July 5, 2020: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God Bless America!

On July 4th, we celebrate the 244th year as the United States of America. Many of us will certainly remember this year for many years to come due to the pandemic outbreak. They

say that hindsight is always 20/20. I do not know if it is ironic or not, but this is the year 2020. Nevertheless, as we rest and gather around for cookouts with our family and loved ones on our country’s Independence Day, we give thanks to God for so many things He

has given to our country. We give Thanks to God for all the men and women who served and are serving our country. We give Thanks to God for the ability to worship the Lord in our Church again. We give Thanks to God for our collaborative Readiness Task Force,

volunteers, Knight of Columbus (they are the right hand of the Church) and so many generous parishioners who continually contribute to our Church. The Catholic Weymouth Collaborative always rises on many occasions and challenges. Once again, during COVID-

19, we rise as a collaborative to Reopen our Churches. “How can I repay the LORD for all the great good done for me? I will raise the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.” Psalm 116:13 God Bless America!

Many Prayers and Blessings! In Christ, Fr. Huy

Forming in Faith...

“And behold I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

When the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, why do they still look and taste like bread and wine?

In the celebration of the Eucharist, the glorified Christ becomes present under the appearances of bread and wine in a way that is unique, a way that is uniquely suited to the Eucharist. In the Church's traditional

theological language, in the act of consecration during the Eucharist the “substance” of the bread and wine is changed by the power of the Holy Spirit into the “substance” of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the “accidents” or appearances of bread and wine remain. “Substance” and “accident” are here used as philosophical terms that have been adapted by great medieval theologians such as St. Thomas Aquinas in

their efforts to understand and explain the faith. Such terms are used to convey the fact that what appears to be bread and wine in every way (at the level of “accidents” or physical attributes - that is, what can be seen, touched, tasted, or measured) in fact is now the Body and Blood of Christ (at the level of “substance” or

deepest reality). This change at the level of substance from bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is called “transubstantiation.” According to Catholic faith, we can speak of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist because this transubstantiation has occurred (cf. Catechism, no. 1376). This is a great mystery of our

faith—we can only know it from Christ’s teaching given us in the Scriptures and in the Tradition of the Church. Every other change that occurs in the world involves a change in accidents or characteristics. Sometimes the accidents change while the substance remains the same. For example, when a child reaches

adulthood, the characteristics of the human person change in many ways, but the adult remains the same person—the same substance. At other times, the substance and the accidents both change. For example, when a person eats an apple, the apple is incorporated into the body of that person—is changed into the body of that

person. When this change of substance occurs, however, the accidents or characteristics of the apple do not remain. As the apple is changed into the body of the person, it takes on the accidents or characteristics of the body of that person. Christ’s presence in the Eucharist is unique in that, even though the consecrated bread and

wine truly are in substance the Body and Blood of Christ, they have none of the accidents or characteristics of a human body, but only those of bread and wine.

Interested In Becoming a Catholic? or Continuing your Faith Journey

Begun at Baptism?

If you are interested in learning more about our beautiful faith, please contact Mary Ellen Cassani, our Adult Faith Formation director at 781-337-0380 or email [email protected] and she will answer any questions you may have.

In brief, the process engages you in learning certain aspects of the faith such as the Creed, prayer, the seven sacraments and the moral life, but it is also tailored to meet your individual questions, interests and needs during the journey. The instructional process typically begins in late summer/fall and ends with Easter, but

this timetable can also reflect individual needs. Please inquire into this amazing journey!

Collaborative News and Events...

Readings: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading: Thus says the LORD: Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass, on a colt, the foal of an ass. He

shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem; the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Responsorial Psalm: I will praise your name for ever, my king and my God.

Second Reading: Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the

Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the

Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Gospel: At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you

have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”
