Reflection Today is Grandparents Day so give your grandparents a call. We are all grateful for the great love of grandparents for their grandchildren and what that teaches us about how God loves us. We are the apple of God’s eye. God pours out divine love for us and his mercy is never ending. Today in the Gospel Jesus reminds us we must act with God like compassion toward all. We are called to forgive others. We also celebrate the feast day of St. John Chrysostom (c.347-407): As we know, he was the “golden tongue”. He spoke moving words about God and about our faith life. In his homily #61,5 on St. Matthew’s Gospel he says “… we are to forgive not merely with the lips, but from the heart”. Sometimes that’s the hard part, isn’t it? Getting our heart to accept what our brain knows is right. But we try and we are indeed people of forgiveness. I have seen examples of this right here in our parish community. I have been blessed to know people of forgiveness. All is going well in our parish this past week. We are working on plans for the Fall. Eu-charistic Ministers will be back with the guidelines that keep us all safe. A schedule is now being developed so if you want to serve, please let me know. We are grateful to Pauline Sayers for making the schedule. I will be hosting a book discussion on Zoom on the book Parish Priest. This is a book about Father Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. He was the eldest of 13 children, six of whom died in infancy or childhood. His father worked as a molder in a Waterbury, Connecticut, brass mill. Michael attended the local Waterbury district school but left at 13 to work in the spoon-making department of one of the brass mills. My husband, Jack grew up in Watertown, CT right next door. See the announcement in this bulletin on how to join the discussion.

Pray the Rosary with Us We pray the rosary every Tuesday at 9 am in the backyard. If there is rain, we will meet in the Hall. Plan to join us Tuesday September 15.

This Week’s Gospel MT 18:21-35

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”

Please remember in prayers this week the family of

Jane Smith

who has recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Home School With the advent of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of the upcoming school year, many parents are discerning whether to switch to homeschooling If you're interested in learning more about homeschooling options for this fall, then visit the Home School Ministry page at h ps://www.bostoncatholic.org/lffps/ecclesial-movements/home-school , or contact RCAB Homeschool-ing Liaison and Spiritual Director, Fr. The Villagers of Roslindale There will be no further meetings of the Villagers for the remainder of the year. We will reassess and communicate with you early next year what our plans gong forward will be. God bless you all and stay safe. If you have any questions call Diane Grallo at 617-323-8654.

We welcomed back Fr. John Connolly as our new pastor - he is sincerely happy to be with us again. He;s reassured us that our parish is not closing! Going forward, this is an opportunity for all of us to share our resources, to strengthen and enhance the good works that we try to do in our community and for others. For those of us involved with the children’s programs, it’s a great time to develop new friendships and to explore new ideas that will keep our kids on the pathway that parents have already laid out. We want and need our children to be caring, loving and aware of those who are less fortunate than they are. We want to create possibilities for them to reach out and help out when they see a need. Fr. Connolly has a vision for all our young people; that those who call the Parkway/West Roxbury churches their spiritual homes will unite as one community to care for each other. We at St John’s have a longstanding history of outreach. During the past five years we have partnered with the St. Vincent DePaul Society to provide meals and gifts for 70 families in need. This project has involved all of the children in our program from the high schoolers to the elementary students. We look forward to continuing to offer opportunities that will inspire our children to become involved and to be part of the solution. It will take the efforts of all of us to discover creative ways to respond with compassion and open hands, most especially during this trying time. Some students have gone back to school in the classroom, with a hybrid model or are studying virtually at home. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of our families. The pressure and responsibility of parenting today is overwhelming, and we appreciate the stress that these next few weeks will put on everyone teachers, parents and students. Recognizing that this is a difficult time, we will delay the start of our Faith Formation Program until later this fall. Check our website for updates and I will be in contact with you through email as well. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns at [email protected]. Stay well!

Book Discussion On Wednesday Oct 21 from 7-8 pm on Zoom, Mary will lead a discussion of the book Parish Priest. Father Michael McGivney (1852-1890), the son of Irish immigrants, was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and was ordained a priest in 1877 for what is now the Archdiocese of Hartford. He founded the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary's Parish in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1882. He will be

beatified Oct 31. He is the first American parish priest to be beatified. Drive in Movie Saint Theresa Parking Lot

LA LA LAND Summer may have slipped away, but there is still one more chance for a drive-in movie. On Saturday night, September 19, in St. Theresa of Avila's parking lot, JP Movie Night will present “La La Land,” which picked up six Oscars in 2016 (though not Best Film, check out the Oscar Night goof!). “La La Land” is great entertainment. It’s a musical! It’s a romance, it’s a drama. It’s a classic tale of two young people trying to make it in LA, with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling offering up not just great chemistry, but old school singing and dancing too. Special thanks to Maria’s Kitchen of West Roxbury for supporting this next drive-in. We encourage everyone to buy a takeout meal from Maria’s Kitchen, 1829 Centre Street, and bring it to the show. Space is limited, so get your tickets soon! Cost is $40, per car (not per person), so bring a friend or two! Here’s the link: h ps://www.eventbrite.com/e/jp-movie-night-drive-in-lala-land- ckets117995944045 Stay well, and hope to see you at the movies!

Project Cookie Dough Update Although the past several months have been on hold, your patience throughout this unusual ordeal has been very much appreciated. While we are not yet in a position to revive Project Cookie Dough, we have not forgotten your commitment to those less fortunate. We will let you know when we are able to once again safely accept and deliver your homemade cookies. If you have any questions, please contact Donna O’Connor at 617-524-4396. Thank you!

Why Saint John Chrysostom? The story of how the parish was named is interesting. On Tuesday, November 6, 1951, Archbishop Cushing welcomed to Boston Armenian Cardinal Gregory Peter XV Agagianian as he began his first visit to the United States. A native of Russia and a brilliant scholar, the Cardinal had an impressive background in Rome as student teacher and seminary lecturer. He was elected to the Patriarchate of Cilicia of the Armenians in 1937 and named Cardinal in 1947. He toured the nation’s cities and returned to Boston in 1952. Archbishop Cushing informed the Cardinal a new parish had been established in Boston and offered him the opportunity to name this new parish in honor of his visit. Cardinal Agagianian replied “Saint John Chrysostom”.
