The Gospel, this weekend, takes me back to a retreat I hadabout 15 years ago. A bishop used this story of Jesus comingto the seashore and asking Peter to profess his love threetimes. Of course, we all can remember that Peter denied theLord three times and now he professes his love three times.Love wins because it overcomes the sin of denying the Lord.
How many times do we fail to acknowledge the Lord in public settings whenall are looking upon us? How many times do we fail to be associated withJesus when it might “cost” us something? The bishop remembered thiswhen he was by the sea of Galilee many years ago and he composed aprayer. I do not have his prayer, but I made his prayer my own based onthis Gospel: “I love you! I love you!! I love you!!! I give my life to you. Nothalf heartedly, not begrudgingly, not partially but totally, completely andfreely I give myself to you.” I can almost hear Satan laughing at me or is itI, myself, sarcastically doubting this profession of love made so completelyand forcefully. After all, I am so much aware of my sinfulness, failures andweaknesses, and is it not possible I am setting myself up for the bigger fallby making such a total commitment? Yes, but I know that I could never dothis or walk this love without your help and you want this commitment evenmore than I do. I know, too, that your Spirit has not abandoned me. Youthat dwell in me is stronger than him that dwells in the world so I say itagain, “I love you! I love you!! I love you!!! I give my total self to you. TakeLord. Receive all my liberty, my understanding, my entire will. Give onlyyour love and your grace. That’s enough for me. Your love and your graceare enough for me!”

*** Right to Life ***“Even as our ability to manipulate biological life in thelaboratory continues to grow, the principle of life itselfremains elusive and beyond our grasp. Living beings, with all their structure and complexity, should nevercease to impress us and inspire us with a certain awe,so that even in our bated eagerness to harness theirpowers, we might avoid reducing life itself to a merecommodity or raw material for our biotechnical prowessto conquer.” Father T Pacholczyk, Ph.D. of theNational Bioethics Center in PhiladelphiaPrayer – For those in leadership positions, that theymay enact lawws to protect the handicapped, theterminally ill and the unborn.Problem Pregnancy – Call 701-284-6601.
