DEAR LORD, HOW WE’VE WAITED FOR THIS VACATION, AND NOW
IT’S FINALLY HERE! THANK YOU, LORD, FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO
TAKE A BREAK FROM OUR DAILY ROUTINES AND TO
REPLENISH OUR MINDS, BODIES AND SOULS SO THAT WE MAY
BETTER SERVE YOU. SOMETIMES OUR EXPECTATION FOR
VACATIONS ARE UNREALISTIC, AND WE FIND OURSELVES
DISAPPOINTED WHEN THINGS DON'T GO OUR WAY. HELP US TO NOT
WORRY ABOUT HAVING THE “PERFECT” VACATION, BUT TO RELAX
AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT, WHATEVER IT MAY BRING. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THE JOYS THAT AWAIT US... WHETHER
THEY BE THE BEAUTY OF YOUR CREATION, RECREATION WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS, OR PEACE AND SOLITUDE. WATCH
OVER US AND PROTECT US AS WE TRAVEL, AND BRING US SAFELY HOME AGAIN REFRESHED AND RENEWED. AMEN.

For over ten years now, it has been required that all parish volunteers, with
even a remote possibility of access to children and other vulnerable parishioners, annually undergo a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) background check. Without your full cooperation in adhering to these guidelines, we would be hard pressed to be able to continue the ministry offerings that many have become so dependent on, and at a level many have come to not only expect, but appreciate. There are some important and necessary documents listed below that we need to process in order for St. John the Evangelist Parish to remain “in compliance”, as required by the guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese of Boston.
The CORI form requires that you provide the last 6 digits of your social security number and present us with your photo ID. It will take less than 10 minutes to complete. NOTE: This form needs to be renewed every year.
In addition to the CORI form, there are 2, possibly 3, additional documents that we must distribute to all our Parish Volunteers. They are as follows:
! This document must be distributed annually to all Staff members and volunteers .
This document also requires annual distribution. A witness-signed ‘read receipt acknowledgement’ page must be turned in and kept on file in the parish office.
This document requires distribution only when changes are made to the document. If you signed last year, there is no need to sign again. If you did not, then we will need you to witness-sign the ‘read receipt acknowledgement’ page, and turn it into the parish office.
All these documents can be downloaded from our website so that you may print and review at home. IF YOU CHOOSE THIS OPTION, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN AS YOUR SIGNATURE REQURES THE PRESENCE OF A
PARISH STAFF MEMBER TO SERVE AS YOUR WITNESS. Although at first glance it seems like an insurmountable amount of reading, we are confident that once you begin reviewing these documents, you will quickly find that the information provided is of a critical nature. It has been proven that our familiarity with them makes it easier for caring adults, like yourself, to communicate any concerns to the appropriate person(s) regarding a warning sign/red flag of inappropriate behavior.

Holiday Weekend. The optimist says, “The summer has begun!” The pessimist says, “The summer is over.”
Optimist or pessimist, these summer months are full of opportunities to proclaim ‘the kingdom of God is at hand.’ These
exact words might seem out of place at the neighborhood cookout, the pool, or the golf course, but the heart of the
message is one that needs to be shared. Casual conversation can so easily be infused with the message of God’s love and
Jesus’ presence in your life. Try it.

What is the Spiritual Society?
For those of you who have purchased spiritual
bouquets from St. John’s in the past, you are probably
aware that the names of the deceased have been
forwarded to and prayed for by the Propagation of
the Faith. We now offer a second option for our
parishioners. If you purchase a Spiritual Bouquet in
support of the Spiritual Society, like the Propagation
of the Faith, your deceased loved one(s) will be
remembered in prayer for a period of 10 years.
However, they will now be prayed for by our very own
parish family. Once a month, St. John’s will remember
these souls at a Mass specifically reserved for them. This Week’s Readings…

“Wait a minute. . .” Thomas Who?!? Said that?
Nature made all men equal in
Liberty”—this is not a quote from any
Jeffersonian writing, but from St. Thomas Aquinas. In fact,
Aquinas, in the thirteenth century, asserted the principle that
the rights of government are derived from the consent of the
governed. And in the sixteenth century, St. Robert
Bellarmine wrote of the institution of the monarchy as
being based on the election of the subjects; his
description of the ideal constitutional monarchy is strikingly
similar to the organization of government originally
envisioned in the U.S. Constitution, and arguably is even
more democratic. The inalienable rights, natural dignity, and
liberty of each person is actually a time-honored value of the
Catholic Church… In 1892, Pope Leo XIII wrote his
landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum, in which he articulated
the Church’s official stance on the just relationship of the
government to the citizenry. In it, the Holy Father lays out
the principle of subsidiarity: the lowest form of social control
that can effectively accomplish the common good in a
particular matter should be allowed to handle that
matter. In other words (to put this in terms of American
society), the federal government should not interfere in
areas that are best regulated by state government (such as
speed limits). Likewise, the state should leave to county or
local governments those affairs that are best managed at
that level. And the government authorities should not
intrude on those spheres of life that pertain most closely to
the family—which is the most basic unit of society. In this
way, the liberty of the person is respected while the common
good is still attended to… While social structure obviously is
necessary for the prosperity of all people, and the populace
of a given society needs organization into government in
order to mutually co-exist and to flourish, that government is
obligated to care for the whole good of the human person,
which includes each person’s right to individual liberty.
People are obligated by conscience to act in the best interest
of others, in solidarity with the other members of society,
and with true brotherly love for each other—especially for
the poor and disenfranchised. But His Holiness Leo XIII
wisely recognized that governments cannot legislate this
authentic sense of solidarity and cannot compel brotherly
love. The noblest form of government inspires this sort of
charity, freely exercised by the citizens themselves. It should
openly encourage, and even provides incentive for,
expressions of this kind of fraternal love—but always
allowing room for people’s freedom. In this way, a true
society is nurtured, one in which the whole people are
respected because each person is respected. This is
authentic liberty: the freedom to do what is right.
God bless you, and Happy Independence Day!
