Friday on July 7th at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

We begin in the evening at 6:30 with Exposition of

the Most Blessed Sacrament followed by the singing

of the Litany of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and

the celebration of the Holy Mass. At the conclusion of

the Mass the veneration of the relic of Saint Margate

Mary Alocque will take place. She was the visionary

Heart of Jesus. A priest is available for the sacrament

of penance during the time of exposition. Please join

many blessings for those who observe this day each

month. The Noon Mass at Sacred Heart church is not

celebrated on First Fridays due to the evening Mass.

SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the

ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-

barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a

statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the

words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave

of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he

who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John

11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is

the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church

states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-

parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left

side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One

may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place

and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price

for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

For further information you may speak to me or the cemetery

administrator, Mrs. Diane Boykow, by calling the parish of-

fice. – FATHER ZIG

cilia Cemetery Beautification Committee will take place

on Friday, July 21 at 10 a.m. in the parish cemetery. In

the event of inclement weather the meeting will take

place in the parish office.

ORDINATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD – His Ex-

cellency, Bishop Arthur Serratelli ordained 13 new

priests for service in the Diocese of Paterson this past

Saturday, July 1st. The ceremony took place in the

newly rededicated Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in

Paterson. We thank God for this wonderful gift to the

Church and look forward to receiving one of these new

priests in Rockaway on August 1st.

580-St. Cecilia

St. Maria Goretti, called by Pope Pius XII “The St. Agnes of the 20th century,” was born on a small farm near Ancona, Italy, in 1890. The third of seven children, she was, in the words of her mother, “happy, good, openhearted, without whim, but with a sense of seriousness beyond her years, and never disobedient.” Her father died when she was nine, and Maria helped out with the younger children and the housework while her mother ran the farm. She received First communion at eleven and stove with all her strength to do better each day.

Six months later, this heroic maiden was severely tried for her Faith. The Goretti family shared a home with the partner of their father and his son, Alexander, a wicked-minded youth who began making sinful advances toward Maria. She repelled them immediately but said nothing about them for he threatened to kill her and her mother if she did. Finally, lust drove the tragic Alexander to attack outright, but again, the Saint resisted him with all her strength, crying out repeatedly: “No, it’s a sin! God does not want it!? Thereupon the attacker overwhelmed by fair and anger, began to strike at her blindly with a long dagger, and several blows passed clear through her body.

St. Maria was rushed to the hospital at Nettuno and surgeons worked feverishly to save her life, but it soon became evident that nothing could be done. The next morning she was given Communion but first queried about her attitude toward Alexander. She replied clearly that she forgave him, that she would pray for his repentance, and that she wished to see him in heaven. On July6, 19902, this saintly maiden died and went to meet her heavenly Spouse for Whose love she had been willing to give her life.

On July 25, 1950, she was raised to sainthood by Pope Pius XII, with her mother, bothers and sisters present, a unique event in the history of the Church. By that time her prayers for her murderer had long since been heard and answered. After eight years of unrepentant imprisonment, Alexander had a complete change of heart; released for good behavior after twenty-seven years, he hastened to beg forgiveness of the Saint’s mother and then became a Capuchin laybrother, who gave evidence at the canonical inquiry about blessed Maria and lived to see her canonized.

PRAYER: God, author of innocence and Lover of chastity. You conferred on St. maria Your handmaid the grace of martyrdom at a youthful age. Through her intercession grant us constancy in Your commandments. You Who gave the crown to a virgin who fought for You. Amen

ST. MARIA GORETTI, Virgin and Martyr

July 6—Patroncess of Youth

My Dear Parishioners,

Today we mark the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we come together to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Scripture texts which

are given to us this Sunday speak about the welcome which is given to those who are unknown. The Prophet Elisha is offered

welcome and hospitality by the woman of Shunem in the Old Testament reading. Because of her kindness the Lord blesses her

and her husband with the promise of a child to the thus far fertile couple. In the Gospel the Lord Jesus tells His listeners that they

will be rewarded for the kindness and hospitality they offer the one who comes in His name. Welcome and hospitality were and

are cherished characteristics for the people of the Middle East. I would say that this probably holds true for most cultures.

Today we welcome our new priest FATHER PAWEL BALA to Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and Saint Cecilia Parish. Father

Pawel comes to us from Saint Virgil Parish in Morris Plains where he had previously served as parochial vicar. I have known

Father Pawel for 6 years because he is the good friend of Father Marcin and was ordained with him in 2011 by Bishop Serratelli.

Father was born in Poland where he entered the seminary and later completed his theological education at Saint Cyril and Metho-

dius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Father Pawel is a wonderful gentleman and I know that you will welcome him with

great joy.

We will be receiving a second priest on the 1st of August, is what I have been told. This priest, who I have not yet been informed

of, will be ordained a priest on Saturday in the newly rededicated Saint John the Baptist Cathedral in Paterson by Bishop Ser-

ratelli. So our second priest will be “really new!” I know that, like Father Pawel, you will welcome him and bring him into your

hearts.

You, the people of Rockaway, have always been welcoming to our priests and seminarians. You open your hearts and your

homes to our clergy making them part of your family. Many of our clergy come as missionaries to us from other countries and

you make them feel at home! Your hospitality and kindness characterize our two parishes. It is because of your goodness that our

Bishop sends us these young men knowing that we will assist them and care for them as we reflect upon the words of Our Lord,

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” As a result of our welcome and

hospitality God has truly blessed our parishes.

As I close please remember to pray for the cause of religious liberty in our country and for people throughout the world. May

your 4th of July celebration be peaceful!

God bless you and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Father Zig
