The Word of the Lord First Reading: Amos 6:1a, 4-7 Amos denounces the selfish attitude of those who surround themselves with luxuries with no concern for others. He goes on to warn that because these people lacked interest in the state of their society, they would be the first to be exiled.

Second Reading: 1 Timothy 6:11-16 Paul tells Timothy to seek integrity, faith and love. Paul urges him to attain everlasting life by maintaining strong faith in Jesus and in God until Jesus returns.

Gospel: Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells of a rich man who feasted daily, while a beggar named Lazarus went hungry outside his gates. When both men died, Lazarus was taken to Abraham, but the rich man was in torment. When he begged for mercy, Abraham reminded him that Lazarus had lived in torment, while the rich man lived in selfish luxury. The man then asked if Lazarus could be sent to his brothers to warn them. But Abraham said if they had not heeded Moses or the prophets, they would ignore even the warning of one risen from the dead.

ROSARY CONGRESS 2019

The Rosary Congress is a week long period of around the clock prayer consisting of

Perpetual Adoration and Hourly Rosary, offered in a spirit of reparation. We, St. John

the Apostle Parish, are joining with other parishes across the Archdiocese of Newark to

pray for the healing of our Church, our families and our nation.

Our parish is sponsoring a 24 hour period in the Main Church, beginning on

Wednesday, October 9th with the 7:00 pm Mass and ending on Thursday October 10th

with the 7:00 pm Mass. To commit to a particular hour and/or to

St. John’s Annual Communion Breakfast

St. John’s Rosary Altar Society will be holding its annual Communion Breakfast October 13,.2019. Mass will be 9:00 am St. John’s followed by a Buffet Breakfast at the Colonia Country Club. Fr. In the Magnificat prayer (Lk1:46-55), Mary prays: He has deposed the mighty from their thrones and raised the lowly to high places. The hungry he has given every good thing, while the rich he as sent empty away. Today’s parable of the rich man and Lazarus is another illustration of how God reverses the situations of the rich and the poor, as well as the the mighty and the lowly. The sin of the rich man was not in what he did to Lazarus, but what he failed to do. The rich man did not shout at or physically abuse Lazarus or had him arrested for trespassing. The sin of rich man was not in being rich, but in failing to use his riches to help people in need, like Lazarus, right at his front door! We remember Jesus words that whatever we do to the least of the brothers and sisters, we do unto Him. The prophet Amos also speaks about the complacency that could occur with riches and the result… Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock…drink wine from bowls and annoint themselves with the best of oils…now they shall be the first to go into exile… The prophet Amos lived at a time when Israel was thriving – economically, politically and militarily. The wealthy were living in extravagance, while the poor suffered. What were the consequences? The failure of the wealthy Israelities to help the poor would be the downfall of the nation. We must steer clear of the temptation to ignore those in need, especially those at our “front door”, i.e. in our neighborhood, parish, community etc. St. Paul in today’s reading from the first Letter to Timothy tells us how: But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience and gentleness. Let us remember that the “poor” can also be those who don’t know Jesus Christ, i.e. poor in love. Jesus has given us abundant love and mercy. May we share His love with all, especially those in need. Let’s start by

Bereavement Support Group There is a support group for those grieving the death of a loved one here at St. John the Apostle. The group provides a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. If you are interested in joining us, or if you would like more information about the group, time and location of the next meeting, contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or myork@sjanj.net. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Want to learn more about the Bible? Frank Tremmel from St. John the Apostle will be leading a series of six sessions, starting on October 1st, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM in the Teacher’s Lounge. The first session will focus on the Old Testament. The second session on November 5th will cover the New Testament. The sessions on December 3, January 7, February 4 and March 3 will cover the four pillars of the Catholic faith – faith, morality, sacraments and prayer, as outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE SCHOOL Inspiring Mind and Soul

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at St. John the Apostle! The summer of 2019 is behind us, and we are off and running to what promises to be an outstanding academic year. Each month we will provide an update on all the terrific things that are happening in our school, and so, in this September edition of School News, allow us to share all that is happening at St. John the Apostle School.

OPENING FESTIVITIES: The school year began on Thursday, September 5th. Our buildings were in meticulous condition thanks to a hard working custodial staff that worked tirelessly all summer long. We enjoyed a strong opening, celebrating Mass on each of the first two days. Our students and teachers were excited to get back to work. We have enjoyed a fine start. Attendance was outstanding at both our Grades 1 through 5 Back to School Night on September 19th as well as our Annex Back to School Night on September 24th. Parents could not help but walk away impressed with our curriculum and the emphasis we’ve placed on technology throughout all grades.

VIVA ITALIA: A great big Thank you to our Parent Faculty Guild, and especially chairperson Michelle Scaturro, for our successful Italian Night celebration on September 28th. Italian Night was our kickoff fundraiser for the 2019-2020 school year. All year long, the dedicated members of the PFG work to raise money for our school. Their efforts allow us to keep our tuition costs reasonable, and provide enjoyable and rewarding services for our students.

CURRICULUM AND TECHNOLOGY: In recent years we have greatly modified the way we deliver education to our students at St. John the Apostle. All of our standardized Map Growth Testing is done on line as we continue to adapt to the changing times. We are in the midst of a global technological evolution. We, in fact, are at the cutting edge of this evolution, preparing our students with real life skills that they can apply to life in the 21st century.

GRANT UPDATE: One of the reasons we are able to be so progressive at St. John’s is because of the assistance we receive from outside sources. The Dominican Sisters of Hope recently provided us with a grant of $15,000. This grant has enabled us to hire a reading specialist, yet another example of a service we are able to provide along with Catholic Education.

A LOOK AHEAD: We are now a month into the new school year, and October promises to be jam packed with activity. Our students will say the Living Rosary, in our newly paved parking lot, on Thursday, October 16th. We look forward to our annual Trunk or Treat celebration on Sunday, October 27th and of course we will conclude the month with our Halloween Parade on October 31st.

On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I would like to welcome all of our families back from what we hope was a restful and enjoyable summer. We are hard at work now and at St. John the Apostle, we take our work seriously. Our work is our mission…to deliver the finest Catholic Elementary School Education in all of Union County. Rest assured we are grateful of the opportunity to serve you.
