Dear Parishioners, Happy New Year to you all again. The new year has started well. The inaugural meeting of our newly constituted parish council was held on Jan. 5. I was very impressed by the enthusiastic response. I think that we have a good representation of our parishioners, young and old, talented and committed, diverse and gifted. I thank all those who have volunteered to serve as our parish council, and am looking forward to working with them to rebuild our faith family. We briefly discussed about this Year of Mercy and the Lenten renewal programs (Fr. Romane St. Vill has offered to conduct a Lenten Service of lectures on the Year of Mercy). I thank Nancy Young and Paula Tovar for being secretary and assistant secretary to our parish council. The parish council will meet regularly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The Installation Committee also is formed. Let us make it a nice family celebration. Sincerely in Christ Jesus, Father Thomas Kallumady

Baptism of the Lord

At first glance, the Baptism of the Lord might seem an odd feast. Since the Catholic Church teaches that the Sacrament of Baptism is necessary for the remission of sins, particularly Original Sin, why was Christ baptized? After all, He was born without Original Sin, and He lived His entire life without sinning. Therefore, He had no need of the sacrament, as we do. In submitting Himself humbly to the baptism of St. John the Baptist, however, Christ provided the example for the rest of us. If even He should be baptized, though He had no need of it, how much more should the rest of us be thankful for this sacrament, which frees us from the darkness of sin and incorporates us into the Church, the life of Christ on earth! His Baptism therefore, was necessary - not for Him, but for us. Do you want to be on fire for God? John the Baptist said that the Messiah would "baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire." Fire in biblical times was associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as the burning bush which was not consumed when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:2). The image of fire was also used to symbolize God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13), his protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), his holiness (Deuteronomy 4:24), righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9), and his wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16). It is also used of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11 and Acts 2:3). God's fire both purifies and cleanses, and it inspires a reverent fear of God and of his word in us.

“There’s nothing wrong with

happiness. We should treasure every

moment of it. But it’s fleeting, and

no one can be happy all the time.

Joy is a feeling and an attitude of

much greater depth. It comes from

within, not from circumstances.

It’s a feeling of deep satisfaction

with life. Joyful people look at

what’s right with the world and with

people instead of what’s wrong.”

Entonces Juan accedió a bauti-zarlo” (Mt. 3, 14-15).
