580-St. Cecilia

On January 6, 1412, Joan of Arc was born to pious parents of the French peasant class, at the obscure village of Domremy, near the

province of Lorraine. At a very early age she heard voices: those of St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret.

At first the message were personal and general. Then at last came the crowning order. In May 1428, her voices told Joan to go to the King of France and help him reconquer his kingdom. For at that time the English King was after the throne of France, and the Duke of Bur-gundy (the chief rival of the French King) was siding with him and gobbling up ever more French territory.

After overcoming opposition from churchmen and courtiers, the seventeen-year-old girl was given a small army with which she raised the siege of Orleans on May 8, 1429. She then enjoyed a series of spectacular military successes, during which the King was able to enter Rheims and be crowned with her at his side.

In May 1430, as she was attempting to relive Compiegne, she was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English when Charles and the French did nothing to save her. After months of imprisonment, she was tried at Rouen by a tribunal presided over by the infamous Peter Cauchon, Bishop of Beauvais, who hoped that the English would help him to become Archbishop.

Through her unfamiliarity with the technicalities of theology, Joan was trapped into making a few damaging statements. When she re-fused to retract the assertion that it was the Saint of God who had commanded her to do what she had done, she was condemned to death as a heretic, sorceress, and adulteress, and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. She was nineteen years old. Some thirty years later she was exonerated of all guilt and she was ultimately canonized in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV, making official was the people had known for centuries.

PRAYER: Lord, You wondrously raised up a St. Joan, Your Virgin, to defend the Faith and her country. Through her intercessions grant that the Church may overcome the snares of her enemies and enjoy unbroken peace. Amen

JOAN OF ARC, Virgin MAY 30, Patroness of France

My dear parishioners,

As we return to Ordinary Time today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This is the feast which is com-

memorated each year following Pentecost Sunday and the close of the Easter season. Today we are invited to contemplate the

mystery of God, the Lord who has been revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the Gospel passage from the Evangelist

Matthew we hear the Lord Jesus say to the Apostles prior to His ascension that they are to go out to the entire world and

preach the Gospel and baptize in the Name of the Trinity.

God is a community of persons whose unity is preserved through love. In the Epistles of Saint John we are reminded that God

is love and that God is inviting us into His life of love by communion with Him. Our desire for this intimacy is expressed in

our sacramental life and in the deepening of our spirituality. Our times of prayer connect us with the Lord and are the path-

ways which lead us into the divine life. Today’s feast is our reminder that union with God is possible right now but that is up

to us.

In today’s Gospel the Lord Jesus commissions the Apostles for ministry. He authorizes them to act in His Name. This Sunday

our hearts are filled with jubilation as we celebrate the ordination to the holy priesthood of Father Joseph Boykow and Father

Mateusz Darlak. Now as priests they too have been commissioned, as were the Apostles, to invite others into communion with

God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We pray for our two young priests and the 7 others who were also ordained this weekend

with them, that the Lord God may strengthen them and bless them in their priestly ministry. We are grateful that they re-

sponded generously to the Lord’s call to service in the Church. We thank their parents and family for supporting them in their

vocation so that they may minister in the Name of Christ our Savior. George & Diane Boykow are our own esteemed Rock-

away Family who are active in the life of the Church. However we extend a special welcome to Father Matt’s parents,

Wieslaw and Bozena Darlak, who traveled from Poland to be present for their son’s ordination. This is their first time in the

United States and to them I say, WITAMY (Welcome). I hope that you will have the opportunity to greet them this weekend

or next before their return home on June 3rd.

I pray that the weather will be clear for Monday’s Memorial Day Mass at the cemetery. I direct your attention to the article in

the bulletin regarding Thursday night’s ROSARY RALLY celebrating the Feast of the Visitation of Mary and the last day of

May.

Let us remember our veterans who gave their lives in service to our country as we gather to pay them tribute on Memorial

Day!!

God bless you!

Father Zig
