CEMETERY REMINDER

As per my recent “pastor’s article” I remind you that the gates to the parish cemetery will

be closed on Sundays during July and Au-gust to prevent our cemetery from becoming a parking lot as a result of activities at Parks Lake. Also, a new sign with revised regula-

tions for the parish cemetery has been installed. Everyone is asked to familiarize themselves with the regulations which help to maintain our cemetery as a holy and safe place. The regula-

tions will go into effect with Labor Day. – Father Zig

missed receiving Eucharist or Confirma-tion. Consecutive RCIA Lessons will be held at 9 am for children with their parents and at 11:45

am for adults on Sunday in the St. Cecilia Office building starting October 4. Consecutive RCIA lessons will be held

at 3:15 pm on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church Hall starting October 3. For further information send email to Rock-

Care to help distribute extra food from those who “have” to those who “have not?”

For almost 10 years, parishioners from St. Cecilia ac-cept bread donations from a local restaurant and distribute it to the needy. Currently, there is a need for pick-up at closing on Friday night (10:30 PM) and distribution the next day, Saturday morning (9AM) to a location near the Trade Zone. If you could help even for a few weeks or have any questions, please call (973-625-3589.) Thank you!

On June 30, 2015, the feast of the Christians martyred under Nero in 64 A.D., our Holy Father, Pope Francis, remarked that there are more persecuted Christians in the world today than there were in the first centuries. Each month 180 Christians are being martyred. These sad statistics bear witness to the fact that Christians are among the most persecuted religious groups worldwide. In more than 60 countries, over 200 million Christians are be-ing denied their fundamental rights. In 41 of those countries, Islamic extremists are barbarically beheading, crucifying and killing men, women, young people and children. Tragically, in those areas of the world where Christianity once began, the Christian community is being wiped off the map. Islamic ji-hadists do not limit their violence to Christians alone. They spare no religious group, even killing those of their own Mus-lim faith. The Pope has urged us to pray for an increased awareness of the "drama of persecuted Christians in our day," for religious freedom as an "inalienable human right" and for the "end to this unacceptable crime." In response to our Holy Father's ur-gent request and united with him in concern for all those suf-fering religious persecution, our Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli is designating this August as a diocesan-wide Month of Prayer for Those Suffering Religious Persecution. After all daily masses in August we will pray the following prayer:

Good and gracious Father, whose own Beloved Son suffered violence and death for the salvation of the world, listen gra-ciously to our cry for all who are being persecuted for their faith. In your great mercy, comfort them with the Holy Spirit. Give them strength in the face of hostility and courage in theface of trial. Open the eyes of those who raise their hands in violence to see others as their brothers and sisters, children of the one Father of all. By your grace, turn their hearts from hatred to love. Through the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Queen of Peace, may justice and peace prevail so that all may have the freedom to worship you, the one true God and him whom you have sent, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

We ask you to use this prayer and pray for Those Suffering Religious Persecution with your families at your homes.

Every Friday in Sacred Heart of Jesus parish at 3pm Divine Mercy Chaplet will be offered in the intention for Those

Suffering Religious Persecution. Please join us!!!

Our persecuted brothers and sisters need our prayer.

millions were killed or imprisoned in Soviet labor camps, and ends with post-communist era efforts to revive the Catholic Church in the Russian Far East. Parishioner Comments Sister Maria Stella gave a beautiful narration on the history of the persecution of Catholics and their Faith in Russia. It was very interesting, and it compels me to want to learn more.

580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, Today is the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Gospel reading for this day continues from John, chapter 6, the “Bread of Life Discourse.” This chapter opens with the miracle (sign) of the

multiplication of bread and fish to feed the vast crowd which followed the Lord Jesus. This sign becomes the setting from which Jesus instructs His followers regarding the giving of Himself as “Bread from Heaven” which brings eternal life. Today’s Responsorial Psalm quotes the Lord Jesus (John 6:51)”I am the living bread that came down from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” The Sundays of August provide a pastoral opportunity for the praying assembly to reflect on the meaning of the Holy Eucharist. We refer to the Precious Body and Blood of Christ by a variety of names: the Most Blessed Sacrament, Holy Communion, Bread of Angels, Bread of Life, Precious Blood, and Sacrament of the Altar. When Holy Communion is given to someone near death it is called Viaticum, Latin for “on the way” or “for the journey.” Names and titles are important because they convey what we understand or believe. Like the Early Christians, Catholics have always spoken in theological language regarding the Eucharist and still do. We are very careful in how we speak regarding Holy Communion. We never say that we are going to get “the bread,” or that we are going to get a sip of “wine.” Talk such as this is plain WRONG! When we speak like this it shows a misunderstanding of the faith and a false representation of what has been handed down to us from the Apostles. Not only should we speak correctly regarding the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar but we must also remember how to ap-proach the Eucharist. The Church uses the term, “properly disposed” regarding how we are to present ourselves for Holy Com-munion. This term means that: we are not in the state of grave sin; fasted from food and drink 1 hour before the start of Holy Mass; and made a prayer of preparation for the reception of Holy Communion. With these conditions being met we are then dis-posed to receive the Eucharist. Printed on the inside cover of the pew missal is a statement produced in 1996 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bish-ops entitled, “Guidelines For The Reception Of Communion.” The statement clearly says that the reception of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church is for members of the Catholic Church with some exceptions. Like-wise, Catholics should not receive communion in non Catholic Churches. Apostolic succes-sion and unity in faith are matters that are associated with communion. In the celebration of the Eucharistic liturgy the use of vestments and linens is important. My sincere thanks to the “Mass linens laundry team” headed by Deidre Zink who, in addition to the linen duties, recently laundered the altar server robes. Thank you: Catherine Haynes, Pattie Fitzgerald, Rose Marie Hester, Florence Guarducci, Louise Naclerio and Peg Whalen. May God richly bless you! And may God bless all of you too! Father Zig

ST. ROMANUS, Martyr August 9

This Saint is an unknown Roman martyr whose cult was non-existent in the Church until the 12th century. His legendary acts tells us that St. Romanus was a soldier in Rome at the time when St. Lawrence had been imprisoned for his refusal to surrender the treasury of the roman church to the Empire. As he beheld the endurance and fortitude of St. Lawrence during his persecution and mar-veled at his virtuous courage and heroic patience, St. Romanus was so inspired that he approached the holy martyr and asked to be received into the Faith. St. Lawrence first gave the necessary instructions to St. Romanus and then he baptized him in the prison. This bracve roman soldier then publicly proclaimed his conversion to Christianity to his fellow-soldiers, and he was im-mediately arrested and convicted. St. Romanus thereupon achieved the crown of martyrdom by being beheaded on August 9, 258, the day before the execution of St. Lawrence. PRAYER: Almighty and ever-living God, graciously pour our Your Spirit upon us. Let our hearts be filled with that true love which enabled Your holy Martyr Romanus to overcome all bodily torments. Amen
