“Seek Good, Not Evil” Amos 5:14

A Meditation from Pope Francis Why are you afraid? Have you no faith? Dear brothers and sisters, from this place that tells of Peter’s rock-solid faith, I would like this evening to entrust all of you to the Lord, through the intercession of Mary, Salvation of the people and Star of the stormy sea. From this colonnade that embraces Rome and the whole world, may God’s blessing come down upon you as a consoling embrace. Lord, may you bless the world, give health to our bodies and comfort to our hearts. You ask us not to be afraid. Yet our faith is weak and we are fearful. But, Lord, do not leave us at the mercy of the storm. Tell us again; “Do not be afraid” (Mt 28:5). And we, together with Peter, “will cast all our anxieties onto you, for you care about us? (cf. 1Pet 5:7)

DO NOT BE AFRAID Rumor and tradition tells us that the phrase do not be afraid appears in the bible 365 times! Whether or not it actually does appear this many times, it still offers us hope, strength and courage when we are in doubt or struggling in any way. Fear is part of our own daily lives. We are afraid of many things; failure, death, violence, the rise of terrorism and religious intolerance in our world and in our country.

Each of us is called by name by God. We are called to be examples and witnesses of Jesus in our world today. In the gospel, Jesus asks us to declare ourselves for him in the presence of others. At times this can be difficult and challenging. The values of the gospel are often and generally not the values of the world. Through the quality of our daily lives and how we behave, we are to be the real and credible witnesses to Jesus and his gospel. We won’t be left on our own, Jesus will be with us. As Mary and Joseph were called and encouraged, so too will we with the words, ‘do not be afraid.’

Let us not be afraid of what is being asked of us. Let us not be paralyzed by our fear. Instead, let the words of Pope Francis encourage us, ‘go out again and again, without fear and proclaim the good news which is for all people’.

Prayer for Canada Day Eternal God, whose reign extends from sea to sea and whose care endures throughout the ages, hear our prayers for our country: grant wisdom to those who govern it and respect for human life and dignity to every citizen, so that justice may flourish and all peoples live in unity and peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
