WALKING PILGRIMAGE – The 32nd annual spiritual 4

day walking pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czesto-

chowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania will take place August 8

-11 and will begin at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Great

Meadows, New Jersey. Walkers range from infants to people

well into their 70’s. You may join our spiritual trip any day

of the journey and for as many days as you wish. Register on

line at the website: www.walkingpilgrimage.us or call for

information, 908.637.4269.

BISHOP BARRON BOOK – 50 copies of the recent book

by Bishop Robert Barron entitled, “Letter to a Suffering

Church,” have been placed in the church vestibule for your

information. Bishop Barron, highly regarded in his evangeli-

zation ministry and Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of

Los Angeles, wrote this book for all Catholics suffering from

the fallout of the clergy abuse scandal. The book is informa-

tive, consoling and encouraging. Please take a copy and

when you are finished reading it please return it to the vesti-

bule for someone else to read.

CEMETERY BENCHES – I am happy to report that the

appeal for donors to memorialize two benches which have

been ordered for the parish cemetery columbarium has been

met. Giving me much hope is that I have had a least 5 others

come forward seeking to make the donation for a bench

which costs $1,600. Further information regarding the instil-

lation of the granite benches at the columbarium and their

dedication will be forth coming in the bulletin. Please know

that other memorials will be announced in the bulletin and

your generosity is a sign of both your love and faith! – Father

Zig

CHURCH ROOF UPDATE – I have been in contact with

the Arthur Vincent Company and our diocesan architect who

recommended that at this time a cross not be placed on top of

the cupola due to the winds which may cause movement of

the cupola and perhaps another leak in a rain storm. It was

suggested that the cross project we reconsidered at the time

when a new roof will be required for the church so that at the

time the cupola will be more firmly mounted to the roof

through reinforcements. As a result of this information the

project of the mounting of a cross on the cupola will be post-

poned until that time. I am told that the scaffolding will be

coming down from the roof shortly and that work of repoint-

ing and repairing the chimney on the church roof will begin.

I would like to thank all those who have made donations to

this project. Your generosity is an inspiration to me! – Father

Zig

BEREAVEMENT SESSIONS TO BEGIN—The passing of

a loved one is the greatest hurt which we endure in life. If you

recently lost a loved one to death we invite you to participate

in our bereavement program here at Saint Cecilia’s, open to

both parishioners and non parishioners. The six week program

begins on September 25 and will meet for the next five

Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 pm in the parish office. Registra-

tion is required by calling the parish office at 973.627.0313

prior to September 20th.

BAPTISM CLASS – A meeting of all those wishing infor-

mation and scheduling for a baptism will meet on Monday

evening, August 19th in the Saint Cecilia Parish office at 7

pm. Father will be present to conduct the information session

and answer questions regarding the celebration of the sacra-

ment.

ATTENTION MEN – A men’s group called FATHERS

OF ST. JOSEPH will be meeting every other Saturday

morning at 5:30 a.m. in the St. Cecilia Office Building.

The Fathers of St. Joseph gatherings are not so much

meetings as they are mini retreats, whose aim is to com-

municate the spirituality of fatherhood in a manner that

encourages and inspires fathers to embrace, engage and –

by the power of the Holy Spirit – sanctify their vocation.

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

About the New Jersey Safe Haven Law:

Why are states offering Safe Haven Laws? The purpose of Safe Haven is to

protect unwanted babies from being hurt or killed because they were aban-doned. You may have heard tragic stories of babies left in dumpsters or public

toilets. The parents who committed these acts may have been under severe emotional distress. The mothers may have hidden their pregnancies, fearful of

what would happen if their families found out. Because they were afraid and

had nowhere to turn for help, they abandoned their babies. Abandoning a baby puts the child in extreme danger. Too often, it results in

the child's death. It is also illegal, with severe consequences. But with Safe

Haven, this tragedy doesn't ever have to happen again. In New Jersey, no one ever has to abandon a child again.

Ann. Statutes 30:4C-15.7,8

You can leave your baby, up to 30 days old, at an emergency room of any licensed hospital or at any state, county or municipal police station in New

Jersey. For more information see:

CAN YOU HELP A CHILD? - Divine Mercy Academy is

our local Catholic school located on the campus of Saint Ce-

cilia Parish. Providing a needy child with a Catholic educa-

tion is a wonderful work of mercy and compassion. YOU

may be able to help such a child by providing tuition assis-

tance OR making a contribution to our Divine Mercy Scholar-

ship Fund. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated.

Your generosity promotes the faith values of the Church

which are school children are immersed in every school day.

Please contact our principal, Mrs. Ann Mitchell at

973.627.6003. May God richly bless you for supporting our

young people and Catholic education!

MISSION APPEAL: During the weekend of August 10-11,

Rev. Huy Dinh, CSSp, will visit our parish to speak at the

Masses about the missionary work of the Church and in par-

ticular that of the Spiritans (Congregation of the Holy Spirit,

previously known as the Holy Ghost Fathers). To learn more

about the Spiritans, please visit their website at: http://

spiritans.org

This visit is part of a national program in which annually a

representative of one of the missionary groups visits parishes

of the Diocese to invite the parish to share in the mission

work of the universal Church. The Spiritans are an interna-

tional community engaged in a wide range of missionary

activity in over 60 countries throughout the world. Fr. Huy

himself is a missionary priest, originally from Vietnam,

where now the Spiritans are rapidly building a foundation for

the worldwide Church.

When Jesus said: “You shall witness to me in Jerusalem and

in Samaria and to the ends of the earth”, He made the spread

of the Gospel an essential part of our Catholic life. We urge

you to respond generously to Father Huy’s appeal.

UNIVERSALLY Know as the “Curé of Ars,” St. John Mary Vianney was ordained a priest in 1815. Three years later he was made parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet, where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls made him known throughout the Christian world. His life was one of extreme mortification. Accustomed to the most severe austerities, beleaguered by swarms of penitents, and besieged by the devil, this great mystic manifested imperturbable patience. He was a wonder worker loved by the crowds, but he remains to this day the living image of the priest after the Heart of Christ. He heard confessions of people from all over the world for sixteen hours each day. His life was filled with the works of charity and love. It is reported that the staunchest of sinners were converted at his mere word. He died on August 4, 1859, and was can-onized on May 31, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. PRAYER Almighty and merciful God, in St. John Vianney You have given us a Priest who was outstanding in pastoral zeal. Through his intercession help us to win men for Christ and together with them attain eternal glory. Amen.

ST. JOHN VIANNEY, Priest August 4—Patron of Priests

My dear parishioners,

Today as we celebrate the Lord’s Day we come to the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scriptural texts speak to us about

prayer, our conversation with the Lord who shows mercy and compassion to those whom He has redeemed through the power

of the Cross. The readings testify to the intimacy which the Lord has for us, His people. Jesus instructs us to call God, “Our

Father” and Abraham haggles with the Almighty as two friends would do. The Alleluia Verse for today’s liturgy states: “You

have received a Spirit of adoption, through which we cry, Abba, Father.” This verse taken from the Apostle Paul’s Letter to

the Romans reminds us that as children of God, our Father, we can address the Divine Being in such affectionate terms. We

can do so because He loves us!

The Father’s love for us was manifested in such a magnificent manner by sending us His Only Begotten Son, our Lord, God

and Savior Jesus Christ who suffered greatly for our sins on the Cross. Through the power of His Holy Resurrection He calls

us, through Baptism, into union within the family of the Most Holy Trinity.

Prayer is the powerful means by which we communicate with God. Our prayers also unite us with the Communion of Saints,

the blessed ones who stand before the throne of Christ our God. They are able to intercede for us and help us throughout our

lives. They too are part of our family and can work miracles on our behalf in the name of the Lord. Intercessory prayer is our

tradition and it comes to us from the Apostles. We pray for ourselves and we know that others pray on our behalf as well.

What a great comfort to know that we are surrounded by others who approach God on our behalf.

This would be a good time to invite you to consider joining the Saint Padre Pio Prayer Group when it reconvenes on Wednes-

day, September 18th. The group meets every third Wednesday of the month at 7 o’clock in the evening with Holy Mass fol-

lowed by the prayer meeting. The group usually meets in the parish office but on occasion will meet in the church. In Septem-

ber we will review the book, Padre Pio: Glimpse Into the Miraculous. Also during this time we appeal to Saint Pio, a pow-

erful intercessor, to hear the petitions we present for ourselves and those who have asked us to pray for them. I hope that you

might consider joining us for this prayer time. ALSO, I invite you to consider joining the LIGHT OF CHRIST PRAYER

GROUP which meets in Hayes Hall every Tuesday evening at 7:45 for charismatic prayer and Scripture reading and sharing.

What wonderful opportunities we have here at Saint Cecilia for communal prayer. Why not check them out?

See you in church!
