SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptismal Class is held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the parish office. The next class is Monday, July 17th. To register for the class, please call 973-627-0313 . Both parents are encouraged to attend the class before the birth of the baby. The Sacrament of Bap-tism is administered weekly at the 12:15 pm Mass and a Baptismal Ceremony at 1:30 pm. Families are required to be active, contributing parishioners of St. Cecilia’s Parish for 2 months prior to the child’s baptism date.
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Arrangements are to be made at least ONE YEAR in ad-vance. The date should not be set until the priest has been consulted.

WALKING PILGRIMAGE TO DOYLESTOWN The
annual walking pilgrimage to the National Shrine of Our
Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania will
begin on August 11th from Saints Peter and Paul Church
in Great Meadows, New Jersey. Pilgrims journey in
prayer and song traveling 60 miles in the course of 4 days

2018 TRIP TO IRELAND – Father Zig will be lead-
ing a trip to Ireland next spring through Collette Tours,

OUR NEWEST PRIEST – I am happy to welcome
to our two parishes, FATHER CERILO JAVINEZ, a
newly ordained priest as parochial vicar at Sacred
Heart of Jesus and Saint Cecilia Churches. Father
Cerilo is originally from the Philippines and recently
graduated from Immaculate Conception Seminary at
Seton Hall University in South Orange. Father Cer-

The Living Crown of Mary – One photograph is all that it takes for

The Diocese of Paterson will be hosting the
2017 Pilgrimage this October to the National
Shrine, The Basilica of the Immaculate Concep-
tion in Washington D.C.. on October 20 & 21,
2017. The trip includes transportation, two meals
including the banquet, overnight accommoda-
tions at the Westin Hotel in Virginia, and spiri-
tual visits to America’s Frist Cathedral, and St.
Jude Shrine in Baltimore, and the National Shrine
of the Immaculate conception. Included will be
daily Masses for Friday and Saturday Confession,
devotional time, and a lot more. We ask parish-

SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day
weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-
tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and
will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A
“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the
ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-
barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a
statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the
words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave
of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he
who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John
11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is
the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church
states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-
parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left
side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One
may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place
and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price
for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks. For

CEMETERY MEETING – A meeting of the Saint
Cecilia Cemetery Beautification Committee will take
place on Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. in the parish ceme-
tery. In the event of inclement weather the meeting will
take place in the parish office.

has been tempted to mistrust the love that God the Father has for us. Scripture scholar
Dr. Tim Gray takes us on a journey that ad-dresses the pervasive misconceptions that God is quick to anger, that the God of the Old
and New Testaments are different, and that God doesn’t have a merciful heart for us. You

St. Mary, whom Jesus converted, and who witnessed His last moments with Mary, His Mother, and St. John, was called Mag-dalene from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Clement of Alexandria and others identify her with the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears. Others regard her as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She followed Jesus with other devout women during His Public Life. After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene and then to His Apostles.
It is an ancient tradition in Provence, France, that St. Mary Magdalene or Mary the sister of Lazarus, together with Lazarus, Martha, and some other disciples of our Lord, being expelled by the Jews, put to sea and landed at Marseilles; and that St. Lazarus became the first Bishop of that See.
The feast of St. Mary Magdalene is celebrated by the Greeks as well as the Latins on this date. However, in the instructions given with the latest edition of the Roman Calendar, the Latin Church has stipulated that the feast is solely that of the woman to whom Christ appeared and not that of the sister of Lazarus or the penitent woman.
PRAYER God, it was to St. Mary Magdalene before all others that Your Son committed the message of Easter joy. Through her intercession may we one day contemplate Him reigning in glory. Amen.

St. Mary Magdalene
July 22nd
My Dear Parishioners,
Today is the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. We assemble together to observe the Lord’s Day as we celebrate the Eucharist in
which Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection are recalled. The Scriptures for this day speak of the seed which the Lord sows
upon the earth. This seed is the word of God. In the Gospel Acclamation we sing, “The seed is the word of God, Christ is the
sower. All who come to him will have life forever.” The parable of the sower is the centerpiece for today’s Scriptures which ad-
dresses the receptivity of the seed that is God’s word.
The first part of the Holy Mass is called, the Liturgy of the Word. In this part the Sacred Scriptures are proclaimed, sung , prayed
and explained. In the Liturgy of the Word God speaks to us and invites us into a dialogue with Him through prayer. God’s word
rouses the heart providing us with encouragement, consolation, motivation, reflection and more.
In addition to the liturgy we are invited to spend some time each day reading and pondering the Scriptures at home. One’s spiri-
tual life is strengthened by delving into the Bible daily. Using Bible passages to introduce personal prayer is an ancient practice
from which piety flourishes. Reading a short portion of the Bible each night before or following supper helps keep the family
focused and firm in faith and love.
Wonderful benefits are to be found when the Sacred Scriptures are studied and prayed in community. Bible studies are opportu-
nities where a group of people are able to share how the Scriptures have impacted their lives. Such gatherings provide just the
right direction one should follow as is revealed in the word spoken by God.
The parishioners of both Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Saint Cecilia Church come together for the various opportunities we
have here in Rockaway to share in the study of the Scriptures. Although we do not meet during these summer days, we have a
Bible Study group which meets on Monday evenings, another which meets on Tuesday mornings and a Mommy’s group which
meets on Thursday mornings. The gatherings take place at Saint Cecilia’s and will resume following Labor Day. I hope that you
will take advantage of these opportunities to join us in receiving God’s word and allowing it to grow within.
REMEMBER: There is no vacation from the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist!
