Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 11, 2019
"Where your treasure is..."
In case you didn't notice, the gospel of Saint Luke has taken a turn over last Sunday and today, a turn toward challenging us to give up our pursuit of wealth. At the risk of repeating myself when I give my homily this weekend, I want to ask you to consider seriously where Jesus wants to take us in our relationship to him and to money. Jesus begins today's gospel text with very assuring and comforting words: "Do not be afraid any longer, little flock, for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32) He then lays out his economic reform program. "Sell your belongings and give alms." This comes right after he told the story of a rich man who congratulated himself for his success in farming and was planning to build bigger barns to store his produce so he could "eat, drink. and be merry" only to die and face the fact that he was so busy storing up earthly treasures that he no time to become rich in what matters to God.
No doubt Jesus sensed fear in the faces of his followers. They were beginning to realize that his kingdom was not leading them to material prosperity but to something quite the opposite. Maybe they thought, as we do, that Jesus' love for the poor was aimed at improving their situation. In the end, are we not all hoping and working for a world in which every-one has enough? I think we are at the place in last week's gospel where a man asked Jesus to adjudicate a dispute about what he felt was his. There is lots in the gospels and in the teachings of the church about how we should build a society that is just and that provides for all in need, the lowest no less than the richest. But it comes down to each person undergoing a conversion on the heart, from looking at ourselves as the goal of our lives, but looking to God and to the halls of heaven as what life is truly all about.
Today's gospel lays out the path of stewardship in which Jesus asks us to consider the goods of the earth as belonging to God. Whether you inherit worldly goods or earn them, they are not yours to do with as you please. "Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more."
At Masses this weekend I will be appealing to our parishioners at Saint John's to help us prepare for our 150th anniversary in 2021 by contributing to a campaign to raise a significant amount of money,
$700,000, to address the restoration and renovation of our
church as well as some improvements to our school
building and the parish center building which provides
space for our food pantry and outreach to the homeless.
The registered members of Saint John's will be receiving
from me a letter and brochure describing the work that
needs to be done to paint the interior of our church, to
improve lighting, to restore the altar and to replace the
flooring in the church, as well as to provide a safe egress
and facilities for the homeless in the old convent. I wish I
could tell them that if they want to help they can divert
their offerings to this new fund. Such is not the case since
we rely on the weekly and monthly offertory and the
Grand Annual to keep our ministries going and our
facilities open.
So, honestly, I am asking for a sacrificial gift, a serious
commitment to the beauty of our worship space and, on a
smaller but significant scale, to spaces we use for the less
fortunate. I am happy to share the news of this project
with our Saint Thomas family to make you aware of our
efforts because many of us worship together now at times
and we lend a hand to each other's good works. The time
will come before long when I will ask the Saint Thomas
community for their help financially to add a new HVAC
system that will heat and cool the church there more effi-
ciently and effectively.
Let me ask you all to respond to these and all the requests
that I make of you with an ear to the gospel which Jesus
is preaching us at this very time. This is not a new mes-
sage. We did not choose the gospel passages you are
hearing to coincide with this appeal. My point is that
Jesus calls us day in and day out to leave something to
follow him. His call is not just to priests or religious to
forgo a life in this world. Jesus calls us all to be good and
faithful stewards of his gifts, material and spiritual.
This call to stewardship begins with developing an
attitude of gratitude, an abiding awareness of how much
we have been given. Look carefully at what you have and
have been given. Then ask yourself what you can give
back to God, for his glory and for the good of those less
fortunate.
Thank you for your prayers and everything you as fellow
disciples of Jesus and members of his Body.

"Donde está tu tesoro...”
En caso de que no te hayas dado cuenta, el evangelio de San Lucas ha dado un giro el domingo pasado y hoy, un giro hacia el desafío de que abandonemos nuestra búsqueda de riqueza. A riesgo de repetirme cuando doy mi homilía este fin de semana, quiero pedirte que consid-eres seriamente a dónde Jesús nos quiere llevar en nuestra relación con él y con el dinero. Jesús comienza el texto del evangelio de hoy con palabras muy tranquilizadoras y reconfortantes: "No temas más, pequeño rebaño, porque tu Padre se complace en darte el reino" (Lucas 12:32). Luego presenta su programa de reforma económica. "Vende tus pertenencias y da limosnas". Esto llega justo después de contar la historia de un hombre rico que se felicitó por su éxito en la agricultura y planeaba construir graneros más grandes para almacenar sus productos para poder "comer, beber y divertirse" solo para morir y en-frentar el hecho de que estaba tan ocupado almacenando tesoros terrenales que no tenía tiempo para hacerse rico en lo que le importa a Dios.
Sin duda, Jesús sintió el miedo en los rostros de sus segui-dores. Comenzaban a darse cuenta de que su reino no los estaba llevando a la prosperidad material sino a algo com-pletamente opuesto. Tal vez pensaron, como nosotros, que el amor de Jesús por los pobres estaba dirigido a mejorar su situación. Al final, ¿no estamos todos esperan-do y trabajando por un mundo en el que todos tengan sufi-ciente? Creo que estamos en el lugar del evangelio de la semana pasada donde un hombre le pidió a Jesús que juzgara una disputa sobre lo que él sentía que era suyo. Hay mucho en los evangelios y en las enseñanzas de la iglesia acerca de cómo debemos construir una sociedad que sea justa y que provea a todos los necesitados, los más pobres no menos que los más ricos. Pero todo se re-duce a que cada persona experimente una conversión en el corazón, de mirarnos a nosotros mismos como el ob-jetivo de nuestras vidas, pero mirar a Dios y a los pasillos del cielo como de lo que se trata realmente la vida.
El evangelio de hoy establece el camino de la mayor-domía en el que Jesús nos pide que consideremos los bienes de la tierra como pertenecientes a Dios. Ya sea que usted herede bienes mundanos o los gane, no son suyos para hacer lo que quiera. "Se requerirá mucho de la perso-na encargada de mucho, y se exigirá aún más de la perso-na encargada de más".
En las misas de este fin de semana, haré un llamamiento a nuestros feligreses en San Juan Bautista para que nos ayuden a prepararnos para nuestro 150 aniversario en el 2021 contribuyendo a una campaña para recaudar una cantidad significativa de dinero, $700,000, para abordar la restauración y renovación de nuestra iglesia también
como algunas mejoras al edificio de nuestra escuela y al edificio del centro parroquial que proporciona espacio-para nuestra despensa de alimentos y alcance a las per-sonas sin hogar.
Los miembros registrados de San Juan Bautista recibirán de mí una carta y un folleto que describe el trabajo que se debe hacer para pintar el interior de nuestra iglesia, mejo-rar la iluminación, restaurar el altar y reemplazar el piso de la iglesia, como también para proporcionar una salida segura e instalaciones para las personas sin hogar en el antiguo convento. Desearía poder decirles que si quieren ayudar pueden desviar sus ofertas a este nuevo fondo. Tal no es el caso, ya que confiamos en el ofertorio semanal y mensual y en el Gran Colecta Anual para mantener nues-tros ministerios en funcionamiento y nuestras instala-ciones abiertas.
Entonces, honestamente, estoy pidiendo un regalo de sac-rificio, un compromiso serio con la belleza de nuestro espacio de adoración y, en una escala más pequeña pero significativa, con los espacios que usamos para los menos afortunados. Me complace compartir las noticias de este proyecto con nuestra familia de Santo Tomás para infor-marles sobre nuestros esfuerzos porque muchos de no-sotros adoramos juntos ahora y a veces nos echamos una mano a las buenas obras de los demás. Llegará el momen-to en que pediré ayuda financiera a la comunidad de San-to Thomas para agregar un nuevo sistema de HVAC que calentará y enfriará la iglesia allí de manera más eficiente y efectiva.

Este llamado a la mayordomía comienza con el desarrollo de una actitud de gratitud, una conciencia constante de cuánto nos han dado. Mire cuidadosamente lo que tiene y le han dado. Luego pregúntese qué puede devolver a Di-os, por su gloria y por el bien de los menos afortunados.

Caso você não tenha notado, o evangelho de São Lucas deu uma reviravolta no último domingo e hoje, uma vira-da para nos desafiar a desistir de nossa busca pela rique-za. Correndo o risco de me repetir quando dou minha homilia neste fim de semana, quero pedir-lhe que consid-ere seriamente onde Jesus quer nos levar em nosso rela-cionamento com ele e com o dinheiro. Jesus começa o texto do evangelho de hoje com palavras muito seguras e reconfortantes: "Não tenha mais medo, pequeno rebanho, porque seu Pai deseja dar-lhe o reino" (Lucas 12:32). Ele então estabelece seu programa de reforma econômica. "Venda seus pertences e dê esmolas." Isto vem logo de-pois que ele contou a história de um homem rico que se congratulou por seu sucesso na agricultura e estava planejando construir celeiros maiores para armazenar seus produtos para que ele pudesse "comer, beber e ser feliz" apenas para morrer e encarar o fato. que ele estava tão ocupado guardando tesouros terrestres que não tinha tempo de enriquecer no que é importante para Deus.
Sem dúvida, Jesus sentiu medo nos rostos de seus segui-dores. Eles estavam começando a perceber que seu reino não os levava à prosperidade material, mas a algo com-pletamente oposto. Talvez pensassem, como nós, que o amor de Jesus pelos pobres visava melhorar sua situação. No final, não estamos todos esperando e trabalhando por um mundo em que todos tenham o suficiente? Eu acho que nós estamos no lugar do evangelho da semana passa-da, onde um homem pediu a Jesus para julgar uma dispu-ta sobre o que ele achava que era dele. Há muito nos evangelhos e nos ensinamentos da igreja sobre como devemos construir uma sociedade justa e que propor-cione a todos os necessitados, aos mais humildes não menos que aos mais ricos. Mas isso se resume a cada pessoa passando por uma conversão no coração, desde olhar para nós mesmos como o objetivo de nossas vidas, mas olhando para Deus e para os salões do céu como o que realmente é a vida. O evangelho de hoje estabelece o caminho da Servidão em que Jesus nos pede para consid-erar os bens da terra como pertencentes a Deus. Se você herdar bens mundanos ou ganhá-los, eles não são seus para fazer o que quiserem. "Muito será exigido da pessoa a quem foi confiado muito, e ainda mais será exigido da pessoa encarregada de mais."
Nas missas neste fim de semana, eu estarei apelando aos nossos paroquianos na Saint John's para nos ajudar a preparar o nosso 150º aniversário em 2021, contribuindo para uma campanha para arrecadar uma quantia signifi-cativa de $ 700.000 para tratar da restauração e reno-vação de nossa igreja, também como algumas melhorias

Seu chamado não é apenas aos sacerdotes ou religiosos que renunciem a uma vida neste mundo. Je-sus nos chama a todos para sermos bons e fiéis serviçais de seus dons materiais e espirituais.
Este chamado para servidão começa com o desenvolvi-mento de uma atitude de gratidão, uma consciência per-manente de quanto nos foi dado. Olhe atentamente para o que você tem e foi dado. Então pergunte a si mesmo o que você pode devolver a Deus, por sua glória e pelo bem daqueles menos afortunados.

bicicleta, ir al circo, y ver el zoológico. Tenía ganas de celebrar la Navidad y recibir a Jesús

Decididamente, Jesus não Se cansa de chamar os seus discípu-los a uma vida de pobreza, no Evangelho deste domingo e do domingo passado. Mas Ele próprio sabia bem que o dinheiro é necessário para viver. O grupo dos apóstolos tinha uma bolsa comum. São Paulo fará um peditório, que dará uma grande soma, para a Igreja de Jerusalém. Segundo o Evangelho, a
pobreza não é a miséria. Já domingo passado Jesus nos convidava a
sermos ricos em vista de Deus e não a amealharmos para nós mesmos. Hoje, diz uma pequena frase muito esclarecedora:
“Não temas, pequenino rebanho, porque aprouve ao vosso Pai dar-vos o Reino”. O Pai quer encher-nos com a sua plenitude. Mas isso supõe, da nossa parte, uma atitude de despojamento
para nos tornarmos disponíveis e acolhedores do dom de Deus. Recordemos que somos apenas criaturas. Não somos a nossa própria origem. Desde o início da nossa existência, devemos primeiramente tudo receber, a começar pela vida. Numa pa-
lavra, devemos, em primeiro lugar, ser amados para podermos aprender a amar. A verdadeira pobreza consiste em reconhecer a ligação de dependência no amor e na vida. Se a recusamos,
fechamo-nos em nós mesmos, numa riqueza que poderá asfixiar-nos. Dito de outro
modo, somos convidados a nunca esquecer que tudo o que temos e somos é sempre, antes de mais, um dom. Não somos
proprietários da vida. Dela temos apenas usufruto. O nosso Pai confia-nos a vida, para que a
façamos frutificar em aventura de amor. Isso deveria preservar-nos do “espírito de possessão” e abrir o nosso coração para

Santa Clara, patrona da televisão
Santa Clara, destacou-se desde cedo pela caridade e
respeito para com os pequenos “Clara de nome, mais clara de vida e claríssima de virtudes!”
Neste dia, celebramos a memória da jovem inteligente e bela que se tornou a ‘dama
pobre’. Santa Clara nasceu em Assis
(Itália), no ano de 1193, e o interessante é que seu nome vem de uma inspiração dada a sua fervorosa mãe, a qual
[inspiração] lhe revelou que a filha haveria de iluminar o mun-do com sua santidade.
Pertencente a uma nobre família, destacou-se desde cedo pela sua caridade e respeito para com os pequenos, por isso, ao de-parar com a pobreza evangélica vivida por Francisco de Assis
apaixonou-se por esse estilo de vida. Em 1212, quando tinha apenas dezoito anos, a jovem aban-
donou o seu lar para seguir Jesus mais radicalmente. Para isso foi ao encontro de Francisco de Assis na Porciúncula e teve seus lindos cabelos cortados como sinal de entrega total ao
Cristo pobre, casto e obediente. Ao se dirigir para a igreja de São Damião, Clara – juntamente com outras moças – deu início
à Ordem, contemplativa e feminina, da Família Franciscana (Clarissas), da qual se tornou mãe e modelo, principalmente no longo tempo de enfermidade, período em que permaneceu em
paz e totalmente resignada à vontade divina. Nada podendo contra sua fé na Eucaristia, pôde ainda se levan-tar para expulsar – com o Santíssimo Sacramento – os mouros (homens violentos que desejavam invadir o Convento em As-
sis) e assistir, um ano antes de sua morte em 1253, a Cele-bração da Eucaristia, sem precisar sair de seu leito. Por essa razão é que a santa de hoje é aclamada como a “Patrona da
Televisão”. Santa Clara, rogai por nós!

When a teenager demanded that her parents treat her like an adult and not have so many rules to follow, they readily agreed. The next day, they presented her with a bill for rent, a list of items she needed to purchase, the list of chores she had to share and the insurance bill for her car. After looking over the list—the responsibilities of an adult—an early curfew on school nights did not seem so hard to follow. Adulthood and its ex-penses could wait a while longer!
Being prepared is more than just a motto for the Scouts. For most of us it is a way of life. We try to anticipate the future, setting goals and strategies to achieve them. This is true in our spiritual life. Our relationship with God grows and changes over time and sometimes He asks us to do what we might not think we can do. Responding to a parish need or working to solve a community problem might not be our plan. Many times, people will hesitate or say no when they are asked to teach CCD, to be part of a marriage prep program, to find a way to support a missionary or to respond to a natural disaster. But God calls us in His own time and when He knows we are ready. He does not call us to failure. Listen and pray and trust in God. Relax! God put the wiggle in children; do not feel you have to suppress it in God’s house.
All are welcome! Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is going on in the
sanctuary.
Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and the actions of the priest, altar servers, cantor, lector, etc. Children’s missals are available at the back of the church to help your little ones understand the order of the Mass.
Sing the hymns, pray and voice your responds loudly and clearly. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. Need to step out for a moment with your child during Mass? Please do so freely as needed. We have a children's corner with a rocker and kiddie's books. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me!”
To all Members of Our Parishes: Remember: the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond. Let them know that they can feel at home in God’s house. The presence of children is a gift to the Church. They are a reminder that our parish is growing. Your church is their church as well. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to them and to their parents.
