SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the

ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-

barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a

statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the

words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave

of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he

who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John

11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is

the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church

states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-

parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left

side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One

may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place

and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price

for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

For further information you may speak to me or the cemetery

administrator, Mrs. Diane Boykow, by calling the parish of-

fice. – FATHER ZIG

BAPTISM CLASS – A class for parents who are preparing

for their child’s baptism will take place in the Saint Cecilia

In 257, when St. Sixtus became Pope, he ordained St. Lawrence deacon, and though he was still young appointed him the first of the seven deacons who served in the Church of Rome. To this office was annexed the care of the treasury of the Church and the distribution of its revenues among the poor. In that same year, the Emperor Valerian published his edict of persecu-tion and commanded all Bishops, priests, and deacons to be put to death immediately. St. Sixtus was arrested twelve months later. As the holy man was led to execution, St. Lawrence followed him in tears. Sixtus at the same time ordered him to dis-tribute the treasures of the Church among the poor. St. Lawrence did as he was commanded, selling even the sacred vessels to increase the sum.

At that time the Church of Rome, besides providing for its ministers, maintained fifteen hundred poor people and even sent alms to distant countries. The Prefect of Rome commanded St. Lawrence to surrender the treasures of the Church, and he promised to show them to him. On the third day, instead of gold and silver he exhibited the poor whom he had gathered to-gether.

The enraged Prefect commanded that he should be slowly roasted on a gridiron. The order was mercilessly executed but the martyr, strengthened by Divine grace, endured his suffering with heroic fortitude and even found strength to jest at the ex-pense of his torments and his persecutor. To his last breath the holy deacon prayed for the conversion of the city of Rome, that the Faith of Christ might thence spread throughout the world. Several senators, who had witnessed his execution, were converted to Christianity and gave decent burial to his body. His martyrdom occurred in the year 258.

PRAYER God, by his ardent love for You St. Lawrence exhibited faithful service and attained a glorious martyrdom. Help us to love what he loved and to practice what he taught. Amen.

ST. LAWRENCE, Martyr

August 10—Patron of the Poor and of Cooks

My Dear Parishioners,

We depart from the Sundays in Ordinary Time today to celebrate the Feast of Our Lord’s Holy Transfiguration.

This annual observance is commemorated on August 6th, 40 days before the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy

Cross on September 14th. The Transfiguration of the Lord Jesus occurred on Mount Tabor as Jesus was headed to

Jerusalem where He would undergo His Passion, Death and Holy Resurrection. The Apostles Peter, James and

John accompanied the Lord to the mountaintop and experienced the wonder of the Lord in glory who was speak-

ing with the prophets Moses and Elijah about His own Passover from death to life. The Transfiguration of the

Lord is one of the ancient feasts which is observed on the same date by both the Church of the East and the

Church of the West, both Catholic and Orthodox.

The miracle of the Transfiguration was an “oasis” for the journey. It was that time of glory which the Apostles

were to recall later as they accompanied Jesus in His final days. The Transfiguration was a source of hope and the

sign of eternal life. The Transfiguration is the fruit which has blossomed from the seed which was buried in the

ground and had died. It is a tradition in some places that fruits and vegetables are blessed on this feast for that

very reason. Eternal life is the harvest which the Lord gathers for His faithful ones.

I welcome our new priest, Father Cerilo Javinez, who has been assigned to serve our two parishes, Sacred Heart

of Jesus and Saint Cecilia. I am happy that we are back to three priests serving our two parishes. I know that Fa-

ther Cerilo’s ministry and that of Father Pawel’s will be a great source of blessings for us in Rockaway. Please

remember the three of us in your daily prayers that God will strengthen us in our labors for the good of His Holy

Church.

Next weekend we will have a guest priest with us to tell us about the missionary work which is being done to

spread the Gospel. Our prayers and our financial support for this work are crucial. I know that your past generos-

ity will once again be present next Sunday.

May the Lord, whose Transfiguration we celebrate this day, bless you and your loved ones!
