“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

— Galatians 6:14

Saint Charles Parish San Diego / Imperial Beach Page Two

From the Pastor At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. – Luke 10:1-2 In today’s gospel passage Jesus elects 72 disciples, anoints them with power from on high, and sends them out to prepare the people for his coming. This is a foretaste of the work he would do after his resurrection when he would send out his apostles as ordained ministers of the gospel. The very first bishops of the Church. These men, their successors and coworkers, were, and continue to be, the men who offer Mass for us, hear our confessions, anoint the sick, preside at weddings and funerals, etc. They are the ones God has chosen as me-diators of grace between Heaven and Earth. Priests of God they are means of the extraordinary graces we re-ceive in the Sacraments. And we need more of them! Today in the Diocese of San Diego we have some 98 parishes, 13 mission churches and 92 schools from pre-k to college that serve more than a million Catholics in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Not counting priests from other dioceses and religious orders there are 98 diocesan priests on assignment here in San Diego. That’s one diocesan priest for every 10,204 Catholics! It is difficult at times to meet the needs of the people who are seeking the sacraments that only God’s priests can offer. And so, I’m asking you, God is asking you, to pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Below is a prayer for vocation which I hope you’ll pray daily. In addition, as parents, friends, and teachers, I would ask that you also do your part in encouraging young men to consider a vocation to the priesthood. Those of you with boys in the house have the great calling of forming these men in the practice of the faith, helping to discern where God calls them to serve, whether it be in the single, married, or ordained life. If you know someone whom you think might make a good a priest please talk to them about it and encourage them to speak with a priest about their calling. And please, ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest each day. O God, Father of all Mercies, Provider of a bountiful Harvest, send Your Graces upon those You have called to gather the fruits of Your labor; preserve and strengthen them in their lifelong service of you. Open the hearts of Your children that they may discern Your Holy Will; inspire in them a love and desire to surrender themselves to serving others in the name of Your son, Jesus Christ. Teach all Your faithful to follow their respective paths in life guided by Your Divine Word and Truth. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, all the Angels, and Saints, humbly hear our prayers and grant Your Church's needs, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
