victim of child sexual

abuse by a diocesan priest, regardless of when the abuse occurred or the citizenship status of the

participant. The program is confidential, and is not administered by the diocese. For more infor-
