2 Welcome to St. Clare Catholic Church
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
September is the month dedicated to the Sorrows
of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“Then Simeon blessed them and said to
his mother Mary, “This child is destined for
the falling and the rising of many in Israel,
and to be a sign that will be opposed so
that the inner thoughts of many will be
revealed—and a sword will pierce your
own soul too.” Luke 2:34-35
Our Lady has three feasts during the month of
September, her birthday or nativity on the 8th, the
feast of her Holy Name on the 12th and the feast of
her Sorrows on the 15th. As the liturgical year
unfolds and we see the birth, life, passion, death
and glorious Resurrection of Our Lord unfold with it,
so too in a subordinate way our Lady’s birth, life,
sufferings, and finally her glorious Assumption
unfold as well. She was the ever-faithful virgin and
mother, always participating to the fullest in the
redemptive work of Our Lord. Her feasts are a
reminder and a challenge to all Christians to follow
Our Lord in all things even to death if necessary,
knowing that there awaits a glorious reward for
those who are faithful.
On the 29th of this month we celebrate the feast
of the three archangels, Michael, Gabriel and
Raphael. Though all three are noble and worthy
of our veneration St. Michael is perhaps most
appropriate to remember this month when we
have witnessed so many scandals and attacks on
the holiness of our beloved Catholic Church.
St. Michael was the one appointed by God to hurl
Satan and his fallen angels out of heaven and
into the darkness of hell. He is the protector of the
Church and it would be good for us to beg his
powerful protection for our church now in these
troubled days. We already pray the St. Michael
prayer after Mass during the week, but we should
remember to pray it at home too, and often.
St. Michael has power to thrust the demons
plaguing the church away from her again.
United with Our Lady, who has been empowered
to crush Satan’s head with her heal, St. Michael is
needed now, in a very urgent way, to protect the
little flock of the Lord.
We know how the story ends because of Our
Lady’s words at Fatima, “In the end, my
Immaculate Heart will triumph,” but the getting
there can be rough. Let us renew our confidence
in Our Lady’s words and in St. Michael’s interces-
sion. In spite of the scandals, God is still so good
to us…
Have a blessed week,
Fr. Kunz
PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the
wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly
pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking
the ruin of souls. Amen.
Three months after the September 11, 2001, attack on the United States,
President George W. Bush signed into law a bill designating September 11
as Patriot Day.
Flags are flown at half-staff throughout the country, and a moment of
silence is observed at 8:46 am Eastern time, the minute the first plane
struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.

“ Did not God choose those who are
poor in the world to be rich in faith and
heirs of the kingdom that he promised
to those who love him? “
- JAMES 2:5
What is more important — being rich in
faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches
us that possessions are most important.
God teaches a different lesson. When we
are rich in faith, we keep God first in all
things and realize that material things really
don’t matter and that it’s more important
to share with those who have less.
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
We often associate the word "healing" with
something that produces dramatic, physical
results: the blind see, the crippled walk, and the
deaf hear. Witnessing such miraculous events
is few and far between for most. Healing
happens more frequently in very ordinary ways
using very ordinary means. And we can all be
God's instruments for bringing it about. Kindness,
love, mercy, and compassion can go a very
long way. Treating people with kindness ? being
inclusive and welcoming of the poor, the weak,
and the powerless ? listening to another's story
and pain ? offering compassion and love to
those who have wronged us ? avoiding hurtful
criticisms and watching our tongues. All can go
a long way to changing and healing human
hearts. There is power in love and kindness.
Does this power not speak of someone greater
than ourselves working in and through us?
