Honoring Fathers

Parenthood is not about competition. That is why motherhood and fatherhood are best understood and appreciated together, complementing each other. Stereotypically, when a mother holds her baby, she is a “Madonna.” When a father holds the same baby, he cradles it like a football. I said that was stereotypical; for there are notable exceptions -- fathers can look like St. Joseph or St. Anthony. I do think popular entertainment has done much to trivialize fatherhood and make what was once a high adventure into a comedy. Wordsworth the poet came before the “change” from reverence and respect to low humor. He is credited with these lines:

“Father! To God himself we cannot give a holier name.”

We’ve come a long way from “Honor they father”… to have a laugh at his expense. Many of us have seen Life with Father. It was a successful Broadway play, a charming film that featured a teenaged Elizabeth Tay-lor, and an equally engaging television series in the early 1950’s. This Clarence Day memoir of his father shows the “old man” as opinionated, blustering, and easily outmaneuvered by the light-headed logic of his wife Lavinia and their red-haired brood. Father is a “free-thinker” who finds himself an unwilling, but re-signed, candidate for his long-delayed Baptism! His thunderous “e-gads” and “confound-its” were too tame for John Barrymore, who played the role late in his career. My own father, who saw Barrymore in the Chicago production of Life with Father, told me the “great profile” substituted hard-core profanity to spice things up! His inspiration was not Clarence Day, but Bourbon! Life with Father began a trend. On the “big screen,” Spencer Tracy was brilliant as the “dumb” dad in Father of the Bride. He shows us that common sense is no defense against the strategies and wiles of loved ones driven by an “American Dream” -- like the perfect wedding! You can’t help loving this dad a little even when you laugh at him. Countless television shows have portrayed fathers as pushovers and dupes. Father Knows Best allowed dad to keep a little dignity with his comfy tweed jacket and

“presidential style” at family meetings. Father didn’t always know best, but Bud, Betty, Kathy and especially wife Margaret let him think he did. That’s the way it was with the Andersons, and the Cleavers, and even the retro Waltons. More contemporary situation comedies have stripped away the veneer of normalcy from the American fam-ily and left FATHER the “Joker” in a card game that doesn’t need one and need I say anything about Archie Bunker? Perhaps another article? I write this in the hope that our families do NOT re-semble such fictional, media caricatures about FATHERHOOD. On this day, when we are supposed to honor our Fa-thers, let’s do more than buy dad a tie, make jokes about his barbequing or his absolute hold on the T.V. remote. Honor your fathers by listening to them, valu-ing their hard work, and praying for them. “Fatherhood” has a profound significance. Let the me-dia continue to do its worst. The true meaning of Fa-ther’s Day is confirmed by our human experience. Continue to experience or remember the life-giving, life-sustaining, and life-ennobling relationship that reflects God’s love for us, His children! Fatherhood!

The 2013 Mass Book is now available.

Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or

special intentions may do so. Please note:

We will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass.

According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted.

What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individ-ual intentions.

ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A

BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. Your name and intention will be listed in the Bulletin. The cost of a flower arrangement will be $50.00. Altar Flowers are available beginning this weekend through Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd. Dates fill up quickly, so please book well in advance. Please call the Rectory at 847-967-1060 to arrange a date and make your remembrance special!

Thank You!

On behalf of the Women’s Club, we would like to say thank you to all who have supported our fund-raisers this year. To name all the events would take forever, but a few were: Carson Days, Pasta Dinner, Bake Sale, Wine Tasting, Egg & Pepper Sandwiches, and Card & Bunco. With all your generosity to these fundraisers, the Women’s Club presented Father Luczak with a check for $9,000 at our Entrustment Mass and Dinner for the Parish. Again, thank you to all who have made this possible.

On Sunday, June 24 at 3:00PM in the church, our youth choir, teen choir and adult choir, joined by professional musicians from the Chicago area will present a performance of the "Song of Mark" written by Marty Haugen. This musical is unlike any you have seen before. It is deeply spiritual and moving, while bringing life and humor and beauty to the words of the Gospel of Mark through music. There is no cost to attend the performance.

An offering will be taken up after the show to benefit Mercy Home in Chicago. All professional musicians are donating their time to this worthy cause. Please save the date and plan on coming!

It is an experience you will never forget!

Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have chil-dren with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss available options. Come and Listen To This Story! The musical Song of Mark was written by Marty Haugen to bring the Gospel of Mark to life. The music ministry of St. Isaac Jogues, under the direction of Lisa Hall, will present this entertaining and prayerful musical on Sunday, June 24 at 3:00pm in the church. Our youth choir, teen choir, adult choir and guest musicians are working together to bring the gift of music to you, while bringing the gift of heal-ing to young people in need. An offering will be taken after the performance to benefit the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. Come to laugh, to cry and to share the wonderful experience which is the Song of Mark.

FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is conducting a “Fortnight for Freedom” beginning this Thursday, June 21 (the vigil of the feasts of St. Thomas More and St. John Fischer) and culminating with Independence Day, July 4. The purpose of this effort is to issue a nationwide call to defend religious liberty and to urge the baptized to work to protect the first freedom of the Bill of Rights. The Bishops hope this effort will not only provide a forum for action about these issues but also influence other issues pending in Springfield and Washington. The Illinois bishops’ contribution to the “Fortnight for Freedom” is to launch the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network (I-CAN). Next weekend, June 23-24, you will have the opportunity to join I-CAN by providing your email address to the Catholic Conference of Illinois, the voice of the Church at the state capitol, so that you can receive updates on state and federal issues/legislation affecting the Church. On the card you will also be asked for your home address (so they know the legislative district in which you live), your diocese (Chicago) and the name of the parish. We strongly encour-age you to give prayerful consideration to joining I-CAN. It is one way to respond to the call of the Gospel which re-minds us that responsible citizenship is a virtue and participation in the political life is a moral obligation. This obliga-tion is rooted in our baptismal commitment to follow Jesus Christ and to bear Christian witness in all we do. Here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish we will offer opportunities for prayer, learning and action during the two-week period. At daily and weekend Masses we will pray the “Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty” at the end of our inter-cessions; a 14-day booklet with readings and questions is available at the doors of the church today; materials and websites will be listed in the bulletin. Evening offerings, beginning at 7 p.m. will fill the weekday evenings. While some details are still being worked out, the schedule is as follows:

June 21 Holy Hour & Benediction June 22 Divine Mercy Chaplet & Rosary June 23 I-CAN Sign up after Masses; no evening event June 24 I-CAN Sign up after Masses; no evening event June 25 Prayer Service June 26 Speaker: Mr. Peter Breen, Executive Director of the Thomas More Society June 27 Mass in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help June 28 Holy Hour & Benediction June 29 Divine Mercy Chaplet & Rosary June 30 Prayer during Mass; I-CAN Sign up in HFR; no evening event July 1 Prayer during Mass; I-CAN Sign up in HFR; no evening event July 2 Taize style Prayer July 3 Showing of “A Man For All Seasons” and/or fortnight discussion July 4 Independence Day Mass, 9:00 a.m., Church; Possible parish representation in Niles July 4th Parade

If you cannot be part of the above events, here are Scripture verses to ponder and actions to take during the first week of the Fortnight for Freedom:

June 21: “The Lord is my shepherd, whom shall I fear?” Ps. 23:1 There are many who want you to fear. Be not afraid! June 22: “In hope we were saved.” Romans 8:24 Many voices foster discouragement about the church’s role in the world. Live today in hope! June 23: “For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?” Mt. 5:43-48 Love an enemy today. June 24: “…where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” II Cor. 3:17 Pray for those around the world without liberties. June 25: “…cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God.” II Cor. 4:15 Give thanks to God today for the freedom we have. June 26: “…whatever you did for one of these least…” Mt. 25:31-46 Perform a corporal work of mercy today. June 27: “Go out…and invite to the feast whomever you find.” Mt. 22:9

Invite someone to Mass with you this Sunday.

A Father’s Strength

A father’s pain Is hard to fathom

Like an old phantom

You see in his eyes A future still unfolding

Doubts and fears scolding

In his strength lies the hope That of an old elm tree

Standing ever tall to see

SPIRITUAL LIFE

THANK YOU To God be the glory! Last Sunday, made interesting and a bit challenging by heat and strong winds, our parish community gave witness to our faith and love of Jesus Christ, truly present in His Body and Blood, through the Corpus Christi Procession. Happily we welcomed members of our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, who came to pray and celebrate with us, along with many parishioners, family members and friends. It would be difficult to name all the people who helped make this day one of praise and wor-ship, joy and beauty, but it is very easy to express our deep and sincere gratitude for the many ways people helped make this event so special. Thank you to the Clergy, Liturgy Board, Music Ministry, Main-tenance Staff, Parish Life Commission, Paderewski Polish School, Fil-Am parishioners, Italian parishion-ers, Sharing Parish, First Communicants, liturgical ministers, RE support staff, joined by members of our Sharing Parish Maternity BVM, and those who provided for and served at the luncheon. God bless you as we continue to reflect His Eucharistic Presence in the world!

BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put peo-ple’s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give per-mission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person’s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
